Hey, everyone. I was just thinking about a dichotomy between the music of Coldplay and Radiohead & Thom Yorke. If I'm feeling hopeless and alienated (you know, "We all die alone anyway and that's just the way it is," etc., etc.) I gravitate more to Thom; if I'm feeling more hopeful about life and my problems, I gravitate more to Chris for help. Sometimes I want to listen to Fix You; sometimes I'd rather just say "fuck it" and listen to Black Swan for reassurance. Does anybody else feel this way about Chris, Coldplay and other, less hopeful music? I guess you can tell that I'd rather be on Chris's side. But confrontation is tough.

well actually i just love to listen to chris not matter what mood im in, cos just hearing coldplay and his voice make's me happier and lighter in life

Though Thom would probably throw a fit, if you told him that Radiohead are better for "all is lost" moods and Coldplay for "all is not lost" moods. He said in an interview once that he did not write 'The Bends' for "people to slash their f****** wrist to. :laugh3:

It depends... sometimes I fell more like Radiohead-mood, sometimes Coldplay-mood. If I feel kinda romantic and sad, I listen to Coldplay, but if I'm disappointed or angry, I listen to Radiohead. Both Chris and Thom have beautiful voices, imo.

Yeah Thom has a good voice too. But the Radiohead music is vague for me. Don't know :)

it's your opinion of course, but saying Radiohead's lyrics are about "We all die alone anyway and that's just the way it is" is ridiculous. it's not easy to interpret Yorke's lyrics, but what you are saying seems like a childish misconception to me. name me one song when Thom points at "we're all gonna die alone" stuff

i would suggest to read some books first to understand Radiohead's lyrics deeper, of course only if you want.

mainly, Thom's lyrics are influenced by literature from George Orwell, Douglas Adams, Thomas Pynchon or let's say George Monbiot who Thom is a big fan of, by the way

also... Coldplay wrote not only hopeful music, they are/were describe(d) as depressive and heavily Radiohead influenced quite often.

so i don't really get why you've described them as they were opposites to each other

I really don't think Radiohead's music and lyrics are "hopeless". There's always a hope, maybe a tiny one, but it is. And there're many songs about love, about different sides of this feeling. I don't understand what does it have to do with lonely death anyway.

Sometimes, I actually consider some Radiohead songs to be addressing these themes quite directly. Not necessarily 'we all die alone' but themes of death etc. Street Spirit, Idioteque and No Suprises are some examples. But this does not phase me at all, they are some of my favourite songs ever. EDIT: And jamus, you could always go listen to 'Pop is Dead.':wink3:

No Surprises is a bit angry song. Thom is just fed up with the modern world, with politics and also probably with some personal problems. the whole meaning of OKC is the effect of the corrupted world economy on people

Street Spirit is about death, that's true, but definitely not about "dying alone". in my opinion, he points at that the humanity isn't immortal and this is the rotation of life, someday we die. but there's a line "immerse your soul in love" which is clearly shows you some hope

All I can say is that I definitely prefer Thom Yorke over Chris martin at the moment....

obviously Thom must have better lyrics....because me as a non-native english speaker has more problems to understand Thom's lyrics than to understand Chris' lyrics...

I must admit before I got into Radiohead properly, I used to think they were very depressing, and that Thom was just a moody git who didn't like much. That's what I was told, and I just believed it. But having got more and more into the music I started to realise how wrong I was.

 

Musically, I don't think you can compare the two. Chris' lyrics are mainly nice and breezy; not really requiring that much concentration. Thom's lyrics, however, are much more substantial; they deal with politics and the environment and general fears of technology and the future. Their music makes me think, and I generally like that.

 

As people, Chris seems to be very "celeb: married to a Hollywood actress, always doing interviews and basically very gregarious. Thom, on the other hand, is much more normal. He doesn't like interviews and has been called "awkward". They are both of course, nice people, but somehow I would rather hang out with Thom just because he seems my type of guy.

plus..i don't like the comparisons by people whpodon't even listen to RH and go for that general (mis)conceptions of RH and Thom, thinking theyre enough for this debate.:thinking:

i feel almost a...responsibility to like radiohead, but after trying...i kinda sorta dont. i just dont connect with it at all, and its not really my type of music. i respect them 100% as musicians and think theyre innovative and awesome and legendary, but i just cant get in the groove. i really dont understand how people compare them and coldplay at all, really.

though i love love LOVE the song "airbag".

More people should be able to accept that statement than probably will.

exactly how i feel, i dont seem to find ANYTHING special in Thom's voice.. it even annoys me sometimes, but i cant deny that they have amazing songs such as Let down,Fake plastic trees,Exit music or Street Spirit. but the ones that i really love are so so few... but Still, if i HAD to choose between Thom and Chris, idd say Chris.. I love his voice and i love his music.
