By the Way is the eighth studio album by funk rock quartet Red Hot Chili Peppers, released on July 9, 2002.

By the Way was a smash hit album in many other countries. Critics gave it more positive bound reviews, favoring the fact that the Red Hot Chili Peppers' songwriting has matured greatly over the years. The overall album was heavily influenced by John Frusciante's work.

Overall' date=' the album leans more toward the melodic end of their oeuvre, but they have grown into this kinder, gentler mode organically, progressively working toward this groove little by little, album by album.[/quote']

Is This It is The Strokes' debut album, released in 2001. The Strokes were the first band to break into the mainstream as part of the turn-of-the-millennium garage rock trend.

Is This It is one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the 2000's.

Able to make the timeworn themes of sex' date=' drugs, and rock & roll and the basic guitars-drum-bass lineup seem new and vital again, the Strokes may or may not be completely arty and calculated, but that doesn't prevent Is This It? from being an exciting, compulsively listenable debut...[/quote']

XO is the name of the fourth album recorded by American singer-songwriter Elliott Smith.

The album was released on DreamWorks Records on 25 August 1998 on Compact Disc; Bong Load Custom Records released it on vinyl LP (no longer in print). It is also available as Digital Download. It was Smith's first release on a major label.

...

His sweetly dark melodies are vividly brought to life with the detailed arrangements, and they sell Smith's tormented songs -- it's easy to get caught up in the tunes and the sound of the record, then realize later what the songs are actually about. That's a sign of a good craftsman, and XO proves that not only can Elliott Smith craft a song, but he knows how to make an alluring pop record as well.

Illinois (pronounced [ˌɪ.lɨˈnɔɪ] or "ill-i-NOY"), also known as "Come on feel the Illinoise", is a 2005 concept album by American songwriter Sufjan Stevens, with songs referencing places and people related to the U.S. state of Illinois. It is his second album based on a U.S. state, part of a planned series of fifty that began with the 2003 album Michigan.

Critics have widely acclaimed Illinois, and the album was included on many "Best of 2005" lists in the Internet and print media.

The Queen Is Dead is the third studio album of The Smiths. It was released on June 16, 1986 by their U.K. record company, Rough Trade Records, and reached No. 2 in the British charts.

In 1997 The Queen Is Dead was named the 15th greatest album of all time in a 'Music of the Millennium' poll conducted by HMV, Channel 4, The Guardian and Classic FM. In 2003, the album was ranked number 216 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. In 2005 Channel 4 viewers placed it at number 20, and in 2006 Q magazine readers placed it at number 12. In 2000 Q placed it at number 27 in its list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever; in 2004, a similar list by The Observer Music Magazine's critics placed it at number 37, behind the band's eponymous debut which was 21st. It was ranked 5 in Spin's "100 Greatest Albums, 1985-2005" (2005). The German newspaper WAZ placed it at number 1. In June 2006, 20 years after its original release, NME dedicated almost a whole issue to the album. Much More Music placed it at 24 on Listed's Top 40 Album of the Past 25 Years.

Meat Is Murder may have been a holding pattern' date=' but The Queen Is Dead is the Smiths' great leap forward, taking the band to new musical and lyrical heights. Opening with the storming title track, The Queen Is Dead is a harder-rocking record than anything the Smiths had attempted before, but that's only on a relative scale -- although the backbeat is more pronounced, the group certainly doesn't rock in a conventional sense. Instead, Johnny Marr has created a dense web of guitars, alternating from the minor-key rush of "Bigmouth Strikes Again" and the faux rockabilly of "Vicar in a Tutu" to the bouncy acoustic pop of "Cemetry Gates" and "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side," as well as the lovely melancholy of "I Know It's Over" and "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out." And the rich musical bed provides Morrissey with the support for his finest set of lyrics. Shattering the myth that he is a self-pitying sap, Morrissey delivers a devastating set of clever, witty satires of British social mores, intellectualism, class, and even himself. He also crafts some of his finest, most affecting songs, particularly in the wistful "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side" and the epic "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out," two masterpieces that provide the foundation for a remarkable album.[/quote']

Pablo Honey is the first studio album by English rock band Radiohead, first released in early 1993. It contains the hit song "Creep". The album's title comes from a Jerky Boys prank call skit in which the prank caller states "Pablo, honey? Please come to Florida!" to his victim.

