Ban the (total head-covering) burkha??

Featured Replies

Time will tell who wins and loses. And if the burkha is banned it'll be time to break out the champagne.:D

I don't mind if I'll lose in future because I've done all that I could do.

I don't even care if I lose right now, because I'm sure, God knows who's the winner, and who's the loser.

Thanks for this awesome discussion, Mark. Have a great day.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I imagine there are different ways of interpreting the Koran. Tradition might be an important factor too which would explain why very few Turkish women wear a burkha. Either way, it doesn't explain why it should be banned.

Doesn't explain why any self-respecting, emancipated woman would want to be seen dead in one, either.;)

Are you in Turkey? If so, how come?

Anyway, as far as I've heard, Turkey is a very moderate country, so I'm not surprised at all.;)

I'm studying there. An interesting choice, i know.

And women who are forced to wear those monstrosities are most definitely the losers.;)

Which city, and why??

Because THEY believe it's the right thing to do. It might be hard for us to understand why somebody would want to wear it but who are we to say they shouldn't? They'd probably say similar things about the way European women dress.

After reading some of the posts, the wording the sticks out is "the western world" and right there is the problem. There is this common belief that everyone has to be like us (the Westen World). They have to act like us, dress like us, think like us, and so on, and that is simply not possible. Whether we like or dislike what some cultures do, it is not our right to tell them how to live even if they live in our country because it's a cultural thing. For something to change it has to change within the culture and that normally takes time, a lot of time.

I wish people stop associating all of this with Islam because it really is a cultural thing. Yes, the women who wear burqkas are Muslim, it is their cultural practices that really is the issue, though people really want to blame it on the religion, which some do use religion as the excuse but that exists within all religions.

I don't condone the wearing of burkhas, but if they want to wear them, just let them wear them, if they don't want to, they don't have to. You shouldn't force the women NOT to wear them, that's just as bad as forcing them TO wear them and is outright contradictory to your point.

Exactly what I think.

More like their husband "owners" do.;)

Well if they happen to be in Europe, they'll just have to learn to live with it, as it's the "norm".;)

 It's just a random choice.

Nobody is blaming this on the religion. It's down to "dark age", mysoginistic mentalities which have no place in the 21st century whatsoever.;)

Did you stick a pin in an atlas or something?? In which case, what would have happened if the pin had landed in Iraq, Iran or North Korea??:stunned:

Don't even think about it. :stunned:

Not necessarily. I don't know anyone who wears a burkha but I know two young women who chose to wear a headscarf. Neither of them is married.

True. It's a matter of opinion what 'self-respecting' means. I'm not saying I like the idea of a burkha but I think it's quite arrogant to think you do those women a favour if you ban the burkha. I basically agree with what tracylynn said on the subject.

Doesn't say anything about being covered from head to toe.;)

It's better if they do. :)

As I said previously, headscarves are a completely different matter. They're not in any way extreme, and don't cover the whole face. Many non-Muslims wear headscarves too.

Well she makes some good points and isn't setting out to be confrontational or inciteful like certain others, so it's fine.;)

That's only an interpretation or an opinion, not a hard and fast rule.

Anyway, I still wouldn't be convinced as to its validity, as ALL holy books (including the Bible) were written by men. So there lies the problem......................

Plus if you genuinely believe that, it's very sad.;)

It's better if they do. :)

Huh?

I'm having trouble deciding whether he's being totally serious.;)

I can't believe that any right-minded individual could seriously believe it's better for women to be totally covered from head to toe. :dozey:

In that case I'm going to start the official "T-shirt" religion which requires followers to wear only short-sleeved shirts. Long-sleeved shirts are considered to be offensive and are therefore unacceptable. Anyone care to join??

Well fortunately the Iranian youth are rebelling against the draconian fundamentalist laws there, so maybe the burqa will eventually be consigned to the "anals" of dark-age history, where it belongs.:smug:

I realize this post is about five million pages back but I would just like to say that you should not be talking about anuses Mark :whip:

Perhaps you mean annals?...................................... ROLLLLEYES

Nope. I meant it as I said it, hence the inverted commas.:smug:
