I don't think I could disagree more, but still, each to their own. Just look at Radiohead nowadays - I don't see any fancy get ups there, and I guess they're even bigger than Coldplay to a certain extent. Thom Yorke wears pretty "ordinary" clothes on and off the stage. You don't need a dress code to be "big", in my opinion. And I don't see why people should feel that how they dress should somehow match their status as a band and the quality of their music. Taking your quote about a band saying "you shouldn't care what we look like, it's all about the music"... well actually, unless they look like tramps, I don't see why it should matter. But as long as the guys are fine with dressing the way they are now, I'm all for it - like i said, I think the outfits themselves are pretty cool. I just wouldn't mind a return to the Parachutes & AROBTTH era mindset, of "image isn't everything". The music should really speak for itself.

I don't mean bands should dress up, I just think they should look like they've made an effort. They did it for AROBTTH but if you look at the early CP days they could pass for tramps. And that white, long-sleeved t-shirt Chris used to wear was almost uniform he wore it so much.

I suppose you're right about Radiohead, although didn't Phil wear a white suite for all for of the HTTT tour? And Ed has a reputation for dressing badly on stage, apparently he used to wear the bands own merch at one point. I think some RH fans once clubbed together to send him some new clothes.

True, image isn't everything, but it counts for more than it ever has and I'm glad Coldplay are expressing themselves in different ways. I suppose I'd be slightly disappointed if they said "WE'RE BACK!" and turned up looking like some blokes down the pub.

I like the way they change style, it helps define their image as a band and helps differentiate them from the Snow Patrols and Athletes of the world.

and i think that the beatles did just wear whatever the hell they wanted (besides with sgt. pepper, but they only did that for the cover and not many other places). they didn't really make an effort to coordinate, it seems, whereas other bands do.

I'm not an expert on the Beatles but pre-Rubber Soul (I think) they all wore pretty much identical clothes. Plus, later on they wore some pretty strange clothes.

Anyway, I've gone on far too long and it now looks like I'm obsessed with this topic, go me!

Oh yes, that make-up thing on the billboard cover gave me a little bit of a fright today, and I'm hoping it's just a one off. Hoping and praying.

Because I also would be disappointed in them going down that route. For me, it would be like the band that I knew in 2004/2005 had died, and that would be quite saddening for me. They don't need to do this stuff. I honestly had never imagined that Coldplay, of all bands, would start wearing make-up of any kind until today. Its just not THEM. And its also too Panic In The Disco, which is really what this whole dressing up thing reminds me of a little bit.

So, in short my request is, take off the bruise Chris, put down the magnifying glass, and go and find that Rolling Stones t-shirt that you wore 8 years ago in the Shiver video. :P

haha, i'm obsessed too :D i think this is a pretty good debate we've got going on!

yeahhhh, stupid me COMPLETELY forgot about the beatles pre-rubber soul! *smacks forehead*. and i call myself an expert :dozey:. you're very right on that part, but given the day and age, i think dressing up in matching suits was the ONLY way that they could have edged into music like they did. their music was so shocking to the older generation at the time that they had to look very clean-cut (well, updated clean cut with the thin ties and thick lapels) in order to not be considered hooligans that just wanted to shake things up. if they came on with their leather garb onto the ed sullivan show in 1964, parents and the older set would have had a complete heart attack, and i think overall they would have been a bit less acceptable.

in the later days, though, i think they wore whatever the hell they wanted to...it just so happened that they wore what was in style at the time, which was completely outrageous by today's standards. that stuff was streetclothes back then!

my point is that because wearing the everyday street clothes worked fine for parachutes and AROBTTH, it should still work fine now, and i think it would. and i personally don't think they looked trampy in the early days! :laugh3: i'm quite partial to t-shirts (especially the funny ones) and jeans and hoodies myself, so i feel like i can relate to them a bit better when they wear that stuff. that's just me attempting to explain why i like that look better. really, as long as the music is superb, i don't care what they do. it's just that i happened to like the music best (so far, of course) when the "look" was everyday and simple. that tends to hold true with my general music tastes as well. :D

haha, agreed on all points! and DEFINITELY on the rolling stones t-shirt count, mostly because i own the same one :D

now that's what this all reminds me of! panic at the disco! eeek. i REALLY hope the makeup never surfaces again. i used to be afraid of bowie as a kid for that very reason. makeup reminds me of panic, KISS, bowie...opens up an interesting path of possibilities, one that i'm not in love with, personally.

