The U2 frontman also branded him “a cretin” and “dysfunctional” during a bizarre outburst.

 

Shocked DJ JO WHILEY asked the Sunday Bloody Sunday singer to apologise — and said sorry herself.

 

The Irish rocker, 48, blamed his language on it being “early” — even though it was nearly noon.

 

The shocking slip came when Bono and the band went on Live Lounge to chat between songs — and perform some of their own.

 

After playing Coldplay’s 2008 hit Viva La Vida, Jo, 43, reminded Bono he recently rated Chris, 31, alongside PAUL MCCARTNEY.

 

He then apologised, when asked, for swearing.

 

But he giggled: “Obviously he is a completely dysfunctional character and a cretin but he happens to be a genius melodist.”

 

The BBC last night apologised “for any offence caused”.

He called him a wanker, it was obviously a joke since they actually have a lot of respect for each other.

 

And you know what he probably IS a wanker, as is Bono, no frontman of a band (especially one of a huge band) is an easy going person. They're both neurotic and narcissistic and paranoid and egotistical because you have to be to front a huge band. Period.

Steven Tyler is a wanker too, but excellent frontman.

Bono is right Chris can be a bit of a wanker. He does come across in interviews not very well sometimes epecially walking out of one last year. Together with this saying he had a shite night at the brits.....does it matter when you've had the biggest selling album of 2008 Chris?

Right. After Radiohead, Coldplay are my favourite band and I reckon in the next couple of years U2 will be no longer the biggest band in the world. But at the end of the day who cares. It's about the music.

 

I like U2's new album but I prefer the Viva sessions. U2's last album sold 9million and I have a feeling the new one will sell just under Viva. So that would make Coldplay the biggest band no?? Maybe ;)

mark, go listen to the interview in its context. if you can't see that bono was joking, meant it as endearment, then you've got people issues. if you're objecting to the fact that he simply used foul language in his endearment, then you should just wear earmuffs for the rest of your life, because people swear and use vulgarities.

 

chris swears all the time. he's done it in interviews too. not often, of course, but neither has bono. i, personally, am 200% convinced bono meant it as a JOKE. i don't think he was insulting chris's music or talent or personality, he was making a joke with a bad word. when chris hears this in context, i bet he'll laugh. i wouldn't even be surprised if it was some sort of in-joke or something that bono let slip out. if i were a celebrity, i think i'd sometimes forget when i was being professionally interviewed and when i was just talking to a friend, especially when it was someone like jo whiley, and i'd let something like that slip, and in retrospect see it was something i shouldn't have said on air both for propriety's sake and for the sake of all the naive little fans online who would take what i said seriously and forever hate me and my music for it :dozey:.
