manofkent Posted March 19, 2009 Share Posted March 19, 2009 I am new to this forum and joined to rave about seeing them live in Sydney on March 15th. Iv'e gone from just liking them to a massive fan. They even come close to my all time favourite band oasis, Yes I was guilty of underestimating them but I now think they are hugely under estimated, I have all four albums (all brought when they came out so I brought Parachutes in 2000) but X&Y is still my favourite. I do get the feeling though, that it is regarded by the hard core fans as a blip on their copy book. I read descriptions like over produced, pop music, contrived not the coldplay sound et etc etc. But sorry I just love this album, it is up there with my favourites by any group, oasis, radiohead, U2, included. How can you not like it, I really don't understand. There is not one dud track on it. Then there are the epics: The Hardest Part (sublime) Fix You (that song builds so brilliantly) Speed Of Sound ( That drum break gets me every time) I love LOVE LOVE X&Y. I know I will be frowned upon by the coldplay purists for liking this album but I really don't understand why, I'm not trying to be provocitive here. To me if their albums were like paintings Parachutes and Rush of Blood would be delicate water colours whereas X&Y is a bold vividly coloured modern art piece in thick deep acrylics. Viva is a mixture. So for me I would rate them X&Y VLV ( Those epic stadium songs LIJ, Lost incredible) Parachutes = Rush of Blood I like my music epic and big sounding which may explain why I love X&Y so much. I still love the other albums though, don't get me wrong. I can't think of another band who has delivered 4 consecutive near flawless albums. Ps I put this thread in as I can't find any threads on X&Y- there appears to be some attempt to bury this album as if it never happened. BUT WHY, people it is amazing!! Don't get me wrong, I totally love Rush of Blood to the Head, Viva La Vida, and Parachutes. But X & Y was the album that had melodies and lyrics that I could really easily connect to and relate to compared to the other albums. Although, musically, I would say AROBTTH was better. :) I think each album has its own strength and weakness, but I'll always remember X&Y as the album that really got me into Coldplay. I always stick up for x&y (and I consider myself pretty hard-core) I think it was a much stronger, more powerful album than the previous two...and yeah, it seems more commercial and 'mainstream', but so what? All four albums have a different feel - personally, I couldn't rank one above the others cos I'd only change my mind two minutes later :lol: There is not one dud track on it. I would hate to see this classic fall out favor with the coldplay faithful! I think the back-to-back blockbusters of Fix You and Talk alone make this an album for the ages. An often neglected aspect of the album is the drumming. It has a very distinct sound which is lovely and sophisticated. I would disagree that there are no dud tracks, though. Corkus Posted March 21, 2009 Share Posted March 21, 2009 It took me a while to get into music in general, but once I did, X&Y was the first CD I ever bought. It's a great peaceful CD with some great anthems. In retrospect, a few songs feel like filler (even Chris has said they stuffed too much onto one album), but this CD still continues to get infinite replay from me. Heck, Speed of Sound was the song that got me into Coldplay in the first place (through which I discovered past brilliance like Clocks and Politik). Probably my favourite tracks would have to be Twisted Logic and Low - both of which I find myself listening to a couple of times before letting the album play on. I was 14, but still pretty young music-wise so I added it to a playlist I was making. That year I noticed X&Y in my brothers C.D. case so he let me borrow it while I went to a camp up in Connecticut. During that time I just fell in the love with the whole album. It was so new, vibrant and exciting to me (this was the first coldplay album I got, before that it was a bunch of miscellaneous tracks and some green day...). What was kind of funny is because X&Y is all I had heard from Coldplay, i thought they were a type of electronica band before I realized they were more alternative rock. During the Rugby World Cup, which was held in Australia that year, all the Aussie ads on Channel 7 featured 'Clocks.' A few months later, I found AROBTTH on Cassette Tape at a servo during a family holiday. :D I bought it, and listened to it non stop on my Walkman that trip. :P Am I the only one who's noticed that every servo IN AUSTRALIA seems to have X&Y on CD? I already had Parachutes and AROBTTH when the latter was released....so I was ready for a new album, and I just really loved the new "feel" of the X&Y album. I still have to rank Viva La Vida above it, but it comes in 2nd for me. A lot of folks around here prefer AROBTTH as their best album, but for me, there are quite a few songs on there that don't really strike my fancy (A Whisper, God Put a Smile on your Face, A Warning Sign). But I recognized Fix You from the trailer for "World Trade Center" and I was like "that's a Coldplay song??" So then I listened a few more times. Speed of Sound is the song that made me a Coldplay fan (I knew it for some years, but I didn't know the name or the band, then one day my father made me download X&Y), I'll be always grateful for this song.
