Coldplay have shot straight to the top of the UK albums chart - despite their record having been on sale for just three days.

The band's fourth album, Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends, has sold 302,000 copies since Thursday.

It has become one of the fastest-selling records in history.

Meanwhile, dance act Mint Royale remains at the top of the singles chart with Singin' In The Rain, which was featured on ITV's Britain's Got Talent.

R&B singer Rihanna stayed at number two with Take A Bow, followed by Ne-Yo with Closer.

The highest-placed new entry in the singles chart was Feeder's We Are The People, which charted at number 25.

The new release from Coldplay - whose last album, X&Y, has sold 10 million copies since 2005 - had been hotly-anticipated.

In May, the band's website collapsed after Violet Hill - the first single from the album - was made available for seven days as a free download on the band's website.

Gennaro Castaldo, of music retailer HMV, said: "Coldplay have sold as many albums in three days as most big artists sell in three months.

"They have the broadest appeal of any band around in terms of combined record store, online and download sales, and are already certs to have the biggest release of 2008."

Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends pushed last week's number one, Paul Weller's 22 Dreams, into fourth place, behind veteran Neil Diamond's Home Before Dark and Duffy's Rockferry.

Other new entries included indie-rockers The Fratellis, who charted at number five with Here We Stand, and hip-hop production trio NERD whose Seeing Sounds album entered at number 20.

Just OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.

302,074 in 3 days... fucking breaking the X&Y record...

great news - not unexpected, but still great

hopefully they're lined up for a US #1 too - Lil Wayne is definitely gonna be at the top this week, but he should have dropped by the time it's released over there

It was obviously never in doubt........ but after the likes of that damn crazy frog and darius it's always nice to secure a number 1.

We just need a number 1 single now to put those damn demons to bed!!!

"Gennaro Castaldo, of music retailer HMV, said: "Coldplay have sold as many albums in three days as most big artists sell in three months."

HOLY FUCK!:stunned:

Oasis still hold the record then...fucking belting album though, much better than X&Y, Got my copy for Father Day :D

  • 3 weeks later...

A month at Number 1! Yay!

Duffy remains at two with her enduringly popular Rockferry album, while Chris Brown's Exclusive climbs to a new peak of three.

The highest new entry of the week comes from Devon folk singer Seth Lakeman, who enters at eight with his third studio album, Poor Man's Heaven.

thats great probably they sold around 70k this week no?

hope they end the year with more than 1.5 million....but that will be diffcult

Definitely gonna be the biggest album of the year, I think.

Coldplay equal best albums run at one

Coldplay’s Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends makes another big (46.6%) dip in sales but still has enough power to easily chalk up another week at the top of the artist albums chart, with sales of 58,509 being more than its two closest challengers – Duffy’s Rockferry (35,683) and Chris Brown’s Exclusive (18,157) combined.

Viva La Vida has now been number one for four weeks, equalling Coldplay’s personal record, as set by their last album, X&Y. At that stage of its life, X&Y had sold 907,240 copies, while Viva La Vida has sold 668,114 copies.

Folk hero Seth Lakeman’s third album, Poor Man’s Heaven celebrates his coastal, West Country roots, telling stories of greedy pirates, heartbroken sailors and brave lifeboatmen. It debuts this week at number eight on sales of 12,522, easily eclipsing its immediate predecessor, 2006’s Freedom Fields, which reached number 32.

My Chemical Romance’s 2006 album The Black Parade was a huge success for the Californian rockers, reaching number two. Its latest, and as its title suggests last spin-off is the live CD/DVD set, The Black Parade Is Dead, which debuts at number 12 on sales of 11,066.

With the consensus of reviews being that it is heavier and better than their debut, The Subways’ second album, All Or Nothing, was released last Monday and enters at number 17.

