New Coldplay album leaked to net

Coldplay's hotly-anticipated new album has been illegally put on the internet a week before its UK and US release.

The profits of record company EMI had fallen after the release of X&Y was delayed.

The leak took place on Monday, the day copies were sent to UK radio stations and the day before it went on sale in Japan, its first country of release.

An EMI spokeswoman said tight security had successfully kept the album under wraps until then.

She said: "EMI's anti-piracy efforts have been extremely effective in the pre-release protection of Coldplay's X&Y."

The music industry has battled internet "pirates" in recent years, arguing that fans are less likely to buy the CD if they have already downloaded the album for free.

Coldplay's importance to EMI was highlighted when profits fell 13% after X&Y and an album by Gorillaz were delayed.

Locked-up iPods

Security measures included hosting album playbacks at venues such as

Abbey Road Studios for journalists and industry figures instead of sending them copies.

A listening room in EMI's headquarters was equipped with iPods in locked cabinets and CDs that were sent out were labelled with a false name - The Fir Trees - to throw would-be pirates off the scent.

Coldplay themselves have not shown the highest regard for EMI's commercial fortunes.

"Shareholders are the great evil of this modern world," singer Chris Martin said recently.

"I don't really care about EMI. I'm not really concerned about that."

Will history repeat itself today?

History would only repeat itself if it leaked on the 11th of June (the day before the album is released in Japan).

Leaked or not, I'm still definatly going to buy the physical album.

Having some music on a burnt disc or MP3 just isn't the same as actually having the CD.

I would also add in a remark about how we should support them by buying their album, but i just paid £300+ for gig tickets.

lol

But I agree - the level of work that has gone into the production of VLVODAAHF just makes it impossible to not buy the cd. I, for one, can't wait to flick through the little booklet. I would download it if it came out early but I'm definitely gonna buy the cd. Plus, since I only paid £100+ on tickets, I can say that we should buy the album to support them:P

If you bought 7 tickets the LEAST you can do is buy 7 albums:D

Hey, i look back to 2005 and realized we had 50 sec clips of all of the X&Y songs 17 days before the album came out.

Three years ago, I almost bought one CD every month. Three years ago, I did not download piracy at all. Three years ago, I hate the evil iPod. Three years ago, I bought X&Y on the release day. The staff hadn't made it on display yet so they got it for me from the storage room...

Now, I almost stop buying any CD, download piracy everyday and and am using an iPod. But YES I am going to wait until the release day to get Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends!!

"Throw those curtains wide, one day like this a year'll see me right..."

Are those the correct lyrics to that Elbow song?

I feel exactly the same. I was so looking forward to rushing to the shops to buy AROBTTH and X&Y and hearing it for the first time, but now with the digital age it feels I've been forced into downloading, seeing as my local record shops have all closed down and anything really worthwhile buying is over the internet so it takes 2 weeks to reach my place anyway. It's not the same.

Regardless, I'm gonna download the album as soon as it becomes availbile. The CD and 12" are gonna take about 2 weeks to reach me from the UK and god knows I cant wait that long. I cant even wait until the Japanese release date!

June 12th is going to be insane here.

Can't fucking wait.

Dude - yes, yes it will be mad here lol

C'mon June 12th....

Honestly, the band doesn't make that much money at all off of album sales. Most of their money is in the touring and merchandise. Still, go out and buy the album, but it's not like Coldplay's gonna go without anything to eat because of a leak.

That's why Chris Martin could care less if it leaks. The only ones really hurt by it are EMI because they don't make money off of the tour.

A study done in Canada also found that piracy INCREASES album sales. Imagine a guy who's never been a Coldplay fan and who would never in a million years buy the album, decides to download the leak to check it out, loves it and so he goes and buys it. It happens all the time and I'm proof of that, that's how I've discovered many of my favorite bands.

And in this crazy, mixed up world that last part actually makes sense:thinking:

tomorrow they perform Viva La Vida live on the MTV Movie Awards!

that's fair enough!

I thought I found a leaked torrent and it looked legit but the files wouldn't extract right so I'm guessing they're not legit.
