Gwyneth...

Featured Replies

I am sure that she did. She might have arrived at Heathrow on the 4th or 5th in time to celebrate with her husband - I noticed that Coldplay did not have a gig on 5 December (their 8th anniversary).

I think you're right, Nancy! I've a feeling the date on that LA article is incorrect.

I think it's unreasonable to expect the band to keep making the same old music over and over again. As their kids have grown, so have the band evolved as well.

In recent pictures, she actually looks more like her mom. And no, at 7 yrs old, she no longer sucks her thumb. :)

I agree, she is looking more like mommy.

But who knows about the thumb sucking! My friend is 33 and she admitted to sucking her thumb at night. Some habits are impossible to break!

Hi there! True. At least she doesn't any more in the few pictures we've seen of her at 7.

I have to concur on the thumb sucking. I was, like, 18 when I finally stopped. It's comforting, lol.

Why facepalm? I sucked my thumb until 11 and it did me no harm. You can take a pacifier away from a kid, you can't take their thumb away. And more often than not the more you tell a kid to stop it, the more they want to do it. Just let them get on with it and they'll grow out of it eventually. It's not a big deal and doesn't deserve judgement.

I don't think I ever sucked my thumb at all. I did do something else (that I'll never divulge) until I was 13 though.

But seriously? 18? Didn't it get deformed or something?

I know some moms even put chili peppers on kids' thumbs so that they would stop sucking it. :stunned: :D

I don't remember doing that...

I wonder, is sucking thumb a girl thing? B/c looking back, neither of my boys did it.

The mom I'm talking about started doing that to her son when he was 11-12. So I don't think it's gender-related...

And I don't know if that sounds cruel or something, but he kind of needed to stop. :stunned: :D

It sounds a bit cruel but I wouldn't rush to judgment. What's acceptable in 1 culture might not be ok in an other. I think a mom was brought to court here in the US for spraying hot sauce in their child's mouth as a punishment.

Nope. Not at all. And I didn't need braces either. There was nothing better than being curled up with my favorite blanket and sucking my thumb.

Gwyneth Paltrow: My life is so surreal - cooking helps to completely relax

Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow, 39, discusses cooking, parenting with Coldplay's Chris Martin and winning another Oscar.

What do you enjoy about cooking?

Cooking makes me feel so calm and happy, just doing things that are routine and mundane. If I am really stressed out, I start to cook and I completely relax. My life can be so surreal sometimes but when I’m at home with my kids in the kitchen, I throw a dishcloth over my shoulder and as soon I do that I immediately feel grounded.

Is that a tradition?

Funnily enough, Brad Pitt’s mum taught me that [Pitt and Paltrow were engaged in the 1990s]. It was the best tip anyone’s ever given me because it’s always there while you’re cooking, so I get chopping and put the pans on the stove.

How do you stay so slim if you enjoy eating a lot?

I exercise a lot. You can’t be 39 years old, with two kids and eat what you like and be in good shape if you don’t work out.

Any great tips for all of us who don’t have much time to cook?

I think the main thing is not to stress yourself out. That’s rule number one. I honestly think that even ordering a pizza and sitting around together as a family is great. You’re not always going to have time to cook a meal from scratch. What I try to do on weekends is make batches of stuff for the week: vegetarian chili, spaghetti with meatballs. You can make a really delicious pasta or grill a chicken breast in ten minutes.

Do you eat together every night?

We don’t have family dinners every night. In London, sometimes I’ll go out with friends, or with Chris, but we always eat together on Sunday night. When we’re at our beach house [in Amagansett, Long Island, New York], we always eat together. We have an amazing garden there, so my kids will help me pick vegetables. It’s by the sea and there are all kinds of fresh fish.

Does Chris [Martin, husband and lead singer in Coldplay] cook?

No, I am the cook. My son can crack an egg perfectly. My daughter Apple is very into baking, which is good, because I am a terrible baker.

How central was cooking to your life when you were a kid?

It was very important. We had a square kitchen table where we used to eat. I have so many memories of my dad with his crossword puzzles. He would have his coffee every morning with lots of milk and sugar and he would let me sneak sips of it. It was my favourite thing.

Which of your dad’s recipes are special to you?

His barbecued salmon with ginger and thyme and his ‘world-famous’ pancakes. It is hard for me to eat them because I keep expecting him to walk into the kitchen when I do. I make them very rarely and I cry every time. They are the essence of him in a food. Dad loved to barbecue: he would fire up his grill and make ribs and hot dogs. It wasn’t very healthy. There is a strong connection for me between food and emotion because the high point for him was being together as a family and having delicious food.

You were quite young when you won an Oscar (in 1999) for Shakespeare In Love. Are you still driven?

You grow up wondering: ‘What if I win an Academy Award one day?’ You get one, you are 26 and you think: ‘OK, now what do I do?’ I had worked really hard and by the time I had kids, I was ready to leave off acting for a while. It gave me a lot of freedom to accomplish that early on.

How much of a priority is keeping the family together?

I am very traditional in a 1950s housewife way: cooking, making sure everyone’s fed and everything’s in order. I think that a wife has a responsibility to make a home and to protect the family. I also believe that a wife should be able to do whatever she wants and work if she wants. My mother was a less traditional wife than me. She worked to support the family.

We’re meeting in Los Angeles and the children are with their dad in London. Do you miss them a lot?

Well, I don’t feel guilty unless I am tipping the balance badly. For example, before Christmas last year, I went away five times. Just little trips but it was too much for my son. He was very upset and I felt horrifically guilty. If I am not with him it really takes a toll on me. He’s little and he needs to be with me.

Are you or Chris the strict one with the children?

We co-parent. We do it together. I don’t know what the word ‘strict’ means. I expect them to have good manners and to behave nicely. The other day, we were out having dinner and the waiter came over and gave my daughter some juice and she didn’t say anything. I said: ‘Apple? Baby, what’s happened, where are your manners?’ and she said: ‘I left them in my suitcase.’
