It's U2, it's defenetly Beatles, but most of all COLPLAY.

we better get this thing on the forum in its entirety by wednesday or i think i'll explode :P

 

june 12/17 looks farther away than ever, i think, now that we have some idea of how this is going to go. not that getting the songs was a bad thing! it's just so much of a teaser for the entire thing....

And there's that low Chris vocal that I've been so looking forward too.

 

Yeah, much better, the falsetto is the only thing that bothers me on VH.

 

The vocals at the beginning really remind me of the Stone Roses.

Listened to it twice and I'm already utterly bored with it. It's the polar opposite of VH - warm, soft, and almost cheerful. Sorry, but give me dark and brooding any day.

 

My stylistic interpretation: VH owes more to AROBTTH; ASARY owes more to X&Y.

Agreed. The album obviously needs some slow, beautiful songs, but this really sounded just... boring. Don't get me wrong, Chris's vocals were great, but that's about all there was to the clip(may be different in the full song). I like VH because it's the next step; Parachutes, AROBTTH and X&Y were all quite different styles, and if VLV is like this song, it'll be more of X&Y V2 than step 4. I'll wait til the full thing is out to pass judgement, but as of now I think VLV needs to be more VH than this.

 

And I can't believe people are calling VH boring? It's got so much - a big range in Chris's singing, amazing drumming by Will, Jonny's smooth guitar solo, some of the best lyrics they've ever written, and the lovely piano ending - how is it boring? It's very different from their previous music while still keeping that Coldplay sound. Surely that's better than this song, which as many have pointed out, sounds like U2? Yeah, U2's great and all, but Coldplay isn't U2.

Me too! I love how both VH and A Spell A Rebel Yell are somewhat opposites yet they are quite cohesive.

I knew i wasn't the only one who heard old Genesis, Peter Gabriel!

 

I'm glad I'm not the only one too. I'm a HUGE Geneses/Gabriel fan, so this make my day!

 

If you listen to the instrumental piano version, the chords are so Tony Banks it makes you cry.:)

this song sounded like sleeping sun did to me when i first heard it, its different, very weird, but i really like it, i didnt expect coldplay to make a track like this

1st: Violet Hill is the BEST song made by Coldplay;

2nd: This preview ROCKS (It isn't not better nor worse than VH, it's just DIFFERENT, completely different from VH);

3rd: Why the heck do you talk about X&Y as a bad album?!?!?! It's a GREAT album!!

 

Anyway, I can listen A LOT of U2 and a bit of Genesis (Watcher Of The Skies) in this music, OMFG, if this music isn't good enough to be in VLVODAAHF, I can't even imagine what'll be on that album, I think it'll change the music history of whole world.

VIOLET HILL is strong and confident..u guys haven't switched sounds and have accepted this sound of Coldplay..im surprised that alot of u were dissapointed with violet hill :///

 

it has strong lyrics and guy berrymans playing is great along with jonny buckland.. weren't u guys in awe with his guitar playing??

chris sound strong and its like he is singing an anthem...very strong lyrics and pure..u have to grow up from the old coldplay and be willing to accept this.

 

Violet Hill is what it is and A Spell A Rebel Yell is what it is also.

 

its like ur saying Swallowed in the Sea and White Shadows.

 

oh and about the U2 comparisons..its just annoying.

this thread actually ISNT about violet hill... weird right? so maybe everyone could stop talking about it UNLESS it relates to this clip...

 

but about the U2 comparisons... people make them because U2 was around long before coldplay. and yes, U2 sound like themselves, coldplay sound like themselves also, but this certain clip just draws comparisons to the sound of U2. coldplay has their own distinct sound and i agree they have evolved into a different sound but on this PARTICULAR song it is a bit similar to U2... i'm really not a fan of comparing one bands sound to another either but i just really hear it on this one. i'm thinking we should wait for the whole song till we really make assumptions like this anyway... haha im completely contradicting myself now so i'm gunna stop.

Yes Coldplay and U2 are similar in style. However, in the end most music is built around the piano. And U2's around the guitar. Major difference, even though guitar figures into Coldplay's music largely as well.

I could hrdly stand to sit on my computer chair yesterday,lol. Better now.

 

Part of the U2 comparison definitely comes from Eno's influence, imo. He's used some similar techniques on both Coldplay's and U2's albums, so of course people will hear that.

 

I like that it's VERY different from Violet Hill, because as I said before, I think a good b-side should contrast the single, and since this is sort of a singls, that holds for me.

A Spell A Rebel Yell is very U2.

 

and for me, the first thought that came to mind when I heard Violet Hill, was the Genesis song That's All.

 

I am so excited for Viva La Vida album. I love both U2 and Genesis.
