As everyone knows, Coldplay's life changing new album, Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends, arrives in stores next week. And, as you may have heard, it will shoot directly to the top of the charts, sell more copies than any CD ever, and save the band's once-troubled record label from imminent bankruptcy. Then, naturally, a flying unicorn will descend from heaven and Chris Martin will ride it around the world, delivering presents to all the children who believe in magic. That was the plan, we guess. But then, last week, the album leaked, and yesterday, Coldplay's record-label president got shit-canned and the band announced the postponement of its world tour citing "production delays" (perhaps the giant posters of Chris Martin's face haven't yet come back from the printer).

Now, EW is reporting that Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III (out yesterday) is set to be this week's No. 1 album, possibly moving as many as 950,000 copies, which would certainly make it the year's fastest-selling album so far. Given that Coldplay's last record, X&Y, made its chart debut with only a measly 737,000 in 2005 (back when there was still some semblance of a recording industry), and the unlikelihood that the nationwide number of CD-purchasing Coldplay fans has increased in the past three years, it stands to reason that Viva La Vida's sales will probably be overshadowed by Carter III's. Adding insult to injury is the fact that Martin's alleged friend Kanye West has launched a blog crusade to help Weezy's album crack the 1 million mark. That sound you hear is angels crying.

It doesnt say anything...

even if lil sale 1 million copyies in his first week... in his second he will sell... 400 K well said?

coldplay will sale more than 400 K in their first week and the article says that too...

I think they will be number 1, maybe secone in years biggest opening but still 1's in their first week.

New York times don't like Coldplay though, do they.

I think they shouldn't be so quick to discount their success, they're a British band the fact that they're even completing to be album of the year in America is huge achievement.

Definitely not in the UK, even if U2 brought out a new one I don't think they would topple Coldplay's first week sales over here. They've already sold 300,000 and it's not even out yet.

If Lil Wayne is out this week he'll go to number 1 this week, so Coldplay might be number 1 next week. You just not with as high first week sales.

That is very bad, that garbage like lil wayne will sell more than coldplay!!

But rap artists only sell well in first 15 weeks after their albums have big drops in sales

And i guess Coldplay will do around 550, 000 in US on first week

Worldwide Coldplay will of course do better than lil wayne in first week so they still can have biggest debut this year

I really hope that Viva la vida becomes their most sucessful record at least in US.

same. even though i do feel slightly weird about them promoting things like ipods and itunes all of a sudden, a) that commercial is SO BEAUTIFUL, and b) it got the song a lot of exposure and sparked a lot of peoples interest. i think that song alone (well, and VH, too, i guess) will sell a couple thousand more albums.

They were promoting their own album/song on iTunes.

Hey guys relax! CP will be #1 in the US next week, if not this one.

And anyway, we all know that the NEW YORK TIMES hates Coldplay.

BUT REMEMBER THIS:

Not too long ago, a reporter for the NY Times was caught making up stories with absolutely no basis in fact

That once proud institution has fallen a loooooooong way. Hell, I'd trust the NY Post over the NY Times any day! (Any day I'm in NYC, of course!)

:D Chin up!

a.) what we care about is that coldplay put out a good album, which they did, and showed the world, themselves, and the fans, that they are willing to expand themselves. THis is the beginning of the kind of discography that people will look back on.

b.) who gives a shit how much they sell. really. they don't need it, and EMI has dicked over thousands of employees, and in staggering the release date needlessly like they have, they asked for bootleggers. You can't have a ramp up like they have for VLV anymore. It's a fantastic album, and that's all that matters. Not a rotten apple in it.

i can't believe how worked up people are getting about whether they will or won't hit no. 1. Since when does that matter at all. you buy your album, you enjoy it. VLV will sell a shitload, and keep selling.

you all want to support a band that needs your help? when you buy the coldplay album buy every copy of "rising down" by the roots off the shelf, because if they don't move some units, they've got no deal and you can kiss complex hip hop music goodbye, and watch one of the most efficient, creative, and respectful rappers in the world disappear. Go buy a couple dozen copies of "the seldom seen kid" by elbow ( if you live in the US) or "boxer" by the national. Get irate that Lil' Wayne will sell more albums in two days than the roots have in the past 8 years combined.

And some of you are sounding incredibly prejudiced with your anger towards Wayne. Like, disturbingly so. So chill. You don't like hip-hop, fine. But that does not mean your opinion is valid.
