Hamilton's kart sells for £42,100

The proceeds of the sale will go to charity

A kart belonging to two-time Grand Prix winner Lewis Hamilton has sold for £42,100. The 22-year-old Formula One driver, of Tewin, near Stevenage, Hertfordshire, sold his kart on eBay, along with the chance to meet him on 21 June.

All proceeds from the sale of the kart, which has a top speed of more than 80mph (130km/h), will go to Tommy's, the baby charity.

McLaren driver Hamilton began karting at the age of eight.

He progressed through the ranks to Formula Super A, becoming European Champion in 2000.

In 1998, he became the youngest ever driver to secure a Formula One deal when he was signed to McLaren's development programme.

Hamilton has enjoyed a record-breaking start to his Formula One career, becoming the first competitor to finish on the podium in his first three races.

He now divides his time between the family home in Stevenage, and a flat he bought in Woking, Surrey, near McLaren's headquarters there.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen shattered Lewis Hamilton's dreams of a debut British Grand Prix victory with a copybook second victory in a row.

The Finn, who won at Magny-Cours last weekend, drove a superb race to beat Hamilton's McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso, with Hamilton a distant third.

Hamilton was unable to convert his pole position into a win, losing the lead at the first round of pit stops.

But the Briton still holds a 12-point lead over Alonso in the standings.

Hamilton suffers qualifying crash

Lewis Hamilton was stretchered away from the Nurburgring after a crash during European Grand Prix qualifying.

The 22-year-old Briton went into the tyre wall at the 'Schumacher S' bend and struggled to get out of his McLaren before medical assistance arrived.

Hamilton was taken away on a stretcher some time later, although was well enough to give a thumbs up signal.

McLaren boss Ron Dennis said a wheel gun had failed, meaning the right-front wheel had not been attached properly.

The qualifying session was red-flagged while Hamilton was attended to, but officials quickly confirmed that he had been conscious and speaking.

Hamilton was taken by ambulance to the circuit's medical center.

What a race today! Can't beat a good bit of torrential rain to spice up a grand prix.

Well done to Fernando for a great win. The championship tussle is hotting up now.

Wow... long time no posts...

So, now that it's all down to Brazil who's going to win?

Going to be tough to keep Hamilton from it- he has been the most consistant driver this year... as long as McLaren don't get up to any more *brilliant* :dozey: strategies like last race.

Or he and Alonso could end up taking each other out... :stunned: That rivarly seems to get worse every week... sounds like Mclaren are going to send Alonso back to Renault next year.

And of course all Kimi needs is for McLaren to have a rare bad day mechanically... it does happen...

Briton Lewis Hamilton will start second in Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix as he attempts to become the first driver to win the title in his debut season.

Hamilton, aiming for his fifth win of the year, finished 0.151 seconds behind Ferrari's Felipe Massa in qualifying.

Kimi Raikkonen, currently third in the drivers' standings, will start from the second row at Interlagos.

We've got a bit of work to do but nothing too serious and it will be a good, clean fight for the championship

Hamilton, 22, will become Britain's first world champion since Damon Hill in 1996 if he wins or comes second in his McLaren on the Sao Paulo circuit.

Hamilton obstructed Raikkonen as he left the pits for the last time.

He apologised to Raikkonen but also maintained that, after his McLaren team warned him of the danger as he exited the pits, he had done his utmost not to affect the Finn's all important final quick lap.

"I apologise if I got in his way, but I didn't think he was that close to me," said Hamilton.

"I stayed where I was and braked. I didn't feel I hindered his lap, and I did get out of the way."

Raikkonen hinted that Hamilton might have handled things differently.

"For sure it didn't help - I ran wide after I went beside him and lost some time.

"I don't know exactly how much time we lost but for sure there could have been a slightly easier way to let me past.

"But it is what it is now. I would rather be in the front, but third is an OK place to start the race from."

Hamilton leads McLaren team-mate Alonso by four points, with Ferrari's Raikkonen a further three back entering the defining weekend of a thrilling championship.

McLaren boss Ron Dennis said of Hamilton: "It's almost all in his hands now. We've got a bit of work to do but nothing too serious and it will be a good, clean fight for the championship."

Home town hero Massa was fastest in Saturday morning practice and for much of the qualifying session.

Massa celebrated with an extra lap after qualifying finished, which will affect the amount of fuel he has available for the race.

"It's a great feeling to be back in Brazil and on pole," said the home favourite.

"I was a a little bit afraid Lewis would beat me on the second flying lap. The atmopshere is always amazing here with all the Brazil flags waving.

"We had a fantastic weekend last year and hopefully we can finish this race in similar fashion."

Scot David Coulthard will go off 10th in his Red Bull-Renault. Of his fellow Brits, Honda's Jenson Button missed out at the second stage and will start 16th, while Anthony Davidson takes 20th spot.

Renault's Heikki Kovalainen, seventh place in the drivers' championship, will start in 17th place after being eliminated at the Q1 stage for just the second time this season following a late mistake.

Hamilton escaped any personal sanctions after his McLaren team fitted two sets of wet-weather tyres to his car during the first practice session on Friday.

