Coldplay should ditch Eno.

Featured Replies

I think Viva La Vida is their best album yet.

The only problem that Eno brought along with him on this album was the U2 sound... which isn't to say that Coldplay weren't beginning to sound like U2 already, Johnny Buckland did emulate The Edge on X&Y in quite a few places, but this was the album that should have just gotten rid of the Radiohead and Travis comparisons, which it did somewhat successfully, but it brought along with it the U2 comparisons..

Their next album is gonna HAVE to be a groundbreaking album. It's gonna have to break new ground, kinda like how Radiohead broke new ground with OK Computer. Coldplay needs to prove the critics wrong and turn into an influential and important band that is vital to the music industry.

If they manage to do that, that "best band in the world today" moniker should easily be bestowed upon them by the masses, including the critics.

DITCH ENO! ARE YOU MAD?! Eno's only just begun weaving his magic with Coldplay. Eno's first record with U2 was The Unforgettable Fire, it wasn't a great album but it was no where near as good as there next one. For me, Eno should have more influence on the next record. He refined Coldplay's sound this album so he could set it up to hopefully revolutionise their sound for the next one.

The thought of Coldplay's next album being another Joshua Tree...it gives me goosebumps. :D

I love The Joshua Tree to death, but to see Coldplay turn into U2 (who turned into shit after Joshua Tree) would be horribly depressing.

Its funny because I was all atwitter before the last album in anticipation of the VLV being Coldplay's 'Joshua Tree'. Everything from the quotes, to the producer, to songs like ASARY hinted at it, but in the end it turned out, not disappointing, but something completely contrary to my expectations. I've decided its futile trying to make predictions off of stupid stuff like song titles. Who would've guessed before-hand that 'Chinese Sleep Chant', 'Violet Hill' and 'DAAHF's' would sound anything like they do?

Exactly. I expected Rainy Day to be like Violet Hill was, Violet Hill to be like Strawberry Swing was, and Chinese Sleep Chant to be some kind of a capella lullaby.

ASARY got me so ecstatic for the album. I love that song. I was thinking wow, if that's a b-side, the rest of the album is going to be incredible.

I expected Violet Hill to be a piano ballad and CSC to be some sort of quiet ambient stuff.

What's that in your avatar Chris?

That's Ian Curtis of Joy Division from the 'atmosphere' video. I'm not much of a fan, but I thought it was cool.

VLV was original although I regret them not putting the proper Viva sounding songs like Goldrush, Prospekts March, Rainy Day etc on the album. Songs like 42, Death And All His Friends and possibly Lovers were far too safe and all could have featured on previous albums EVEN though they are great songs. But they were songs that showed Coldplay reverting back to old habits! If they had included the songs mentioned that feature on Prospekts March and as b sides VLV could possibly have been a genre, defining album and a great one as well.

I have always said, Prospekts March is what is coming! Those tracks are amazing. Life in Technicolor ii could have torn up the charts if released in VLV position, but they made the right choice.

Still VLV with the more raw sounding songs of Coldplay past we love would have been amazing! They are going to drop an amazing follow up. I think it will be called Bloodless Revolution...heh

He also produced Coldplay's worst album.

He's tainting their actual musical... thing.

XandY is actually. But I think they should, I think Enos overrated.

I like VLV alot, I remember Chris saying they were boring people and wanted to put colour in them, so when people say their turning a bit Poppy, that was to be expected and if Eno is just trying to find Coldplay themselves then he should stay for at least another album and hopefully its gonna rock our socks off.

I'm one who thinks that VLV is a great album and that Eno isn't "tainting" their music. Since Parachutes, I've always been a fan, but I have changed and grown, just as Coldplay's music has. I think their albums get better and better as they go.

If Brian Eno has helped them push their sound in the direction VLV took...than, he should stay. I like their new sound. It's electric and makes me want to sing and dance. Nothing, except Yellow, made me want to sing and dance off of Parachutes. In fact, as much as I love the album, it gets slow and monotonous towards the end.

So...I guess that places me on the "keep Eno" bandwagon. :\

I think VLV is a great album, I also loved X&Y, both are quite different in their own ways to their early stuff though, which isn't a bad thing. But I have to admit one day I'd like to see them do an album with more acoustic based stuff again, more songs like Sparks! But all their albums are great in their own way anyway, so saying they need to 'ditch Eno' is way over the top!

What I do not understand is how people dislike X&Y

IT IS SO GOOD.

The record stands out from the previous two and though it may be long, it's a nice change. Every song flows very well and you can listen to it completely.

Now, with Eno, I don't think they should get rid of him.

Why would they?

It is by far their best and most unique record and the changed direction that he's produced has only been positive as fans have wanted more and more. He's also helped make this record something Chris wanted to, something everyone can sing to, this element can be found in every song, if you look for it. apart from Reign of Love.

Keep Eno, just like U2, Coldplay were looking to stand out, they since have, so why change that?

What I don't understand is why people are so against Coldplay's new "direction".

Let's face it: their music has grown just as they have grown and just as we, their fans, have grown... do you really expect them to keep producing the same old records, using the same old tricks?! No, just like true musicians they search for ways to make their art different and pleasing in a more variety of ways. And if they employ the help of Eno to do it yet again, then so be it. I'm all for any direction they go in - they've never let me down before!

And for the record, I thought X&Y was a gorgeous record; I simply loved how their music became more electric and not the same-old love ballads Coldplay had gained a reputation for in Parachutes & AROBTTH. Change is good; change makes progress and progress makes success.

Viva La Vida had amazing songs with amazing new unique ideas - admittedly, a huge change from their generally stripped-down sound from Parachutes, but still positively gorgeous songs from a positively gorgeous band.

Coldplay's fans have grown? The trend I've noticed is that with this new album their demographic has shifted to a lower age range. Wayyy more 13 year olds.

That's just the consequence of being a popular band, I guess.
