Coldplay should ditch Eno.

I think that all of the albums have gotten better from one to the next. In my opinion, Viva is the best so far, and they just keep getting better. I think whatever they choose to do will be great and will exceed anyone's expectations. I personally think Eno has worked on some of the best albums of all time, so I would keep him if it was me.

Both Eno and Jon Hopkins had a big influence on the record, I think -- I mean Life In Technicolor AND The Escapist are almost Hopkins' songs anyway... intrumentally, at least, I think both of them were kind of heavy-handed in their production.

I'm not sure if it would make the next record better but I don't really think the Eno sound fits with the Coldplay sound. You know?

And the next album doesn't have to sound like Parachutes OR A Rush imo, I mean it would be kind of nice if it did, but that isn't going to happen. It just needs to be... not as poppish. Or that's what I think. I think Eno's affecting them a little too much.

Exactly!

VLV to some extent is innovative for them, which is good. I know the next album will be innovative too, but I hope it would be much less poppish.

You Epic Fail

Seriously?????? Viva la Vda or Death & All His Friends is my favorite album!!!!!!

And do you even know how epic Brian Eno is???????:veryangry2:

Agreed!

i really think that even if they ditched eno, they wouldnt go back to "old coldplay."

I agree. Coldplay isn't just going to return to making every album "Parachutes".

Give me strength.

Can you feel the love tonight?

On a personal level, Parachutes and AROBTTH mean more to me, but I can't honestly say that the music on those albums is "better". In fact, it's rather bland compared to VlV. For the first time, Coldplay pushed music in general forward. There really isn't another arena rock band with songs like Lost! and Viva la Vida. On the flipside, plenty of bands now milk the piano rock of the early albums (see The Fray) or even the sonic yelping of X&Y (see Kings of Leon).

The music-and lyrics-on Viva la Vida simply have more to offer than previous efforts. Sometimes I think we're blinded by the music we fell in love with. I, for example, still rank AROBTTH as my favorite album because I discovered it at a time when the atmosphere of the album worked almost as a soundtrack to my life. I "discovered" VlV, on the other hand, because I was a fan of their earlier work. Of course the album would never compare on a personal level. But the music is undoubtedly more impressive.

Whether that's due to Eno or not, I hope it continues.

These are really good points.

Eno did not produce the Joshua Tree on first effort. He helped reinvent U2, and to find the musicans they wanted to be. Then after an extensive tour and Live Aid; released the biggest album of the 80s. Which still has 3 singles in heavy rotation to this date alone!

VLV was Coldplay finding themselves. I have said it before, they had self confidence issues, and were breaking up. Eno saved them, proved they can make good music, and made them a international superhit. They are confident enough now to make the music they want.

Look at the Demos, look at Prospekts March and look at the B-sides. They are great, Parachutes meets Viva style albums. You will get what you wish for.

Personally, I want Coldplay to make music they are passionate about, then and only then will they get their down in history album. Eno can lead them there.

Viva la vida was excellent, like it or not. I say they stick with eno for the next album to squeeze out the last of his creative juices then change producers after they have reached bigger sucess with LP5 than any other album before.

I'm totally with you on ditching eno. I never cared for viva very much in the beginning, and my opinion of it has only worsened. I haven't listened to the album straight through in probably 6 months. To me its their most boring work to date, they now sound more like everything else on the radio, different for them yes, but not "different" in the grand sense of inventiveness. Where different the album sounds forced, and frankly overall somewhat amateur for a band that produced something as grand as clocks or politik. I've never felt this way about one of their records all of their past work gets frequent play in my house including b-sides. I'm not asking for a rehash of old style, I simply want to hear the natural evolution of a band not the product of a producer scribbling down ideas that the band pulls out of a hat.

I think they did exactly the opposite of what they set out to do. We all know their bigger now but I would seriously question the "better" part of the equation.

That's a good way of puttng it :nice:

Smartest thread I've ever seen.

If they keep working with Eno, they'll turn into U2.