It was a bit weird seeing Chris with make-up on his face but I just think it's cool that he wants to do that. Although Bono and Michael Stipe both wore/wear make-up so I should've seen it coming.

It's clear that musically they wanted to get away from what made them 'them' and so why shouldn't that go into other areas? I'm sure similar things must've been said when U2 went from dressing up as cowboys to dressing in drag/MacPhisto and all that. I don't see what the fuss is all about, the music's better than it's ever been and they're just playing with their image.

i must admit im not minding the stuff, its all goint towards the theatricality of it all. theyre a big rock band, and the way the music is sounding from viva la vida, i couldnt see them in normal white t and jeans. the makeup seems like it might be some kind of joke with war paint type thing, playing off violet hill maybe...just a guess.

if coldplay released a different type of album maybe different clothes would be warranted, and these aren't exactly off the deep end like some other bands do (ie panic at the disco as posted here).

i couldnt pull off wearing anything like this, im jeans and t shirt, but from a band with coldplays style now, i say why not?

Ah, you have the same one? Cool! :D

Oh yes, Bowie, Kiss, Boy George also. I don't want to be adding Coldplay to that list, thank you. As someone said, it all seems to be sounding like a circus of somekind, with talk of these gymnasts and everything. A bit of a parade. A Black Parade... oh god. :laugh3:

that's a very good point, actually. i just tried imaging them doing the VLV itunes commercial or performing VH or other songs we've heard in whatever venues, and the old AROBTTH/parachutes street clothes don't really fit the image.

i suppose everything is just part of a band's evolution, but it's just always been that my favorite bands (and my favorite eras of my favorite bands, like U2 and the beatles) wore what they want when they wanted to and didn't feel the need to dress up. i'm not exactly opposed to it or anything, it's just something new that i have to think about .

makeup is something i'm a bit less comfortable with though. macphisto still scares the crap out of me, and i tend to get a bit distracted by all michael stipe's facepaint because it looks so damn uncomfortable :laugh3:. i just like to focus on the music and the lights and the videos on the screen at the concert rather than what the guys are wearing :P.

agreed. facepaint is definitely odd, and i think if they incorporated into the tour or videos or more appearances, i might be a little miffed. that being said i think its all in good fun. but yeah, coldplays old sound (which still permeates in their songs from time to time) was perfect for the stuff they wore, but if they wore that stuff with these songs, which are definitely different, on a musical and lyrical scale. i mean, chris didn't use to use a lot of references to other things like he does in viva la vida and violet hill, which seem to come from a different world and perspective. this different world requires a different dress.

I like the colors added... and fits into the mood of the music...should we expect the same old thing from Coldplay... hell, no!!! Go on with your bad ass selves and hope to see something different and exciting at the show! I hope Chris jumps off a trampoline or something and does a mid-air flip!!! Whoohoo! I just said that to piss you all off! We don't want anyone to hurt themselves... but tighter pants, yes! You still need room to dance around, Chris. I like the bit of color on the ass. Nice touch! :D

Art is a huge theme to this album as im sure it will be to the live show, im sure they view the new style as "art", much like they describe their new music. I personally like the theme there are parts of the wardrobe that I don't like but to me it looks conceptual and artistic.

In the end I always say...its their band and music, they can do what they want. I don't see Coldplay as one to play off what others think or do...I think we just all find ways to make it look that way.

I agree, I think the new outfits are interesting, they aren't too "out there" odd, and they fit the lyrics. I think the musical styles of each album have fit they way they dressed for each album, and if they think it helps the mood of the album I don't see why they shouldn't. :P