Elsewhere, ‘The Glastonbury Effect” helped to boost many albums, including Back To Black: The Deluxe Edition by Amy Winehouse (up 13-7, with sales of 11,602); Vampire Weekend’s self-titled debut (28-16, 9,111 sales); and MGMT’s Oracular Spectaculars (32-19, 8,585 sales).

Glastonbury effect notwithstanding, overall album sales dipped for the third straight week, falling 1.9% to 2,151,901. That is 4.75% below same week 2007 sales of 2,259,234.

In 10 previous visits to the singles chart in the last five years, Dizzee Rascal has never charted higher than number 10, but the 23-year-old debuts at number one with new single Dance Wiv Me, on sales of 49,414 downloads ahead of its physical release today (Monday). Dizzee is well ahead of the rest of new runner-up Ne-Yo, whose Closer dips 1-2 on sales of 29,114.

An English language remake of his 2006 European hit, Vi Sitter I Ventrilo Och Spelar DotA as All I Ever Wanted brings Sweden’s Basshunter his second straight smash here, opening at number three on sales of 26,044.

A fairly wet but successful Glastonbury was given much screen time last weekend, and largely affected the albums chart though it also provided resurgences for singles by Jay-Z, The Verve and Neil Diamond. Jay-Z’s playful set provides him with re-entries for 99 Problems and Linkin Park collaboration Numb/Encore. 99 Problems – number 12 in 2004 as a double-sided single with Dirt Off Your Shoulder – re-enters at number 35 on download sales of 5,038, while Numb/Encore scoots 64-45 (3,701 sales).

But with no good sales... sorry... I am a big Coldplay fan and it doesn't look good at all.

At that stage of its life X&Y had sold 907,240 copies, while Viva La Vida has sold 668,114 copies.

HUGE difference between this 2... and it's very sad and It will never outsell Duffy's album... 300K between them and Duffy are more strong now. very sad. :(

EDIT: they must have realese another video clip... for VLV, this song is huge and only from the album, no promotion and no Video Clip...

I think it will be one of the most successful song of the year and increase the album selling,

and sadly... im not seeing anything like this happening. any NEWS?!

Wait isnt there a thread which says Officially coldplay worlwide something which says it does outsell Duffy already!!! Hmm, I soooo confused???

What is this all about. Does it matter how much sales it has?

VLVODAAHF is just less commercial than X&Y, less straight-forward, more Alternative. So the big crowd like it less. But it's way better than X&Y IMO.

Coldplay "Viva" at No.1 for fifth week

LONDON (Reuters) - Coldplay's "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends" racked up a fifth week as number one album, the Official UK Charts Company said on Sunday.

The year's fastest-selling album with over-the-counter sales of more than 600,000 since its release in June, Coldplay proved too strong for two non-movers -- Welsh singer Duffy's "Rockferry" and R&B singer Chris Brown's "Exclusive".

With Coldplay due to launch their North American tour in Los Angeles on July 14, "Viva La Vida" has also been the number one selling album in 35 other countries around the world.

Elsewhere in the UK album charts, indie duo Ting Tings and "We Started Nothing" climbed two spots to four, new entry Black Kids and "Partie Traumatic" came in five, and Beck's "Modern Guilt" was the top 10's only other new record, entering at nine.

In the singles chart hip-hop star Dizzee Rascal held on to top spot with "Dance wiv Me" as Swedish musician and DJ Basshunter climbed one to two with "All I ever Wanted".

With no new entries in the top 10 of the singles chart, Kid Rock and "All Summer Long" made an impressive showing, zooming up 40 places to six. (Reporting by John Joseph; Editing by Peter Graff)

Haha it's still quite impressive Dave :P

Especially since it's not far off selling as many copies as Duffy's album, which was released three months before VLV

this is no good news cause it's selling very bad in Uk!!

If this reachs 4xplatinum it would be amazing||

and next week duffy will rise to no1 where she will be all summer long

At least you Brits have some sense to not buy into that Lil Wayne shit.
