Postcards From Far Away project | Previous pre-delivery discussion (thread closed)

For personal delivery, PO Box is the only way to go I think. There will be thousands of postcards, or very many hundreds at the very least. If someone has a business address (their own business, not just a place of work) that would probably work. But there's a lot to sort out if this route's chosen....

I like the PO box idea as well, but I don't think the operational part can <or should> start or be official until we know for sure that we can get a reliable address or delivery place AND someone willing to to the job.

This is all just talk, we should wait until the girls send the letter to Debs. And maybe set up a deadline for a plan B to kick-in in case she doesn't respond???

Awesome logos!!! :nice:

I just hope none of the guys are reading this...

:uhoh:

I think this is what I want to include on my postcard

- title

- template

- logo

- stamp (flag of country)

- location (from far, far away....:D)

- a message ( hahah)

I will only send one cuz im cheap that way:P

(I think im missing something? I dunno... I hadn't sent a postcard for a long time).

I think it's really important to stress that for the Post(wo)man route we all need to feel confident that we have someone who's 99.99% sure they can deliver (shit happens, and we need to understand that, but at the same time they have to be as close to certain as possible that the plan's foolproof). Whoever it is needs to consider all the factors at this time of year (work will probably be crazy busy, office parties, preparations for Xmas etc).

A back-up's always a good idea for something that has the hopes of so many resting on it, too.

If I can find out how to sort out a temporary PO Box, then I can defo do it. As I said last night, I can go to London at the beginning of December. Someone also mentioned passing them to someone at a concert - I'm going to the Liverpool gig, so that would be totally easy to do.

I love the logos everyone. Especially the butterflies. As for the PO box idea, its probably the biggest advancement we've have in the last 24hours so now we need to get that set up. Are we getting busybeeburns to make an annoucement on the site? I can't wait till this becomes opperational.

First, we check the mailing situation for the Bakery (I will on Friday, if people don't report before).

Second, (Guru) Lore and Chelsea will email Debs, saying that we need to deliver these postcards en masse to the band in the first half of December, how can we do that (delivery to the Bakery through the door/crew member at a gig or outside the Bakery/standard EMI address?).

Third, we tell Debs the EMI address is no good, because we're not sure the band will get them before Christmas (if that's the reply she gives).

Fourth (got confused now...anyone help me out?:laugh3:)

Ok, I PM'd Lore to let her know officially that I'll deliver if we can gather them all together. I have to sign off now because I am very sleep deprived (this board is just addictive!!!:laugh3:)

Let me know if I can be of service to the mighty Coldplayers :D

^^^ OMG!!!! Your awesome!!!!

We're finally getting somewhere!!!!

***hoping Debs responds soon***

Excellent idea, Pete! The PO box seems to be a great solution to one of our biggest problems! I still vote for Ian and Jen to deliver the postcards when they go to Coldplay's gig, as long as we can arrange things in advance with Debs (meaning that someone from the crew will be waiting for the box in the venue).

I also vote for Ian and Jen to be the ones to deliver (if they're willing, that is).

The PO box idea is definitely good, as long as we decide on a personal delivery. Although I guess we could still use a PO box somehow- maybe coordinate a PO box in London where we all send the letters, and a crew member/Debs can just pick it up from there? That would solve the "no letterbox/address" problem, I suppose, if it turns out there isn't one...

EDIT: Actually, that would also solve the problem of having to leave the box out in the rain for someone to pick up... They would all be safe in the PO box :) So if someone Coldplay-connected agrees to pick up somewhere, this is definitely our best bet.

K so I get that I can join...but what Im wondering is... are we all doing this at the same time? Where are we sending them to? Im just a little confused about the basis of this project...it would be great if someone could let me know.... Thanks!!

^^^All those things are to be decided!!!!

We haven't really started anything yet. We're just speculating....... ;)

1) Yes, we're trying to coordinate this so that they all arrive at basically the same time. Once we figure that out, we'll give people dates for when they should send their postcards.

2) We're still trying to work out where we're going to be sending the postcards, but we'll keep you updated on that.

The first post has some rules/basic info :)

Thanks Cris :) Another vote for Coldplaying's own Ian and Jen from here as first choice! (Although we have to remember it's a big - no HUGE - burden for anyone to do this, and we'd certainly be putting them on the spot with this at such a busy time of year (see my earlier concerns)- perhaps Lore could liaise with them and just let us know if they can or can't do it??!

We're all very thankful for the offer RedGirl

A PO Box is linked to a personal or business address, and is based at the nearest sorting station/mail depot to that address. So you can't set one up anywhere - it has to be near your own base. It would only work if someone lived right near the Bakery. And can we please stop talking about leaving the box of postcards out in the rain? THAT IS NOT AN OPTION AND WAS RULED OUT PAGES AND PAGES AGO :D

The final planning, and instructions to everyone, will hopefully be finalised by early next week. Until then start thinking about designing your postcard!!

Yes, I know how PO boxes work. We have plenty of Coldplayers in London, I bet we can find one nice enough to help us out! If the project is big enough, perhaps someone on Coldplay staff would be willing to go to a post office a couple of Tube stops away to pick up (if it's truly impossible for a Coldplayer to drop off somewhere, be it a gig or the Bakery).

And believe me, I know that's not an option, I've been here the whole time! :P I was just showing how many issues a PO box could potentially solve.

