Chris Martin = 'ripped'

MVA winners Shynola praise Coldplay frontman for his fitness

Coldplaypress286.jpg

The Shynola team scooped three gongs at the annual UK Music Video Awards last night (13 Oct) for their video for Strawberry Swing by Coldplay.

The team, which has made videos for Blur and Radiohead in the past, went home with Best Rock Video, Video of the Year and Best Animation in a Video at the event in London.

Speaking to 6 Music, Kenny from Shynola said they were worried the Strawberry Swing shoot would be physically demanding for Chris Martin.

Martin had to hold various poses for quite a long time as he was captured as a superhero character against a moving backdrop of animated chalk drawings. (Watch the video).

However, he confounded their expectations: "Chris Martin is incredibly fit, he’s absolutely ripped," Kenny explained. "I’m sure he won’t mind me saying that.

"He could do everything really well. He does loads of yoga and we had lots of bits where he was on a trolley and it was physically really difficult for him."After testing out some of the moves, Kenny said he was horrified at what they were going to have to ask him to do.

"I did it for about 10 seconds as a test and after that my hips were hurting so much I just felt incredibly old. After that I thought, 'We are either gonna kill him, or we’re going to get sued'," he laughed.

They admitted during the filming of flying, superhero shots, Chris Martin even offered to do a handstand, so they could get a shot of him in flight from behind.

"It was incredible because if he’d been bad, he could have scuppered the whole video, but in the end he was so amazing that we wrapped earlier than we’d anticipated," added Kenny.

The video briefly ran into controversy recently after songwriter Andy Gallagher said it resembled his own work.

But its makers strongly denied the claims with an online statement here, and no further action has been taken.

The Shynola directors are currently in the early stages of work on a science fiction feature film.

They have brought the rights to a book called The Red Men and are currently re-writing the script.
