October 8, 200817 yr True. At least they're honest about it. He did say during LiJ at the Radio 2 gig that he couldn't be bothered to play it. I don't think it diminishes the performance, I do see why they do it during the big gigs. Is just when they do small gigs/TV shows I'd like to see them be a bit more natural :D Absolutely Mitch. They can play any band off the planet as far as I'm concerned in a small venue. I think it must just be a confidence thing - they want so much to be the biggest and best band in the world, what keeps them going, and what pressure that must be for them. If only they could fully understand that, for so many of us, they took that title long, long ago, and effortlessly too!! The irony is, that if they played some of their songs truly live in this sort of setting - stripped down, casually (with the space to let the songs really breathe), and maybe even acoustic - they'd be far more acclaimed by the critics and the non-coldplayers imho. These guys can really play, and do almost day-in, day-out. Ah well, but I guess their shy, unconfident, side is the very thing that makes all this beautiful music possible in the first place... That said here's an excuse to post a vid of one of my favourite songs ever - Martha's Harbour by All About Eve. This is from the week after they appeared on Top of the Pops live to the British public, and the vocal tape didn't play. The singer couldn't hear what she was miming to properly (even though the viewers could), and spent three or so embarrassed minutes hiding her face from the camera live on national TV :embarassed: It was quite a big thing at the time in England, and they were asked back the next week to make amends. The faux pas video has been removed from Youtube for some reason :dozey: so this is what we're left with. Hope some people enjoy it, it really is a great song ;) [ame=http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3oHTyCrIPnU]http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3oHTyCrIPnU[/ame]
October 8, 200817 yr Can I ask a question??Do other bands use backing tracks like Coldplay does??? ALso when Chris does the Hardest Part on the piano at the concerts,do you think he's really playing it.I absolutely love that version and I would be so disappointed if it was a track..
October 8, 200817 yr no backing tracks on hardest part,Chris is playing it.And i love the version like he played in european tour with only him on piano.
October 8, 200817 yr Guy fans: When you get chance to, you should watch the interview. When Chris mentions that Guy is the reason they're so successful, there's a long close-up on Guy's face.

Hope some people enjoy it, it really is a great song ;) http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=3oHTyCrIPnU Yeah, I guess being the biggest band in the world is a curse, they feel they need to live up to the name (especially Chris). When they played Jools in 2002 it was so incredible and all they did was sit down and play the songs, without the theatrics. Apparently they had balloons and butterflies last night too, during LiJ...there's just absolutely no need when they're playing intimate gigs. With the backing tracks and Chris being facetious at the end of Lost too it just makes them look like a bit of a joke when you put them next to Glen Campbell and Cage the Elephant, which is annoying when you know they're not and are more than capable of playing beautiful live songs. Haha, I broke my promise again. No more moaning. :lipsrsealed2: I guess I was just a little disappointed. P.S. I did enjoy the song, thanks :D
October 8, 200817 yr Yesterday I went to the BBC studios 2 hours before the beginning of the show. I was there with my boyfriend looking for tickets...Nobody had spare tickets so we waited in front of the gates for 2 hours till 8 pm.. Luckily someone didn't show up and a woman from the organization was so kind to give us 2 tickets! Inside the studio it was very strange, there weren't big coldplay fans and we thought we were the only ones interested in coldplay! It was very cool looking at them while the other bands were performing.. Chris clapping hands and moving his head in rhythm with music. They played 4 songs for the Friday show: Violet Hill, Lovers in Japan, 42, Viva la Vida. They played Viva la Vida twice because Chris said he had lost his hearing :D I was in a good position because behind their stage I saw Gwyneth watching them for the whole duration of the show. It was nice to see her singing and dancing during all their songs...during viva la vida she was singing all the Ooooo Oooooo :D Then at 10 pm the live show started and they played Viva la Vida (for the 3rd time!) and Lost! Gwyneth was really enjoying lost! singing out and dancing :) We weren't allowed to take pictures, my boyfriend only managed to take one with his phone: (In this picture Gwyneth is between Guy's head and that white balloon). At the end of the show we could get on their stage and talk with Chris (the others had already left). I was wearing the Viva la Vida shirt and he said "Hey! I like your T-shirt!", we also took a picture together  It was cool looking closely at all their instruments, the piano and the painted drums... wow, it's been a great night! :D
October 8, 200817 yr Oh wow thanks, that sounds brilliant. You should have tickled Chris in that photo and made him smile!

But well congrats for your pic with Chris! and also how come she just come for a small Tv show with them?
October 8, 200817 yr I know, in that picture it's too dark and you can't see Gwyneth. I was just saying where she was during the show. Maybe she just came because they both live in London and because she likes Coldplay :)
October 8, 200817 yr you are one lucky girl. congrats on your hard work to get in there!!! ya just gotta try cause ya never know

Maybe she just came because they both live in London and because she likes Coldplay :) thanks for explaining.:) i just asked that question about her , only because i am surprised. I don't really care whether she came or not so much to think and analyze about it,and to see her in a picture.I am also not a fan of her. I always only look for Coldplay any where. But you're really lucky to take a pic with Chris i am happy for you.:)
October 8, 200817 yr Lucky you!! Thanks for sharing your story (and pic!!!). So you were the only one talking to him afterwards?

October 8, 200817 yr Lucky you!! Thanks for sharing your story (and pic!!!). So you were the only one talking to him afterwards? There were some other guys (just 3-4), most of the the people just went away immediately after the show. Nobody seemed to care that he was still there  lucky me :D
October 8, 200817 yr does anyone else notice that will adjusts his mic during the guitar riff part of lost! while still playing the drums. def not an easy thing to do.

October 8, 200817 yr Congrats Laura :D Great reward after all the efforts to get in :) The cameraman in VLV loved Will but didn't like Guy at all
October 8, 200817 yr Well, fairplay I say. If you're going to blatantly use multiple backing tracks, show some confidence about it! Chris did a similar thing at the June BBC gig when the TV in the background showed him playing the Lovers in Japan keyboard part - that very hand was in fact scrabbling around behind said TV for something! To all those who say 'it diminishes the live performance' I say 'it adds something no other band have done so well since Martha's Harbour on TotP' :D At least they record their own backing tracks! :) The sight of Guy Berryman playing double-bass for the string backing for Viva La Vida is a sight to behold! :)
October 8, 200817 yr Author In a preview for Friday night's show see Coldplay perform 42. http://www.bbc.co.uk/later/
October 8, 200817 yr where can I see the interview ? does anyone know ? :uhoh: Awwwww sweet ! Well done Laura :nice: I'm really really happy for you ! isnt Chris just the nicest guy ever ? :nice: thanks for sharing your story and the Gwyneth moment, that's cute !
October 8, 200817 yr In a preview for Friday night's show see Coldplay perform 42. http://www.bbc.co.uk/later/ It's beautiful as ever, but the BBC appear to have screwed up the mix from Chris' mike during the second part of the vocals..
October 8, 200817 yr It was great, and 'the face that launched a thousand ships' quote, very true!!! I scratched my car on the garage door quite badly as I had to go out last minute before the show started, so I'm blaming Coldplay for that! It would never have happened if they weren't on tv last night!