McLaren were fined 15,000 euros (£10,445) and made to return one set of wet tyres but with dry weather forecast for Sunday's race, that setback should not prove too damaging.

Brazilian Grand Prix qualifying times:

1. Felipe Massa (Brazil) Ferrari 1 min 11.931 secs

omg are you watching, hamilton fell to last place and he is 10th now :o

Massa first ,Raikkonen 2nd and Alonso 3rd

Massa will lett Raikkonen to overtake him in boxes and will be slowing alonso if hell be too fast...

Yeah,common ferrari!!!

I want either Raikkonen or Hamiliton to win.

I will be disappointed if Alonso wins

If Hammy moves up 2 more places to 5th and if the top 3 remains as it is (Kimi 1st, Massa 2nd, alondoze 3rd), than it will be going down to the wire

I think he will run out of time, and the title shall be Kimis :D

"Kimi Raikkonen wins the Formula One world championship."

:o

A few weeks back people were writing him out of the race, but what difference 2 races make.

I just watched this race and it was one of the most exciting ones since a long time. I really wanted Kimi Raikkonen to become champion and mercifully he did at the end. He deserves it so much, congratulations!

Poor Hamilton, but I'm sure he'll become champion sooner or later. He's very young and talented. Anyway, not a good weekend for UK in general, eh?!

Gotta love Kimi, so happy he finally won! Completely deserved it!! :D

Inquiry casts doubt on F1 title

Kimi Raikkonen's world title has been thrown into doubt following an inquiry into the cars of BMW Sauber and Williams at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Race stewards are investigating alleged irregularites with the cars' fuel.

Williams's Nico Rosberg was fourth in the race, followed by BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld.

If they were disqualified, McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton would be promoted to fourth, giving him enough points to displace Raikkonen as world champion.

The problem that could yet see Hamilton installed as the first man to win the title in his first season is a fuel temperature irregularity on the Williams and BMW Sauber cars.

A statement from the sport's governing body, the FIA, said the fuel in the cars was "more than [the permitted] 10 degrees below the ambient temperature".

Filling the car with cooler fuel can give a car an advantage. Cooler fuel is denser, so either it can mean it takes slightly less time to refuel the car or marginally more can be added in the same time.

And it would give a slight power advantage for about three laps before it returned to ambient temperature out on the track.

Excluding the cars would risk turning one of the most exciting championship finales in F1 history into a farce.

i'm gutted. :(

as much as i want(ed) hamilton to win, i really dont hope those three cars get disqualified. it would turn the whole thing into a joke. i didnt want raikonnen to win the title but i do think he deserves it.

McLaren to launch appeal

Raikkonen title uncertainly remains after McLaren say they will appeal stewards' decision

Last updated: 22nd October 2007

raikkonen_kimi_587203.jpg Hamilton congratulates Raikkonen

McLaren-Mercedes have said they will appeal the decision of Brazilian Grand Prix stewards to impose no penalty on the Williams and BMW Sauber teams for alleged fuel irregularities.

Race report | Have your say

The decision means that celebrations for both new world champion Kimi Raikkonen and his Ferrari team will have to be put on hold for the time being.

It also means that, in his rookie season, Lewis Hamilton could yet become Formula One World Champion.

The 22-year-old eventually finished seventh at Interlagos after making both a poor start and suffering gearbox problems on lap eight of the race which dropped him to 18th place.

Hamilton battled back through the field, but with Raikkonen taking the chequered flag for the sixth time this season, the McLaren youngster could not make the fifth place he needed to take the title.

Investigation

However, stewards launched an investigation after the race when cars entered by both Williams and BMW Sauber were found to be in breach of technical regulations regarding fuel temperatures.

It is understood the fuel temperature issue - specifically fuel that has been cooled - can give a car extra horsepower advantage, and so is a clear breach of the rules.

But, following a three-hour meeting, the stewards decided there was sufficient doubt over the temperature measurements and imposed no penalty on either team.

Had they done so then Williams driver Nico Rosberg, who finished fourth, and BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld, who came home fifth and sixth respectively, might have been stripped of their points.

Hamilton would therefore have been promoted to fourth place - more than enough to hand him the title.

But McLaren have claimed that two points made by the stewards in explaining why they chose not to impose penalties can be negated in minutes taken from the FIA's Sporting Working Group.

They have also insisted that, in light of the long-standing friction between the two teams - encapsulated this season in the 'spying' saga - the decision is not related to Ferrari's success.

However, a precedent from 12 years ago means that Hamilton's title hopes remain slim.

On that occasion - also in Brazil - Michael Schumacher, driving for Benetton Renault, and David Coulthard who at the time was with Williams, were initially disqualified as their fuel did not conform to samples approved by the FIA after finishing first and second respectively.

But a week later the FIA chose to reinstate the drivers' points, while the teams were not allowed to keep the points in the constructors' championship.

Should they choose to accept McLaren's appeal, the FIA's International Court of Appeal would then need to set a date for a hearing.

i'm gutted. :(

as much as i want(ed) hamilton to win, i really dont hope those three cars get disqualified. it would turn the whole thing into a joke. i didnt want raikonnen to win the title but i do think he deserves it.

Not if it's proved there was some cheating going on.;)
