Pseudonym
Does anyone know what the deal is with the song "A Whisper" on Rush of Blood? Does anyone know the lyrics, and maybe why such a strange-sounding song made it onto such a big album? I just dont get what the point of the song is and why no one ever mentions it. Marisa
oh come on! don't hate. A Whisper is a masterpiece. But sadly a lot of people don't get it. Listen more carefully. Ā best part of the song: Night turns to day And I still have these questions Bridges will break Should I go forwards or backwards Night turns to day And I still get no answers Just a whisper, whisper, whisper, whisper A whisper, whisper, whisperĀ Ā :ears:
Famous Old Painter
It's like Swallowed In The Sea, a brilliant song which no-one seems to like or take seriously for some reason.
TraceOddity
It's one of my favorites. I think it's a little more like Twisted Logic in that it's not one the fans rave about, and it's rarely been done live.
Tnspieler1012
They came up with it when told that every album should have a song that 1-2-3--1-2-3--1-2-3 etc. It's probably the weakest on the album, but it serves as a powerful transition from the soft, acoustic-like feel of green eyes and warning sign. a wake-up call as it were. RunForTheHills
Swallowed In The Sea is crap! How can you not like that song? Actually, its definitely one of the better songs on X&Y. I like it better than Fix You, at any rate.Ā A Whisper... hmm. It's definitely not a bad song, and it certainly shows that Coldplay weren't afraid to put a more alternative track on such a crucial album. And along with the songs 'Daylight' and 'AROBTTH', it just makes the album more varied and interesting. Without those three songs, I reckon people would be complaining that Coldplay just made Parachutes 2.0. All in all, it shows progression in their sound.Ā And am I the only one who hears a bit of 'Come Together' in the bassline?

ApproximatelyInfinite
a whisper has never really been one of my favorites, really, but i certainly don't dislike it. and i agree with what everyone's said above about it being included to give AROBTTH more variety. it certainly breaks it up a little bit. though chris did say once that a whisper was the "most likely to become a b-side," so there we go. i don't think they're really in love with it either.Ā and swallowed in the sea IS one of my all-time favorites! there seem to be a lot of SITS haters, which i don't understand whatsoever, but to each their own, i suppose. but SITS is my favorite track off X&Y, most definitely. I don't think I've heard him talk about that the song very often, is all.Ā And yes, I'm one of those people who wanted SITS to be the 5th single instead of the Hardest Part (which I think is one of the weakest tracks on the album, by the way). I distinctly remember making a thread about it, actually.
ApproximatelyInfinite
^it actually wasn't in an interview, it was in one of those coldplay books look at the stars by gary spivack. in it there was a track-by-track thing about AROBTTH, and chris said that "a whisper" was most likely to have become a b-side out of all the tracks on the album, and that was pretty much all he said about it, which i took to mean he wasn't that crazy about it in general. all the little blurbs were short, i guess, but that one was particularly short. when i get home i can quote it more directly if you want :DĀ and swallowed in the sea really should have been the 4th single! though if it was, it should have had a music video with it, dammit. RunForTheHills
Oh yes, it was the 4th single wasn't it. I would have loved to see what they could have done with the video of that song, given all the imagery in the lyrics. A black and white video with Chris walking down an endless street at night, only lit by street lamps, comes to mind.Ā And thanks for the info! I've never read that book before even though I've seen it in Zavvi & HMV a few times. I'll need to dig out that AROBTTH interview CD to see what they said about it there, because its been a while since I heard it.
Stefan8
SITS as a single? Nah, I'd prefer White Shadows worldwide with a video! It's my favourite song on the album, with Square One my second-favourite.

(about the video), though i would have mine in color, with a nice little love story to go along with it. but a really long residential street at night lit by these orangey streetlamps with chris walking down it DEFINITELY would be incorporated. it's the kind of thing i think about every time i hear the song! it's one of those that i have my own little music video to.Ā i've always had a hard time working out exactly what chris sings in "a whisper," though. i mean, i've looked up the lyrics on several occasions, but for some reason they don't really stick in my head, perhaps because the words are hard to make out anyway. it's probably the ONLY coldplay song i consistently mess up the lyrics with when i'm belting it out while driving :laugh1:
Fixed
In the AROBTTH Interview, Will said:Ā "Without getting too sad and technical, it's a really interesting drum part. It stems from the fact that it is in this weird time signature. It sounds really cool. It sounds like it shouldn't work but it does for some reason". CRYSTAL
i have a live version from 2002 for this song. and i heard they played in 2005 too somewhere.:thinking:Ā and its there in my favorite songs list.Ā http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=coldplay+a+whisper&search_type=Ā i made a search here. Tnspieler1012
really? on the easytoplease.net setlists I only managed to find one concert (think it was '02) where they played a whisper, I think that's when they decided that it didn't work too well live. Chavi
A whisper is not one of my favorite Coldplay songs. There's better for sure. But It's still a good song. And I cant see any b-sides that would've been better on AROBTTH..Ā Will said during an interview back in 2006 : "there is one song that we physically cannot play as a band. It's called a whisper which is of our second record. We played it in the studio. It was just one freak kind of day that we recorded it. And then we tried to rerecord it 'cause we werent so sure about it. And we just couldnt play it again. We tried to play it live and we couldnt play it. It sounded absolute.. disgracefully bad. It was awful. So we dont play that one anymore."

Pseudonym
It's like Swallowed In The Sea, a brilliant song which no-one seems to like or take seriously for some reason.Ā I happen to love Swallowed In the Sea, its one of my favorite Coldplay songs. I just dont understand A Whisper because it doesnt really sound like any of their other songs, its loud, you cant undrstand the lyrics. Its not that I hate it, it just seems like a very odd choice to make it onto an album.