PLZ NOES.

Burn the man alive.

lol

I agree.

I dunno. At first I loved the Viva thing, but I am so tired of it. In retrospect it's not as good as I thought it way. I guess I forgot how much better their old stuff is.

I want some oldies with more piano and acoustics.

They say they wanted Eno so they could get better instead of bigger.

I think they got a lot bigger and more plain different than better.

I'm not talking about the costumes (Although, I feel the same about those). I do, however, think he was very involved with the creative process of making the actual music.

I agree with ALL of that!

Ditch Eno!

He was maybe OK for this album to get them out of X&Y mode....but I dont want them to keep going this way

I really disagree. Parachutes pales in comparison to VLV. I like Parachutes, but their work on VLV is much better than that. As it should be.

So, I'm very pro Eno.

Basically what it boils down to is: If you liked VLVOD Eno stays. If not, Eno goes.

I think Viva was their best album by far in terms of music and lyrics. It was original and insightful and honest and unexpected, and maybe we have Eno to thank for that. But to me, Eno is more of a lubricant to the ideas than anything. He just sort of encourages the ideas that the musicians think of, and then claims to be some great producer. I think he is far overrated, and now that he has 'helped' Coldplay out of their rut, they need to move on to someone who will give some real insight from a new perspective, rather than someone who will take others' ideas, expand upon them, and then claim them as his own.

Who's with me?

Idk, I think it's more of Coldplay changing themselves than Eno changing them.

yeah cause he only produced the best selling album of 2008 and the most downloaded album of all time. yeah they should totally ditch him.[/sarcasm]

Mainstream success is everything? wow

He also produced Coldplay's worst album.

He's tainting their actual musical... thing.

I don't think that's Eno's fault, once again.

You might think so. I think it's great, and you can't argue with it because it's their most successful album.

Once again, wow. /facepalm.

Viva was innovative and I love it but I think I don't want them to continue going that way. If Eno had such a great influence on Viva they could try listening to less his ideas and more developing their own. If it's not Eno's "fault" then I have to agree with Josh.

I don't think Coldplay will/can ever make an album like Parachutes again. Because of the mega rock gods they are today, an album as simplistic as that one would be impossible to pull off.

I like the analogy someone once brought up comparing U2 and Coldplay's first 5 albums. First 3 were a trilogy, and much more simple. On the 4th they both got really innovative and daring. Coldplay doesn't have a fifth yet, but U2's fifth is widely considered one of the greatest albums of all time. Hopefully Coldplay will be able to pull off a Joshua Tree.

I agree. with whoever said that eno is getting too much credit. these were all coldplay's ideas. the songs at least. and i personally think that the album is amazing and does not bore easily, but as with everything this is just an opinion.

Yea, the songs themselves are pure Coldplay. Eno just adds in synths and atmospheres and stuff, all under the direction of Martin and Co.

DITCH ENO! ARE YOU MAD?! Eno's only just begun weaving his magic with Coldplay. Eno's first record with U2 was The Unforgettable Fire, it wasn't a great album but it was no where near as good as there next one. For me, Eno should have more influence on the next record. He refined Coldplay's sound this album so he could set it up to hopefully revolutionise their sound for the next one.

+1

Viva was the first album that ever made me take notice of Coldplay. It's mature, polished, dark, progressive....it's an amazing story of love, fear, God, happiness, destruction. Brilliant songwriting and musicianship. Albums like this aren't supposed to be made by "top 40 bands". As a result I saw them 3 times on this tour, more than I've seen anyone on any particular tour in my life. The album is breathtaking in every sense of the word.

How much of that was Eno I don't know. But, I do know that it turned me into a fan. What's the harm in staying with him? I agree, they should keep him on for the next one. I hope they continue this direction, because it made fan out of me, someone who usually stuck to progressive rock only (Genesis, Yes, Marillion, Triumvirat, etc.). Thanks to Viva I now carry a torch for Coldplay. Big time.

Why call somebody mad just because she disagrees with you?
