RIDING the crest of a wave, Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow tackles her latest challenging role...as a surf-boarder.

 

With her blonde hair pulled back in a bun, the Oscar-winning actress is pictured taking lessons in Cornwall. Mum-of-two Gwyneth, 33 - married to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin - showed off her curves in a black wetsuit as she tried out a beginner board. And it looked like her regular yoga exercises helped her balance. The Shakespeare In Love star even managed to stay upright... briefly.

 

One onlooker said: "She had such a big smile. She was obviously enjoying herself and seemed dead chuffed when she stood up on the board."

 

But Gwyneth seems to have left her new-found passion for surfing a bit late - especially for a girl who was born in California.

She wasn't even born when her fellow countrymen The Beach Boys released California Girls.

 

But it seems the spirit of the band's most famous track is alive and well on Gwyneth Paltrow's current beach holiday.

 

The 33-year-old actress swopped the breakers of her birth place California for some rather more tame water near the home of her husband Chris Martin's parents in Cornwall. Not only were the waves smaller, but the sky was surely a little greyer and the air a spot colder than back home.

 

Though she looked a little shaky to start, it soon became apparent that catching waves really is in her blood. In fact, by the end of her first hour-long lesson, the Oscar-winner managed to graduate from lying flat on her chunky yellow beginners' board to standing upright, at least for a few seconds anyway.

 

Dressed head to toe in a black wetsuit, and with her blonde hair tied back out of the way in a ball, Gwyneth went about her business almost unnoticed on the Cornish beach, save for one fellow surfer who managed to capture these images on a compact camera.

 

Fantastic shape

 

She looked in fantastic shape despite giving birth to the couple's second child Moses just four months ago. The only evidence of the birth was her small tummy which became evident when the black wetsuit silhouetted against the white surf behind her.

 

Gwyneth is one of an increasing band of celebrities choosing to holiday in the south-west peninsula. Hugh Grant and Jemima Khan were last month pictured on a Cornish beach together, while Princes William and Harry are also regulars.

 

Kate Winslet and her Oscar-winning film director husband Sam Mendes have a holiday home in Cornwall, as do television presenters Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan. Gwyneth's husband Martin, 29, who is lead singer of the band Coldplay, is already an accomplished surfer - but has not found all his waveriding experiences so fulfilling.

 

In July 2003 Martin, who guards his private life jealously, damaged a photographer's car windscreen after having his picture taken while surfing near Byron Bay on Australia's east coast while the band were on tour.

Hollywood superstar Gwyneth Paltrow reportedly became so addicted to British reality TV show Big Brother, she had every episode taped.

 

The 'Emma' star, who is married to Coldplay rocker Chris Martin, loves to unwind in front of the television after a full day of running around after young children Apple and Moses.

 

A friend told the Daily Express: "Gwyneth is not normally one for reality TV but she started watching Big Brother to unwind from her day with her small kids. She watched whenever she could and really got into it. The final couple of weeks she watched almost every night and had what she couldn't see taped. She says she's really going to miss it but Chris is very happy - he hates reality TV with a vengeance."
