livetrans.jpgColdplay.com picture uploading issues

September 8, 2010 10:25 am

We've having a few problems with our servers..

Good morning. As you may have noticed if you're tried (and failed) to upload any pictures to our Live Transmissions or Exhibition Room areas in the last couple of days, we're having some problems with the website's servers, which are hosted by EMI. This is also preventing us from updating the Exhibition Room itself each day.

The label tell us they're doing everything they can to resolve the problems. Apologies for this - hopefully it'll be fixed soon. We'll let you know when it is.

In the meantime, did you ever see the Winner of the National Student Television Association Award for Best Music Video 2006?

Good evening. On October 25th, two sisters from Alabama known as The Pierces will release a new EP, Love You More. It was produced by our very own Guy Berryman alongside Coldplay producer Rik Simpson, so we got in touch with Catherine (pictured, left) to find out a bit more. The Pierces are also offering Coldplay fans a free download of their To The Grave track, which you can get from here.

Hello Catherine, how are you?

I'm very well, thank you. We arrived in London two days ago and so far we are miraculously jet lag free. Also our hotel gave us a free upgrade to a lovely suite...so we are feelin' lucky.

For those Coldplay fans who haven't heard of The Pierces, what do you sound like?

Our newest record is really big and beautiful and melodic. We keep getting compared to Fleetwood Mac which is a compliment we'll take any day.

How long have you been going?

We've been singing together since we were little kids but we've been doing it professionally for over 10 years now.

Is it true that you were about to split up when Guy called and asked you to support Coldplay in South America?

That is true. We were just really frustrated with our label at the time and we'd had so many years of almost making it. We felt stuck so we thought maybe we should split up and do solo records. Then we got the call from Guy and was a very clear sign that we should stay together...for at least one more record!

And although you didn't do the tour, you did end up working with Guy?

Yeah, the tour didn't happen, it kept getting postponed, but Guy had some free time so we decided to record some songs. It was clear pretty quickly that we were onto something good. He brought Rik in and it just all came together.

What were Guy and Rik like to work with as producers?

They're great. We loved working with them. We had so much fun in the studio but at the same time they were total pros...they know how to get shit done!

And you recorded in the Bakery? How was that?

It's an amazing place to record. It has a great vibe and the boys made us feel right at home. We are so happy we got the chance to make music there...unbelievable.

Guy and Will also contributed musically to the recordings. What exactly did they do?

Will played drums on a few tracks and Guy played bass on everything and some percussion here and there.

And presumably you're pleased with the finished article?

We love it. We can't wait for people to hear it.

So, what are your plans for the rest of the year?

We are going to launch the record in the UK and then we plan to tour. We'll actually find out today about our first shows. We're itching to get out there and play again, it's been a while.

Finally, whenever we interview musicians for Coldplay.com, we ask what their favourite Coldplay track is?

We love The Scientist. It's just so sad and beautiful. Kinda wish it was one of ours....maybe we should cover it :)

Okay so I go to coldplay.com right now, and it just shows up as a Kylie Minogue advertisement. It won't go to coldplay.com. I mean, I know some of the crew are infatuated with Kylie, but come on... :dozey:

Roadie #42 - Blog #122

September 16, 2010 6:35 pm

Our man on the inside is back...

Oh yes, I should have mentioned that we were going away for our summer holidays....

blog122.jpg

But today, like legions of kids across the land being dragged away from their Xboxes (or their surfboards...) we're back to school. Interestingly and somewhat predictably, we've spent the last ten days prepping the studio ready for what we thought would be our first lesson - only to have the timetable turned firmly on its head within the first hour of the band being in the building.

The natural response is to curse, tut and whine about moving goalposts, but we've long since learned that this is simply the way the creative process works. The band are attempting, after all, to create something from nothing. So planning the route is as much guesswork as anything else. As things begin to develop, the best way forward becomes clearer.

This, of course, is easy to type several days after the fact, made all the more easy by a good healthy dose of tutting and cursing which helped to smooth the transition.

After much discussion and frantic re-arrangement of the studio, the afternoon begins with the band in a circle and playing together. The results are pretty special.

I remember a long time ago discussing with a mate how driving a car very fast wasn't really that impressive. He said, "It's not like The Flintstones, where you've got your feet through the floor powering it yourself". In a way, making "huge sounding" music can be the same. It can be a triumph of machinery, when all the driver is doing is pressing his foot on a pedal.

Here and now, "big sounding" is some distance away, as the band are pretty much as close to silence as it's possible to get whilst still playing music. As a result, it's less like watching a racing driver and more like witnessing a high wire act. All poise, balance and the ever-present possibility that it could all go south at any moment.

Everyone in the room is still. I click the mouse button on my laptop and receive a disapproving raising of eyebrows from co-producer Rik Simpson. It becomes one of those moments where you're a little afraid to exhale in case it bursts the bubble or breaks the spell.

Our first week back continues in exactly this vein. "The plan" becomes a pinball, bouncing off different points of enthusiasm at alarmingly regular intervals. In all honesty, it would be pointless me trying to explain where we're going right now. By the time we're halfway there, we'll be going somewhere else.

Hell of a ride though....

Roadie #42

Well, that was kind of disappointing... :disappointed: *feels bad for thinking that*

Yay  Even though all he's told us that they changed their mind about something and play silent songs :P Is still great to have that little nugget of info :cheesy:

NEWS YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY WOOOOHHOOOOOOOOOOO

I'm so glad he updated, but that was definitely a major disappointment. I was expecting more for the amount of time he was gone... :/ Oh well, better than nothing!

I Hoped he would have written more after leaving us in the lurch for so long; I Guess they really haven't gotten much done :P

It seems to be it's all confusing inside studio...and guys don't have too much inspiration...I hope they can get better about it (well, that's my honest opinion)