EDIT: And by "coordinate a PO box in London", I meant create one working with Debs/someone else. It doesn't necessarily have to be a Coldplayer's address. That way Debs wouldn't need to give us the Bakery address, and we'd still have a place to send the postcards.

^ Hey....sorry to be the little annoying girl who asks all the obvious questions....but how are all of you guys making your postcards...I just would like to know so that I could make an amazing one!! :D

Daniel that is sooooo pretty!!!!!!!!! :nice:

ooooh, thanks redgirl!! :D that's fabulous.

i think PO box is the way to go, since this really will be hundreds of cards, no doubt :D

(oooh, i love thinking of how many it will be!)

just for the record, i still don't like the idea of passing off the cards at a concert. not only can that get really iffy in terms of planning, but it's also relying on other people. i think we should be as self-sufficient as possible and not put our burden on anyone else, since this is FOR them. i think the entire project will be even MORE impressive to the guys if we do it entirely on our own, only relying on each other and the international postal service.

in terms of making the cards, i plan to make ones in photoshop. actually, one of them i have already made, i think: it was one of my sigs ages ago. i can't really find connecticut postcards easily, so i'll be making both of mine. i just have a hard time thinking of what exactly to WRITE on it--i don't want it to be cliche and mushy. both of which i'm good at doing.

and it's already been said, but i (and everyone else that's been integral in planning) PROMISE PROMISE PROMISE that once things are decided, you'll DEFINITELY know! :D believe me, i'm very big on clearly presenting information, and i've been adding to a MSword document with all the tentative rules and guidelines that i'll keep editing and will post in its own thread once things are officially decided.

so, just be patient and don't worry

We could send them postcards with our phone #s on them saying "call me" xD

I'll be at the Bakery on Friday, and will be able to confirm if they can receive post there and (possibly) the postal address (that's if someone else who's already been there won't confirm for us sooner than that - and plenty of people have been so I don't see why not).

If it is decided that all the postcards will be sent to a reliable and willing 'Post(wo)man' in London/the UK to be delivered all together, then there's one more very important point to consider. That is, unless that person has their own business address, there will be probably thousands of postcards/letters (with the two postcards in) arriving within a few weeks at somebody's home. It just isn't practical I don't think (and quite honestly it's very risky (Lhunacy??) to give thousands of people around the world your home address anyway, no matter how wonderful almost all of them are).

SO. The answer is for that person in the UK to get a PO Box just for the postcards. Their normal mail would be delivered to their home, and the 'good stuff' gets delivered to a private box at the nearest postal exchange. It takes ten days to set up, and costs just under £50 for six months, or £60 for the year (probably not needed).

If this was the case then I'd suggest very small donations via Paypal to cover the cost of the PO Box for the person who is kind enough to put in so much effort for Coldplayers all around the world. It would only need 100 donations of £0.50 (US $1) to pay for.

There would also be the added benefit of calling the PO Box 'From Far Away' or something like that (one of the the few compulsory things on the card could be From: Far Away, PO Box xxx') Wouldn't it be cool if even a little letter or thank you was sent back to that mysterious address by someone connected to the band, to be shared back with everyone??!

All this assumes we can find that one person in the UK to make this great effort for everyone....

as I replied to Alison, the PO box idea is really good... but we'd need money... in my case, I don't have a credit cards, but still got like 2 dollars in my old paypal account :P

Hello

Here comes my logo.

Its handmade, and it needs photoshop now. Its made with black ink. Whats your opinion?

(Argh..., I have to find and install photoshop now....) :P

^ooh! i love it!! i love that it's hand-drawn :nice:

i made two rought drafts of potential ones today while procrastinating...finally worked out how to do the circles :P

vivastampcopyzz7.jpg

they still need technical tweaking, and the background colors don't mean anything. but there you go :P

I liked all the logos a lot :D

very good point; i was thinking a bit about this too. as much as i'd be willing to do it if i was over there, i wouldn't give out my home address online. i love the idea of a temporary PO box and a fund to help get it set up! or perhaps the person will have a viable business address or something too...we'll have to see (did redgirl76 tentatively volunteer, or am i making that up?)

i think we'll have more answers by next week at any rate.

yeah she's our volunteer #1 :P

I think that it might be hard for them to give them the postcards at a concert... and also they're not from London... but if the could give them the postcards in anyway would be awesome..

This is my Logo:

I love it :D

the probably would take too much time reading everyone's postcard so I don't think they'll be able to call any of us :P

Yea I was kidding x3 but i like this idea

would be awesome but it's not gonna happen :P

girl offtopic comment: nice siggy :P

So many logos! I think I'm just going to have to close my eyes and choose, they're all so great :P

for right now, this is what i'm thinking the plans should be.

PLAN A) mail all postcards to RedGirl76's future PO box by a certain date. she will then drop off the [hundreds] of cards on a predetermined date to the postbox (which we assume exists) at the bakery, and voila

in the event that a postbox at the bakery which would protect the cards from the elements doesn't exist...

PLAN B) mail all postcards to either the EMI address (which works), or any possible address that debs gives us. it's less cool than getting them all at one time, but it's safe and ensures delivery, which is the key.

personally, i don't *really* think the "drop them off at a gig" plan should even really be on the table, but that's just me. i just think it's WAY too easy to mess up and have all our efforts go to waste. it also requires our trust in a middleman, which i don't think is wise (or as cool).

EDIT: dude, somewhere in this thread, i broke 5000 posts :P
