BBC Electric Proms at the Roundhouse

World premiere of Arena: Peter Doherty

Not too hard to get into today. Thanks to guy who let me have his spare ticket and the great Roundhouse staff (let me in free again .

 

Smallish presentation theatre. Thought it was only going to be half-full but then just before the film started we were joined by a load of journos and VIP’s including Adam, Drew, Purple and quite a few who I later recognised from the film. No P.D. though.

 

Overall the film was well balanced and I think it will be well received by fans and critics. It definitely didn’t seek to be sensational but was honest enough to show both the good and the bad sides of Pete, on and off the stage. I’m sure the tabloids will linger on the worst bits but these are the scenes I remember most.

 

- Pete looking fit, swimming in an ‘infinity pool’ on the roof of the Grand Hotel Central in Barcelona. Such fantastic views. I swam in that pool in June !

- Painting with his own blood in the last days of ‘that’ flat.

- The most delightful scene in the film was of Pete playing with Estile at Lisa’s. So sweet and heart-warming.

- Good performance during recording of Janie Jones (more nostalgia for me – as I first saw the Clash play this song at this venue, the Roundhouse, exactly 30 years ago (5th Sept ’76)

- Nice bits of the Boogaloo gig with Shane and Kate.

- Bad performances at the legendary three hour ‘car-crash’ gig at Rhythm Factory and 'sleeping' on stage in Scotland(?).

- ‘Not all there’ Pete rambling on about his Dad the soldier.

- Chaotic out-takes (I hope) from Blinding recording session.

- A journalist explaining that all of the Press (and most of their readers) were just waiting for Pete to die.

- Pete spitting at and then attacking the camera. Funnily enough, they showed the absurd prelude to the horrendous ‘blood spraying at camera’ interview in Spain(?) without showing that ‘attack’ and Drew walking out in disgust.

- Killamangiro and Albion from Get Loaded.

- Ending with the wonderfully ironic High and Dry by Radiohead.

 

‘Pete Doherty’ will be broadcast on BBC TWO in November 2006.

 

After the film, I stumbled across the ‘Shambles crew in the Lock Tavern having a quiet pint. Great to see them without all the usual razzamatazz. Would have been rude to intrude – so sorry, no photos.
