Coldplay should ditch Eno.

What I don't understand is why people are so against Coldplay's new "direction".

Let's face it: their music has grown just as they have grown and just as we, their fans, have grown... do you really expect them to keep producing the same old records, using the same old tricks?! No, just like true musicians they search for ways to make their art different and pleasing in a more variety of ways. And if they employ the help of Eno to do it yet again, then so be it. I'm all for any direction they go in - they've never let me down before!

And for the record, I thought X&Y was a gorgeous record; I simply loved how their music became more electric and not the same-old love ballads Coldplay had gained a reputation for in Parachutes & AROBTTH. Change is good; change makes progress and progress makes success.

Viva La Vida had amazing songs with amazing new unique ideas - admittedly, a huge change from their generally stripped-down sound from Parachutes, but still positively gorgeous songs from a positively gorgeous band.

Thank you, an X&Y lover!

and i agree, there is no point making the same stuff, look at how bland Nickelback is. That is why no Coldplay fan likes them! :P It's all the same.

I hate hearing 'Coldplay sounds the same', because those people are ignorant, they have to listen to all four records in order and then try to make that comment

I'm so glad to see this thread 'cos it was seeming like I was the only one who liked X&Y lol. It's such a good album, I think Talk, White Shadow, the title track, A Message, Square One and What If are all up with their best work.

I agree with you guys.....X & Y is one of the best. Viva la Vida is a different sound, but Coldplay isn't gonna stay the same for the entire career. Most likely their sound will change yet again with their new album. And there will always be people who hate certain things. No offense to anyone. But I'd like to see what Eno does with their next album.

I'm with ya. So tired of this viva la vida thing....was fun at first but please, until here and no further. It was nice listening to some 'different' coldplay but AROBTTH, X & Y and parachutes are what really defines CP. I fee like this just really isnt their cup of tea..eventho they doing great in the charts.

'Just waiting till the shine wears off'

Well Chris, it has. Now ditch that fella and make us some real music :D

I think they should make an album like old Spiritualized or Mercury Rev! Freak people out lol

Coldplay's fans have grown? The trend I've noticed is that with this new album their demographic has shifted to a lower age range. Wayyy more 13 year olds.

Maybe on this forum, perhaps. I hardly saw any 13 year old kids at the concerts I attended. If anything they were people in their 20's, 30's, 40's, and older. I just didn't see many teens walking around or jamming out to Coldplay's music.

But, naturally, as Coldplay grows in popularity, the age of their fanbase expands, but I don't agree that the demographic has shifted to the majority of 13 year olds.

The live crowd is different from the studio crowd. Adults are more likely to go to concerts because they CAN. A lot of young kids can't afford it/don't have anyone to go with.

True, but that doesn't stop millions of thirteen year old kids from going to see The Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus or Taylor Swift in concert............so.............{shrugs}

Yes, that Nickelback reference hit exactly the target! Their stuff is just repetitive and bland, the same tricks, the same sound - something that I hope Coldplay never turns into!

X&Y lovers, unite! :nice:

*gag* *retch*

THOSE NAMES SHALL NEVER BE SPOKEN OF IN COLDPLAYING AGAIN.

i really think that even if they ditched eno, they wouldnt go back to "old coldplay."

There we go. I love Parachutes & AROBTTH as much as the next guy, but Coldplay have decided to change their style. I personally think the jump to Viva La Vida is exactly of the same intensity of that from AROBTTH to X&Y...

I love X&Y.

VLV.

BLEAUGAHG.

Not really, but I don't like it as much. I don't think you can wrong someone because they don't like the new direction. It's all personal preference.

Yes I know. and I hate how 'successful' they are. IT'S ALL THE SAME

Coldplay won't. Chris is too much of a free spirit to stay with one style, which is why they called Eno in the first place. If he comes back, good, there will be more change happening which should always be welcome in the music industry because that is the music that gets more fan appreciation!

^If they got a new producer logically there would be moar change still, though.

oh no doubt, no matter who they bring it, change is certain

Erm, no. You heard the same sort of synth sound over all of the X&Y tracks, not to mention the (IMO) overproducing (if that's the right word to use). I mean I like X&Y as well but that's still something I don't really like. That and too many songs.

ironic to some comments, they took on Brian Eno because they all agreed that X&Y was generic and bland with the same old tricks being used.

Honestly, I think one of the things I like least about VLV is the lyrics. I mean, apparently they're the most developed or whatever. But personally, I just miss the sort of sincerity, emotion, and just you know personal touch to the lyrics. Like in Parachutes, AROBTTH, and even X&Y.

But I've always been huge on lyrics, so maybe that's why.

I loved Violet Hill when it came out cause I loved how it was kind of political and about war or whatever but it also tied in the personal, emotional aspects with the "if you love me" bit.

On VLV, they only songs that really do it for my lyrically are Strawberry Swing, Violet Hill, and maybe Death And All His Friends. VLV is actually pretty good in the verses too.

What am I trying to say? I dunno, maybe I'm a sappy ass and want more love songs. I don't think so though. I just want the emotional lyrics Coldplay is known for.

Even, you know, Swallowed In The Sea... the lyrics aren't profound my any stretch, people might say they're simple. But they're heartfelt and that what matters. Even Fix You, people think it's cheese, but I appreciate the simplicity cause it's meaningful.

agreed. Eno hasn't done anything good since early U2.

oh. I love his work with david Byrne.

I couldnt agree with you more, no matter what the majority has been saying I've felt a serious lacking in the lyric department on viva

Coldplay just has too many fucking good lyrics on every album that I couldn't even begin to decide which has the best...

First of all, how does something get titled 'over-produced'?

some of the synth yes, was the same, but it was a branch off into a new direction for the band. X&Y was not like their first two records and it may have been different, but it wasn't bad.

I don't get why everyone says it was BAD.

Just because Chris goes, there were too many songs, we can't say, why did they put too many songs?

IMO too many songs would have been an X&Y double album, which it wasn't.

we're always dying for more CP songs, so why did we complain off this record?

In my opinion, Viva sounds like a band having fun and enjoying the process of creating. If Eno had any part in that, more power to him.

First of all, how does something get titled 'over-produced'?

I already said I wasn't sure that I wasn't sure it was the right word to use, you don't have to point it out and attempt to make me look stupid.

I'm not always dying for more CP songs. We complained because it was too much to listen to in one sitting. First it was "OMG SO GOOD" and now... eh. Good albums age well, like AROBTTH. X&Y did not.