Radiohead's debut album' date=' Pablo Honey, is a promising collection that blends U2's anthemic rock with long, atmospheric instrumental passages and an enthralling triple-guitar attack that is alternately gentle and bracingly noisy. The group has difficulty writing a set of songs that are as compelling as their sound, but when they do hit the mark -- such as on "Anyone Can Play Guitar," "Blow Out," and the self-loathing breakthrough single "Creep" -- the band achieves a rare power that is both visceral and intelligent.[/quote']

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not is the debut album by Sheffield band Arctic Monkeys, released on 23 January 2006. Recorded at Chapel Studios, Lincolnshire, before the band's first world tour, the album became the fastest selling debut album in the UK since records began, selling over 360,000 copies in its first week.

It's not a totally perfect record' date=' for which we should be thankful - remember what happened to The Stone Roses after they'd released their flawless debut? - but it is an excellent first album, and gives notice that Alex Turner is already one of this country's best lyricists.[/quote']

All That You Can't Leave Behind is the tenth studio album by the Irish rock band U2, released in 2000 by Island Records in the UK and Interscope Records in the U.S. The album was ranked by Rolling Stone as the 139th greatest album of all time.

All That You Can't Leave Behind is a rock record from a band that absorbed all the elastic experimentation' date=' studio trickery, dance flirtations, and genre bending of Achtung, Zooropa, and Pop -- all they've shed is the irony. U2 also chooses not to delve as darkly personal as they did on Achtung or Zooropa, yet they also avoid the alienating archness of Pop, choosing to return to the generous spirit that flowed through their best '80s records.[/quote']

Ten is Pearl Jam's first album' date=' released on August 27, 1991 through Epic Records. The album has become one of the biggest-selling rock records ever and remains a constant presence on rock radio. Ten stayed on the Billboard charts for more than two years. As of April 2006, Ten has sold 9.4 million copies in the U.S. alone,[1'] and has been certified 12x Platinum by the RIAA. In 2006 Q magazine readers voted Ten the 59th greatest album of all time; in 2003 the TV network VH1 placed it at number 79. In 2003, the album was ranked number 207 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

...

Similarly, Eddie Vedder's impressionistic lyrics often make their greatest impact through the passionate commitment of his delivery rather than concrete meaning. His voice had a highly distinctive timbre that perfectly fit the album's warm, rich sound, and that's part of the key -- no matter how cathartic Ten's tersely titled songs got, they were never abrasive enough to affect the album's accessibility. Ten also benefited from a long gestation period, during which the band honed the material into this tightly focused form; the result is a flawlessly crafted hard rock masterpiece.

Silent Alarm is the debut album by British rock band Bloc Party' date=' first released on February 14, 2005, and charted at #3 in the Official UK Charts. It was nominated for the 2005 Mercury Music Prize. It was named NME's album of the year for 2005.[/quote']

Although it wouldn't hurt if there were more "party" (the celebratory kind' date=' not the political one) in Silent Alarm, it's still a fine debut album with a lot of passion and polish; it's hard not to respect, if not fully embrace, the intensity and integrity of Bloc Party's music.[/quote']

Showbiz is the debut album by English rock band Muse' date=' first released in 1999 by Mushroom Records.[1'] The album was produced by John Leckie at Sawmill Studios, Cornwall. The tracks "Uno", "Cave" (though never had a music video in support), "Muscle Museum", "Sunburn", and "Unintended" were released as singles.

The musical touchstone for the British trio Muse is obviously Radiohead and that fact is crystal clear from the smoldering opening cut' date=' "Sunburn." Their John Leckie-produced debut, Showbiz, is strong on angst-filled vocals, esoteric lyrics, and dramatic shifts in sonic dynamics. Hailing from rural England, singer/guitarist Matthew Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenholme, and drummer Dominic Howard average 20 years of age, so there's plenty of potential for them to grow into a sound that is more of their own. In the meantime, Bellamy does an impressive job of aping the quirky, nervous vocal tic of Thom Yorke on songs like the mid-tempo, Mellotron-driven "Muscle Museum," and he cuts loose vocally on the soaring "Cave" and on the lovely, mournful ballad "Unintended." Showbiz hints at the potential in this young band, and it should be of interest to many Radiohead fans.[/quote']
