I like how it's a change from the 'break up' and 'love pains' themes that was evident in most of the songs in A Rush of Blood era. Also, I heard it's about Chris's daughter, Apple. Both are pretty decent lyrically (though What If does indeed have cheesy parts), but The Scientist is much better musically. The Scientist is one of those songs that sends shivers up my spine, like Fix You, like A Message, like Green Eyes.
