U2 singer Bono apologises after foul-mouthed insult of Coldplay's Chris Martin

Featured Replies

I'm sure he can, but you're arguing with anything anyone says on the subject for the sake of it.

You think he was out of order, fine. But let the people who don't have their say too, without relentlessly telling them that they're wrong. Let it go.

I wasn't the one that started getting rude and personal.

It should be possible to slag off Bono without that happening. Otherwise it will be required to restrict everyone to one comment each on a topic, which is unworkable IMO.

Do you have the link, did not liked to read the whole thread, so I post it:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiTykAM1gl8]YouTube - Chris Martin Is A Wanker Says U2 Bono Live On Radio 1 With Jo Whiley! (Jokingly)[/ame]

I'm speechless about this. I always thought Bono had a brain in his head but I was so wrong with it :D . Honestly I must admit I don't know him very well and don't give much for U2 but I always appreciate his charity work and his music.

The funny thing is that we already had the discussion a few days ago about the rivalry between the two bands. You could assume that Bono has read that and wanted to foment it :D. I do not have the clue about Bono's motives, maybe he is just pissed off hearing about Coldplay, but I do not think he is jealous.

My interpretation: The w- word could be a joke, not a very funny one indeed. To say something against this theory you can hear that the other insults came so quickly and in an annoyed tone that you cannot think of a joke anymore. It just does not sound like fun. I did not even know the word cretin and had to look it up - so Bono thx I've learned a new word :laugh3: . And how does he know that Chris has a dysfunctional character, were they ever so close to each other?

Bono is immature although he is so old, that must be kind of embarassing for him so he has to insult other genius people to feel better.

Precisely. Somebody of his status/standing/seniority in the industry should show a bit more restraint and decorum, whether he was joking or not. He shouldn't need to use language like that in public. It does nothing for his credibility whatsoever.;)

I do think he somehow feels a bit "threatened", as U2 are on the wane, whilst Coldplay are going in the opposite direction.

"Elevation" and "Beautiful Day" were probably the last memorable tunes they produced, and that was already some years ago!!

I didn't manage to listen to this part of the live broadcast yesterday but I have to say that Bono really should know better, even if he was making a joke regarding Chris's media status as a w***** Having listened to it now I have to say that when I read what was said in the article at the start of this thread it sounded far worse - the way Bono says Chris is a lyrical genius but no doubt a 'w' is definitely jokey in tone. I was worried it sounded like he was making a serious statement - but he was trying to be funny, albeit in his own slightly-arrogant Bono way :P Jo Whiley didn't sound seriously offended when she asked him to say sorry and I thought she handled the situation very well. Bono kind of laughed anxiously when he realized he'd sworn on live day time radio. He's not the first to do such a thing. I have nothing wrong with that kind of language in the right time and place... and c'mon, Chris himself has quite a foul mouth, I think we all know that. :laugh3: However I do agree with mc_squared: when Jo failed to make Bono actually properly apoligize with the word sorry, I did think his "cretin" comment was unnecessary. Again, it was said in a jokey context but it's not the type of word anyone should use on radio especially someone of Bono's status, maturity and age, though. He should know of the nature of that word. It has a pretty offensive and abusive original meaning to it in it's old world context. He might aswell have called Chris a retard, and that wouldn't have been acceptable on broadcasting. Again Jo said sorry for any offensive caused, in a pretty lighthearted way, so it was all in good spirit.

I think that I can forgive him though since he did backtrack on his comments by saying something genuninely nice about the band and Chris: 'I think they are a great band and actually, it turns out he’s a great soul as well. 'Sorry about that. I was just joking entirely.' I doubt Chris really was offended. And I think Bono may have realized he made a slight fool of himself so. ;) Looks like Bono's feeling seriously threatened by Coldplay these days, huh? :smug:

What a drama about nothing...jesus.

They can call me a wanker any day if that means I am a genius!!!

I doubt that Chris or Bono so to speak care...

But Bono gave both bands loots of pubilicty as it is in the papers today!!!

So, everybody happy!

Hahahaha Mark swearing is not a mark of maturity, it's a mark of being human.

I like U2, I really do. I'm 17, and my dad is in love with U2, some of my fondest childhood memories include U2 playing in the background. I'm also huge (admittedly bigger) coldplay fan... But here is my take on it:

I agree with the people that say that Coldplay and U2 can't be compared. Coldplay is relativly much younger than U2, and has less experience.

That being said, Chris Martin has had nothing but good comments towards U2. In a recent interview with 60 Minutes, he said "[The only reason Coldplay is so popular right now] is because U2 is still on holiday. Once they come back [we're in trouble]." Personally I think Bono needs to realize that Chris Martin has tremendous respect for Bono, and Bono needs to recognize the respect and return the love.

I'll step off of my soap box now... haha.

OK stupid question: what is a wanker?? As a non native English I don't understand that word

I hate to break it to all you Coldplay lovers out there that U2 are not done. Wait to see all the albums that sell next week....and wait till you guys see a massive world tour sell out.

not everything is about sales... cuz if it was, Lil Wayne would be the best musician.

OK stupid question: what is a wanker?? As a non native English I don't understand that word

someone who...pleases himself.

Oh, ok :D

Didn't see that one coming  Thought it meant something like a nerd or something.

Sounds like a joke from Bono there guys, just not a well delivered one. He also gives Chris a big complement.

that's why Bono permanently wears glasses!

that's why Bono permanently wears glasses!

:surprised:

LOL, yeah Bono did not sound hateful or anything when he said it, I think he was just joking.

that's why Bono permanently wears glasses!

:stunned:

eww!!

:laugh3::laugh3::laugh3:

If LP5 is as good as the Joshua Tree I tattoo myself with the album cover.

:shocked2:

Sounds like a bet. And where will you be getting the tattoo, hmm? Somewhere visible for during the concert, naturally :P

(I wish I had something funny to say but I'm all drained out by listening to the actual interview. Poor Jo Whiley, still though she put him in his place and kept things moving along nicely!)

And ApproximatelyInfinite and iriden, thank you for putting up with my ways. Guess I'll have to become a "reformed character" - now where have I heard that recently...?:inquisitive:

As far as I'm aware, not in interviews, no.:smug:

What he says in private or among friends is a completely different matter.;)

True a music video is pretty private.;)

I don't even know why this is brought up, Bono was joking. Is Wanker really that bad of a term in the U.K.?
