There isn't. They suggest that there's 'no need' to to wear it because Britain's a fairly cold country anyway. Seriously who cares? No one complains about people wearing little clothing in winter either.

It's political in Saudi too Lizzie. The women hate wearing the burqa. I don't accept that Muslim women in Britain are wearing the Hijab, (or its more extreme form the burqa, or even the ultimate expression of purdah, the full Afghan chadir - shuttle-cock burka - were even their eyes are covered - I've seen it recently down Kilburn High Road) because they want to. (Why do the overwhelming majority of their men wear western dress?) The women don't have a choice. Purdah was invented by men to repress women. Rulers dressed their (many) wives up in this garb to hide them from the lecherous eyes of other men. What rulers do ordinary folk copy, if they can afford to; eventually such customs get enshrined in religion and politics as control mechanisms. To my eyes purdah is a symbol of oppression, and slavery. It is a manifestation one human's power over another; In this case the power of Muslin men over Muslim women. It says "women are less than men, they are objects for the pleasure of men". Purdah denies Muslim women personal, social, political and economic freedom. Some will even speak out to say "this our choice". I don't buy that, just like those women in Saudi don't buy it. Purdah breeds the mentality that allows the State to order its snipers to target women in crowds of demonstrators and shoot them through the heart - to teach them a lesson.

 

When I see a woman in the street in purdah try as I may I can't see her as a human - just a thing. And I say to myself "my God so this is what we have come to, Medieval Islam in twenty-first century Britain. What next?"

That happened and it turned into a discussion about the correct word for the "Koran" when you used a version which isn't the English or the Arabic version and couldn't really justify a reason for doing so.
