Coldplay’s fourth album, due out on June 14th, will be called Viva la Vida. Singer Chris Martin chose it after seeing the phrase, which means “long live life,” on a painting by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, who endured polio, a broken spine, and chronic pain for decades. “She went through a lot of shit, of course, and then she started a big painting in her house that said ‘Viva la Vida,’” says Martin. “I just loved the boldness of it.”

Of course, Frida Kahlo will not be the first name that jumps to most peoples’ minds when they hear the phrase. “Everyone thinks it comes from Ricky Martin, which is fine. I have absolute respect,” says the singer, who gave Coldplay its original name, Pectoralz, and named his children Apple and Moses. “I’ve been through this before, naming something or someone and everyone saying that ‘That’s a terrible name’. But then saying, ‘Well, fuck you, that’s what it’s called, and I’ll be proved to be right eventually’. So when Viva la Vida came along, I was kind of annoyed because I’m going to have to try and convince everybody of this, but it just felt right.”

Check back later this week for the full report from Coldplay’s studio sessions for Viva la Vida, and for more insight into some songs that are slated to appear on the record, click here.

:surprised:

i love the title, very spanish.

Huummm . . .

Viva la Vida ??

But the Rolling Stone magazine was already wrong about

some little things . . . I don't know

But interesting stuff !!

Thank you !

What do you think people ??

Interesting!!Im sure it will grow on me!!Oooo!!It said check back later this week for a full report!!

omg:o

looks like the article i´ve been waiting for for years

I'm not too fussed on the title, if that's true, makes it sound like a novelty album.

Holy...

I'm a little shocked, lets just say.

Its still all like a dream. I havn't read it yet. Time to do that now.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

I KNEW IT WAS GOING TO BE CALLED VIVA LA VIDA. I KNEW IT.

Dumb name....even X&Y is better than that.

Well after reading it, I suppose its genuine. Its called Viva La Vida then. Wow.

And Chris is right, he's gonna get a lot of stick calling the album that. I liked Famous Old Painters better.

And the release date seems genuine enough.

If it's true about RS reporting sessions from the studio, then I'm excited.

I dunno, this is weird.

if this is true... it's an awful name...

hope it'll be a good album.. can't wait

It's a terrible name, it's like he wants it to be even harder to be a Coldplay fan without getting stick.

I hope there is something a little more official from the band soon!

God I know... I would be over the moon right now (I am excited though) but the name... well. I should have known really.

Oh well, guess we're gonna have to accept it. ;)

i don't think it's that bad of a name, really. i was hoping for something a bit more kick-ass and original and creative, but hey. while album title and artwork are important, what really matters is the MUSIC. i don't care if it's called piece of shit and the artwork is lame and cliche, as long as it's a good album i can live with the rest.

interesting that it's out the 14th...that's a saturday! most albums are released on tuesdays in the US!! but i won't be on vacation, so WHOOOOOOOOOOO!

OMG, i want to have a PARTY.

I hope there is something a little more official from the band soon!

Maybe something like "Ha! Had you going for a few hours there didn't we?"

Anything that can be associated with Ricky Martin is just bad.

Yea June 14th is a saturday. If this is the album title im sure it will all grow on us eventually. But i think Rolling Stone can be pretty reliable since theyve already listened to some tracks and it seems like the boys trust them to have them come into the studio.

Maybe Chris got wind of our delving into their secret site and so phoned up Rolling Stone and said "Hey do us a favour and print this to throw them off the trail" :P

One can but hope.

Maybe something like "Ha! Had you going for a few hours there didn't we?"

:laugh3: Yup I hope they're fooling us.

Interesting side note. I was watching Coldplay from Austin City Limits (yes I am starting to listen to COldplay again) and at the end Chris was talking about painters and stuff at the end.

Yay, glad you're happy with it! I dunno the name is gonna take some time getting used to, hell i'm sort of half hoping that the band will tell us otherwise. But As long as this is one of the only dissapointments, then bring on the album!

The music better be the most awesome thing ever tho.
