Biggest bands getting bigger as they Twitter

 

Back on Feb. 26, Coldplay fans all over the world followed what was happening at the Brit Awards in real time thanks to Twitter. Every few minutes, someone from the band squirted out a new sub-140 character message to Coldplay fans, who received them on their computers and smart phones. The effect was like an abbreviated play-by-play of the event. Or even private diary thoughts being shared with a select group of people.

 

After lingering in the shadow of Facebook and MySpace, Twitter has emerged as the communication phenomenon of 2009. It combines the brevity of text messaging with the hyperlinking that makes blogs so useful. It’s also a fast and free way for anyone who needs to reach an audience in a fairly intimate way.

 

I’m getting tweets from Coldplay, Muse, Weezer, Bjork, Oasis and Pearl Jam. I keep up to date with gossipy U2 fans, record labels with news to spread and music geeks who link to unusual websites. I’m getting my news faster than ever before — which I think is a good thing. I think.

 

As a broadcaster with two national radio shows and a music website with international reach, Twitter allows me to keep people up to date on what I’m doing, what I can offer them and how they can participate in stuff that I’ve got coming up. As I write this, 1,215 people have subscribed to the posts of alancross. Cool!

 

For example, before I interviewed Iggy Pop and Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode last week, I tweeted my followers (That’s what you call people who subscribe to your Twitter posts. How … messianic.) that if they had any questions for these two guys that they should message me back and I would ask them on their behalf.

 

The response was staggering. The questions I got from the audience were more heartfelt and honest that anything I could have come up with — and it showed in the answers I got from Iggy and Dave. I’m now amassing questions for my Green Day interview next month.

 

Might Twitter be here to stay? Or is it another techno-fad doomed to burn out? And this concerns me: On March 3, Twitter went down when the women on The View showed their audience how to use it.

 

Whoopi on Twitter? That’s as bad as finding my mom on Facebook.
