Is Keane trying to copy Coldplay??

Featured Replies

Ok I couldnt hold back anymore.First off I like Keane's music. Not an obsessed fan like i am towards Colplday but still a fan.Ive check their site periodically as they are in the process of making their new album. They have been giving updates on their progress. But I couldnt help but notice how much it seems to me like they are trying to copy the approach and some things that Coldplay have recently done with Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends. For example,Tom Chaplin has talked about how his voice sounds different on this album. In a video i saw them using a Timpani as Coldplay uses in Viva La Vida(song). In a couple days they are going to give away a new song on their website as a free download. In a recent blog on their site they said they were hypnotized. They call the place they work on their music "The Barn."Coldplays HQ is called "The Bakery."And you could through the approach they are taking with the new album and trying new things on the album as Coldplay did.

These could all be little things but to me it kind of sounds like they might be trying to copy what Coldplay have recetly done.I dont know I could be wrong. Just an observation I have seen.Im not trying to bag them.Just something I have noticed.Has anyone else noticed this??

Oh and there was a comment that Ton Chaplin made that I thought was kind of funny. He said on on their site in a little interview that a lot of big bands were releasing albums right now and that he doesnt think that any of them are going to touch what theyve made.Pretty bold statement. Was this a jab directed to Coldplay??Might be a little too cocky there.

Well I certainly see what you're saying but...

didn't Coldplay's VLV copy Radiohead? Radiohead started the download thing with In Rainbows and Coldplay just copied them with their Violet Hill giveaway. Plus In Rainbows was an artistic experimental album for Radiohead, much like Viva for Coldplay.

It seems like Coldplay copied Radiohead just as much as Keane is copying Coldplay. So I dont think it's anything we havent seen before.

Yea i guess you are right.I guess everyone just copies everyone now a days haha

It's so hard to be original these days, even with the best will in the world.

It's probably coincidence rather than deliberate :)

I think eventually everyone will try out this "free download" idea. Even though it seems it was Radiohead who started it, it gives such an advantage to any band. I think all bands will start giving away select songs as means of attracting new listeners.

Loads of bands did free downloads before Radiohead, it's just they went the whole hog and gave the whole album away...

Keane annoy me. I liked their first album, but I thought the second album wasn't anything really.

Awww come on! I love Under the Iron Sea, it's got so many great songs!!

As for this question, no, I don't think Keane is copying Coldplay.

Well, first off, Keane have had The Barn well before Coldplay ever had The Bakery.

And I would think that new bands always want to try something new on each subsequent album. Let's take Bloc Party's new album for example. Or if you want a historical example, try U2's Pop (though that didn't go over so well, did it?).

And quite honestly, I liked Keane's album updates way more than Coldplay's. While it was always exciting to get a note from the mysterious Prospekt, they were few and far between. Keane had daily updates--pictures, notes from the band, and the always hilarious Tom-filmed Youtube videos.

So, no, I don't think Keane necessarily copied Coldplay. They're just keeping their fans updated in a timely way using the Internet age. Wouldn't you do the same??

keane sucks!!!!!!!!!.

Yer I noticed that about Keane. I've been checking their website often (not as often as I do Coldplay of course) and just some stuff they do looks like theyre looking up to Coldplay as if Coldplay is their older brother.

Especially with the hypnotic thing. I mean, geez, get your own creative ideas. I really like Keane and am looking forward to their album. I think it was a bit cocky though to say that theirs is gonna be better than Coldplay or Radiohead (VLV/In Rainbows)...but good luck to 'em!!

In relation to the difference to the Prospekt entries and the daily photos/blogs/videos of Keane. Both are good, but the rariety of the entries for Coldplay made the whole experience more tense and exciting. Keane was like "O wow. Another picture of a load of wires or a out-of-focus band member...joy". Their blogs got boring and full of pissy, useless information as well, like I don't care about the beers in Berlin, tell me bout the damn album!!

Anyways, I'm also not trying to bag them, like I said, can't wait for the album!

No, they are not copying Coldplay. And so what that Tom said "I don't think they're going to touch what we've made"... by the sound of it, I doubt that any band will actually get close to what Keane have attempted with this album; that's not to say that it's necessarily the best, but then again, there is no 'best' - it's all a matter of opinion. As for the updates, they may have been useless to some people, but I've reallly enjoyed the videos, interviews, clips of songs, blogs and photos.

I'd agree about the sometimes-frivolity of some of the blogs, but Coldplay will never beat Tom Chaplin's video about their search for a Prophet T8 synth in Paris. The "There goes James Blunt's tour bus..." bit alone is priceless.

And if you're clueless as to what I'm referencing, watch and laugh:

Oh, and watch the Snapshots of Tim Rice-Oxley/Richard Hughes ones too. Both brilliant!

Or the "What do you think of..." videos! It's been nice to actually see and hear Tim, Tom and Rich during the process, as opposed to Coldplay going quiet and seemingly disappearing for a couple of years.

In your opinion.

The Barn has been around alot longer than The Bakery. And so what if they are giving away a free download, loads of bands doing that these days! I have had quite a few from various band websites.

I don't think any band deliberately says 'hay, I know lets copy them, after all people are so thick these days they'll hardly notice will they?', Flippin' annoys me something rotten whenever a band does something different to what they usually do and everyone goes on about how they are copying someone else.

Keane is copying Coldplay, maybe subconsciously if they don't admit to it.

Music is still nice though. I am a Keane fan.

I read somewhere their next album will be called "Perfect Symetry", like seriously?: "All I ever wanted to be/living in perfect symmetry/nothing is as down or as up, as us." -Low.

Its a bit harsh to say that Keane is copying Coldplay - i think borrowing is a better word to describe it. Coldplay borrowed Radiohead's idea of the free download and Keane is basically borrowing Coldplay's idea of the updates (and free download of course). Anyway I reckon in the future many more bands will use these ideas such as free downloads, updates and a band hq as it is simply a better way of doing things.

nothing's so original these days... so I don't think they're trying to copy Coldplay

Oh come on, do you seriously think Tim, Tom and Rich (3 grown up, intelligent guys) sat down and actually said "let's copy Coldplay" - as if! The Perfect Symmetry thing - even if they did get inspiration from Low, then so what - Coldplay don't have exclusive ownership of the words 'perfect' and symmetry' do they. And going back to The Barn - do you actually think they thought, "Hey, Coldplay have got this studio called the Bakery, erm, I was thinking we get our own place and gave it a name that begins with B too - nobody will ever notice".

well keane is not copying coldplay because they suck. coldplay is so far away of this shitty band.

LOL, yeah i noticed that too. But seriously, i think it's really unfair to say they're trying to copy Coldplay. I can see the similarities but Keane are their own band with their own sound, they don't need to copy anyone.

Radiohead started the download thing

They didn't start the "pick your own price for the album" thing, Jane Siberry was :P
