Coldplay's music makes you dumb?

Featured Replies

YOUR taste in music reflects your intelligence - and Beyonce fans are among the most stupid, it was claimed today. Devotees of the Destiny's Child star came close to the bottom of the pile in a student's comparison between exam results and musical tastes.

But they are not the worst of the worst - unless they are also fans of rapper Lil' Wayne - because his followers are deemed the least intelligent.

Devotees of Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z also ranked low in the scale, it was claimed.

They are among the findings of the probe by Virgil Griffiths, a PhD student in America, who puts Beethoven listeners as far and away the smartest.

Intelligent

Griffith compared students' scores in SAT exams with their favourite music acts and genres by analysing data on social networking sites.

Those who prefer Indie music are most intelligent, while gospel, pop and rock fans were all ranked at the lower end of the scale.

Fans of legendary acts like Queen, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Sinatra and Bob Marley are all around average and above when it comes to brains, according to Griffith's graph.

And Radiohead, U2 and Bob Dylan count some of the more intelligent people among their fans.

Those who are mad about pop music did not fare well in the analysis.

As well as Beyonce, fans of Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z both ranked at the bottom of the scale.

Their supporters all got below 1,000 in SAT scores, with the average being a mark of 1071 out of 1600. Fans of composer Beethoven were way ahead of the rest with a score of more than 1300.

British bands Coldplay, Muse and Oasis all came in dead central in the "Music that makes you dumb" graph.

On his website, of the same name, Griffith describes the results of his study as "hilarity incarnate".

He introduces the test by saying: "I've listened to artists who after listening to I thought to myself 'Wow... loving this rubbish says a lot about someone and how much they got going on in their head'.

 This is the stupidest thing I have ever read.

Balderdash. I have been making straight A's taking advanced/AP courses my entire life, have a 4.0 GPA while I'm taking AP, college-level classes (I'm a freshman in high school) and in addition to this, am also very smart in non-school disciplines. (See, there are some people who get good grades and still manage do be pretty stupid generally... anyway, I don't mean to brag, I'm just saying.) While I have to say that high school is not exactly the best judge of intelligence, I'm a smart person. And if it sounds like I'm bragging, I'm really not. Usually if I ever act stupid it's because I intend to for whatever reasons.

Additionally my father worked at the National Institutes of Health for about ten years and is very intelligent even though he's also getting kind of old and therefore kind of stupid. But he still knows... lots and lots and lots, especially about math/science. And he likes Coldplay also.

Then again we could just be anomolies. Also I also like Bob Dylan, who's supposed to be for smart people, so that might have something to do with it.

That test is the stupidest thing i have ever read. Music is a matter of taste and opinion not how smart you are.

I think that's way off!

But I can't say anything more without bragging about my excellent grades in school and my perceptive thought process. :P

Seriously though, who here would say "yap Coldplay sure duz mak u teh stoopidz, naow i no y my gradez nd all dat shit iz so bad"?

They must be having "A Rush of blood to the Head" this was studied and published by a wanker:whatever:

yep that test was done by an asshole because if I'm dumb.... then how in the world did i get 3 honours degrees both under and postgrad..................that article was written by a fucken dumbass

Bogus. I'm doing better than average in school so I don't believe that makes me dumb. :dozey:

Is this supposed to be science?! :stunned:

This might actually be the most ridiculous thing I've ever read!

Agreed.

While I love Beethoven and his works, I have to play his music all the time and it sort of becomes a chore for me, so that why I listen to Coldplay.

Haha. All of this "smart people listen to this music," "dumb people listen to that music" is total bullshit.

What if I listen to Coldplay AND Radiohead? I don't listen to much Beethoven currently, but recently I was considering listening to more of his work. I do have much admiration and respect for him.

I am yet to meet a Lil Wayne Fan(and he's pupular around here) that has a GPA over 85(we do it out of 100). And I am a huge Coldplay fan and have a GPA of 94.6(with AP + honors classes). So it's not all wrong, but not all right either.

If according to this we're dumb....

Hanna Montana fans are beyond dumb or maybe tasteless?

I didn't expect U2 fans to be considered particularly smart. That was a little surprising for me.

That's true. How people who listen to this new mainstream garbage like "Lady Gaga" and "Katy Perry"?

Hmmm... this test sounds like a huge pile of smelly stinky shit. Squish squish pfft.

Im a uni grad (not that impressive but I dont think it puts me in the stupidest people alive category) and although I did fuck up my 2nd and 3rd years when I was feeling a bit confused about what direction I was taking in life and suffering a bit of depression, when I got my act together for my 4th year courses I got an average mark of 90% for those courses because I put in an ounce of effort and showed up to class... Im not the smartest cookie for believing that my grades didnt matter and allowing a bit of depression to affect my performance at school but I don't appreciate being ranked among the "dumbest" just because I like Coldplay. Complete bullshit.

Another reason one cannot make a generalization such as this one is because many, many different types of people listen to Coldplay. This would include both intelligent people and... less intelligent people. I know this is about the majority, but even so, my point is still valid.

Exactly. You could very easily be fan of both Beethoven and Lil Wayne, what does that mean?

Stupidly genius? Brilliantly idiotic?
