Pseudonym
Watching Glastonbury 2002 and Live 03 so much lately really makes me appreciate what a great live band they were back then. More down-to-earth, with more rock type songs and a focus on sound and putting on a good performance of the songs. Now it's more of an overall show, with less focus on the sound (especially apparent on LRLRL). Not that they sound bad now, but Chris is definitely putting more effort into dancing and less into singing than he used to. I just kind of miss those old days when they would put on a rock concert, and not a butterfly filled dance fest. Again, not complaining about their current live shows, just liking the old ways more. So which do you PREFER?
Josh42
The music itself was better pre-VLV. More personal, raw, and emotional. The special effects are phenomenal nowadays, there's a lot more crowd participation, and Chris Martin's charisma gets better and better every day. Can't decide. Pseudonym
To me though, how they played 7 or 8 unheard songs at Glastonbury 2002 and got the kind of crowd reactions they got, that to me is the mark of a truly legendary band putting on a legendary show. BlueberrySwing
I prefer the Twisted Logic-Tour Era. Maybe because X&Y is my favourite album, but I like this setlist more than the current. But furthermore, I agree with Fitz aswell. Today, a Coldplay gig is a show. A real one which entertains. But back in 2003, they came on stage and just played. There where some lights, that's it. In 2005/2006, they had both, parts of the AROBTTH-Era which focused the music and parts of the VLV-Tour which focused the show. And that's exactly what I think defines a great band. Ziggy
torn I only became a fan with Viva, but have grown to love their early work too. I saw them live 10 days ago for the first time. Since then, I've re-watched the Live 2003 DVD a couple of times. The difference between the show then and now is staggering. I used to think the DVD showed massive audiences and a complex show, but the current tour is much, much bigger and showier. I have no compaints about either - love the music of both eras. But I think we'd be disappointed if they didn't evolve steadily. One of the big things I love about them is that they are constantly seeking to learn and expand and improve and be the best they can be. I can hardly wait to see what they do next! Just because I'm tearing, doesn't mean I'm torn. :embarassed:
noonsun
They are kind of bleh now compared to before... Chris only puts bucketloads of emotion into the lyrics a la Rush of Blood tour when he's sitting down at the piano, and not always then either. LadyBellaStrawberry
I have only been to the Viva La Vida Concert. I love their earlier work a bit more (X&Y). It would have been awesome to see them before the Viva La Vida Era. But Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends is so different, so out there. No one makes music like that but Coldplay, and they are so full of energy, its so.. welll there is no words for it :p VLV is so different than what all the other artists put out now a days but yet its also so different than Coldplay's previous albums. Its so unique, so i would have to say no matter what era, Coldplay will always be amazing, but in the VLV era they aren't just amazing their amazingly different. ... if I make any sense at all haha :D
TF5092
two of my favorite songs are Politik and The Scientist, which dont seem to have the same emotion as they did when played in 2002/2003. Other than that, the VLV tour is awesome. Here is something unrelated for after this tour...coldplay has toured for so long and done so many shows wearing the same exact outfit, it is going to be interesting to see them wearing something else in future years! RoosAnne
I agree with the ones who've said that the Viva shows are a bit too showies. Before Chris could sit with his piano during the most of a gig, and it was just beautiful. Now they wear this clothes and it's so much about entertaining the crowd all the way through the show. Miss how their concerts used to be a bit more down to earth. Now don't misunderstand me, I love the Viva shows!! But.. I prefer their old shows.. :smug:. bear
i really cant decide. i love the songs in arobtth era, and they always did put on a really great show. but i really like the audience participation now, and the whole band seems to just get really into it. plus, the band has been really good this tour at making the sure the show doesnt lag or drone on for too many people. ricardo
Well, if I were keen to see a show I'd buy a Cirque du Soleil ticket, however I want a music concert, that's why I see glastonbury 2002 and llive 2003. Glastonbury 2005 would have been perfect if Chris were into singing in tune rather than jumping and fooling around in stage.
