I haven't listened to EITS in a while.. but I love the track The only moment we were alone. Another band worth checking out is Windy & Carl

Possibly my favourite genre. Amazing bands:

Oceansize - Mix between prog/post. My fave band.

REVERE - A bit like a post-rock Arcade Fire. New album coming out soon, they might be big. They participated in that radio 6 storm the charts campaign.

Sigur Rós - We should all know them really.

Iona - Celtic/atmospheric stuff.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Very long, pretentious stuff but rewarding and very beautiful when you get into it.

God Is An Astronaut - SO atmospheric.

Explosions in the Sky - If you're into Snow Patrol etc, heart-on-sleeve emotional stuff, you should really check these guys out.

Ólafur Arnalds - Pretty piano music. I say he's post-rock, but he's as much contemporary classical as anything; but he utilises drums etc.

Amusement Parks on Fire - Shoegazey post-rock.

And So I Watch You From Afar

Maybeshewill

Isis - The above three bands are good if you like instrumental music

Don't forget Caspian, Do Make Say Think, This Will Destroy You, Mono, Mogwai, Red Sparows, Hammock, The Album Leaf, Helios, Library Tapes, Arms and Sleepers, Stars of the lid etc.

I'm still confused as to classifying bands that are "post-rock"...

wikipedia says: a musical genre characterized by the use of instruments commonly associated with rock music, but using rhythms, harmonies, melodies, timbres, and chord progressions not traditionally found in rock. Post-rock musicians typically produce instrumental music.

Though the shorthand I've always been told is: The use of rock instrumentation for non-rock purposes.

However, the definition is so broad that the term by itself is about as useful as classifying 'rock bands'. Your classic post-rock bands are like Tortoise, Explosions In The Sky, This Will Destroy you, Mogwai etc. which resemble typical rock bands in all things except the structure and style of their music.

With the influence of Sigur Ros and Godspeed you black emperor there's become a pretty thin line between post-rock, post-classical and minimalist ambient. Generally if a band still uses modern guitars, percussion or keyboards, or if their musical goals or style is too modern to fit as classical, they're generally grouped into post-rock. Bands like [The] Slowest Runner [in All The World] (that aren't quite rock or classical) are a good example of this.

Then you have artists like The American Dollar, Trentemoller and Arms and Sleepers that skid the line between electronica, trip-hop and post-rock (it's debatable whether any of these artists are actually original enough to 'transcend' normal electronica). Though it would be more accurate to give them another name like post-trip hop, some fans would just consider that a subcategory of post-rock because the aforementioned bands all share similar musical goals. Similarly, Library Tapes, Fennesz, Eluvium, and Stars Of The Lid bear no immediate relation to explosions in the sky and Sigur Ros but are still often categorized as such because some don't define post-rock so much by the way it sounds, but by the way the artist's approach their music.

Post Rock sounds insulting .....ensulting? ....... ENSALTING! :smug:

Who would ever want to be in a category AFTER all the bands that rock?

I forget to mention For A Minor Reflection :nice: one of the guys is brother of one from Sigur Rós :shame: now i forget who is who lol

So who are the real post-rock musicians/bands?

I love Explosions in the Sky. I would love to get an album from them one of these days, but it's so expensive!

And they performed here before, but I'm quite sure I didn't know them at that time.

I've been listening to God Is An Astronaut, The American Dollar, Mono & World's End Girlfriend recently..:D
