The Sun UK: Coldplay Returns With Brilliant Live Gig

Viva Coldplay

Chris Martin compared the Coldplay live comeback to a pre-season friendly last night.

The singer told the crowd of friends and family at London’s Wembley Arena that getting back on stage was like a trip to the football with his dad when he was a nipper. He said: “Excuse us for this embarrassing shambles of a rehearsal. This reminds me of when my dad, who is 107, took me to Torquay for a pre-season game against Liverpool — and they were absolutely shit. We see this as a pre-season and we’ll be on it when the season starts. Luckily none of you have spent a blind penny.”

In typically modest fashion, Chris was only telling half the story. Coldplay were brilliant as they made their return to the stage in front of an almost empty venue. When it comes to seeing live shows, this job lands some great tickets. But one of the best I’ve ever had was last night’s. Within 30 seconds the audience were smiling as single Violet Hill kicked in with a video montage playing in the background.

World leaders including George Bush and Tony Blair had been edited to dance along to the song. Next song Clocks kicked in and the crowd were on their feet.

The band showed off their wealth with six fancy video orbs, hanging from the ceiling which cost the band a jaw-dropping £900,000. Chris performed his trademark lyric-changing to suit the gig, poking fun at relatives and pals who had turned up to see them on free tickets. And his wife, actress Gwyneth Paltrow, sang along while standing in front of the lighting desk.

Normally you would say the crowd got their money’s worth but even if tickets were £100 each it would have been a snip. The band moved from the main stage to a tiny platform in the middle of the arena and were almost elbowing each other off stage as they played.

They made plenty of mistakes but that was the whole point of the exercise. By the time they have perfected it the show will be unmissable. It’s brilliant to have one of Britain’s best live bands back.

Nope, just rehearsals for that and the forthcoming gigs

so we finally know what the magic balls are :D

Thanks for the article :nice:

Sounds cool, I remember them saying they did a rehearsal in front of friends and family last time around. Is a good idea :D

£900,000 though?! That's stupidly expensive!

Small blurb form The Mirror:

Coldplay's hot set

The nerves have been getting to Coldplay as they release their first album in three years.

After Chris Martin stormed out of an interview with Radio 4, we didn't know what to expect when we got to their exclusive rehearsal concert at Wembley last night for 900 family and friends.

But the lads were in vintage form. And the crowd - including Mrs Martin, Gwyneth Paltrow - cheered them on as they played songs from their new album, which is destined to be a best-seller.

Chris joked: "Thanks so much for coming to this embarrassing shamble of a rehearsal. I feel like this is a pre-season for us.

"But next time, if you want to come back, you'll see a vast improvement."

ooooooh they can't play Reign Of Love live, I can't be crying in public :laugh3:

Wow, this is exciting!

Big question though is did The Sun make a mistake and call Death and all His Friends, If Death will Ever Conquer Me, by mistake?

Or is it actually going to turn out to be a new song?!?!

They put a pic on the official website

Coldplay Play Wembley Arena Gig For Family And Friends

Ahead of world tour...

Coldplay Play Wembley Arena Gig For Family And Friends

Coldplay warmed up for their forthcoming world tour by performing to 900 specially invited guests at Wembley Arena in London last night (June 13th).

The audience, which consisted mainly of family and friends, were treated to a full 16-song set from the band, who return to the road on Monday (June 16th) with a concert at the Brixton Academy.

Joking with the audience, frontman Chris Martin told them to excuse “this embarrassing shambles of a rehearsal.”

“This reminds me of when my dad, who is 107, took me to Torquay for a pre-season game against Liverpool — and they were absolutely shit,” he said.

“We see this as a pre-season and we’ll be on it when the season starts. Luckily none of you have spent a blind penny.”

The band’s set comprised largely of songs from their new album ‘Viva La Vida’, which sold 125,000 copies when it was released on Thursday (June 12th).

The album, the bands fourth record, is expected to top the charts on Sunday.

See Gigwise’s shots of the band in action below… (I believe those photos come from the X&Y era since Chris has coloured bands on his fingers and the MTF sign in his hand.

Wow, this is exciting!

Or is it actually going to turn out to be a new song?!?!

i think it could be really a new song cause this is in the list of songs that did not make the final cut... in the last triple M video we can read this title in the list of recorded songs. hope to hear it soon!

NEW SONGGGG. Maybe the songs that weren't on the album (Glass of Water, Famous Old Painters) will be played at gigs now. WHY ISN'T IT DECEMBER YET?!

Seriously though, this is exactly why I love Coldplay, a free gig won't have been free to them and yet they did something really nice for their family and friends, you won't catch many acts doing that. It's so nice :)

Would like to know if they've done anything different with Viva though, will be disappointed if they haven't. And if they play Yes on tour, I will die of joy. If they were only going to play one song from X&Y though, I'd never have thought it'd be Fix You :S

Yeah you're right, they will have had to hire (for lack of a better word) Wembley for the night, and considering that meant the arena losing a whole night of tickets sales it must have been expensive. Very nice thing to do indeed, especially when they could have just stuck them all in the Bakery

I'd love to hear/see more about this gig.

I wouldn't read too much into the setlist... that's pretty much the whole of VLV... i'd guess they are practicing all of them, but will be looking to perhaps replace a few each night with some older songs???

I hope so, my fingers are obviously crossed for White Shadows. It wasn't a single, so it damnwell better be on the setlist for Sheffield or I'll be having words. With myself :( Whilst the people around me look quizzically at each other and wonder if I should be sectioned :(
