Uni you have SO much time. If you work part-time and don't pay for petrol you can fund this stuff easily.

As for the EP, stay posted. My bandmate gets back from the US at the end of the month, and we plan to properly release a single before the end of the year, and before an EP. It'll build some momentum. All the stuff's written, just needs to be recorded properly. The new demos excite us.

I can't wait to finish Uni to get into it!

Excited, both for uni and your new single. Are you on your last year of uni at the moment?

Yeah, it's an honours (4th year), that's why there's a thesis. I am looking forward to putting this single out, it's incredibly fun to play.

How do all of you people afford all these concerts/cds? What does you all do for jobs? I'm assuming you are all in uni doing something interesting?

I'm in my first year of uni (after a gap year last year spent working), studying acupuncture :D. I worked casually at a cafe for most of the year but recently quit to concentrate on my studies for the rest of the year, plus I don't want to work there again next year! I earned about $150 a week from that, and I get about the same amount of that through centrelink because I've moved out of home. Pretty much all my money goes towards my rent and food, but I'm lucky in the way that my parents help me out a bit so I can afford to go to gigs - just :P

I think they understand that since I've moved to the city going to gigs and listening to music has become my 'release' (for want of a better word lol) because I was forced to give up my sport.

However I plan on moving to a cheaper place next year which will actually mean I'll have less money to spend on this kind of stuff, which doesn't sound like it should make sense but I'll be more able to support myself by myself than I have this year...

thats awesome. is there anyway we could have a read of your thesis?

i just calculated my total expenditure on gigs this year. works out to be just below $1100 not including The National which is in 2011. i rarely buy cds for more than $10 so even though i've bought about 70 cds this year it would've cost me far less than all those gigs have.

and bryce im not sure how old you are but im 20 now and i saw coldplay on my 19th bday and that was only my 3rd ever gig. so if you're younger than that dont feel bad or left out or anything.

Seconded re the thesis, I'm curious to see what you've written!

As for gigs, I've figured out that including Splendour I'll have spent a total of about $1,200. Which is about 6 weeks rent for me... :P

And my first concert was only last year, I was almost 18. It's only really this year that I've really started going hardcore with the gigs.

It's a disgusting habit.

And yeah Bryce you have so much to look forward to. Uni is prime music-gig-viewing time!

It's not disgusting! Haha. Expensive, but it's better than, say, doing drugs on the weekend :P

Also, NOT TRUE haha. I have 24 hours of class per week, and I'm at uni at least 6 hours a day 5 days a week. And then I work on weekends. But I know that's an abnormally large number of contact hours, lol. But I love uni, it's much more fun than high school :P

Ok I meant you have more time whilst studying compared to say school, or full time work.

just listening to some Powderfinger tonight. if these guys were either american or english they wouldve been rocking fucking stadiums years ago. and it made me realise the lack of aussie rock anthems in the last few years. i cant think of a single one since Woman.

Can't wait to see them in their Sunsets tour. Last Melbourne concert ever, too. I don't know why a lot of people hate powderfinger. Bernard Fanning is a brilliant songwriter and frontman.

We don't get stadium rock anymore, it's mostly all dance-pop.

I've never really fully understood what actually constitutes "stadium" rock. I mean, if a band gets big enough they'll fill stadiums and as long as they know what they're doing they should sound great regardless... am I making sense? :P

Is there, in your opinion(s), a defining aspect of stadium rock or am I looking at this the wrong way?

Also, I've got a lot of friends up north that have seen Powderfinger in their shows in the last couple of weeks in Townsville and Rockhampton. Everyone I've talked to about it were blown away by the show. I've put my name down to be working at their last 3 gigs here (last 3 EVER) so I really really hope I get to do that!

stadium rock is that big expansive rock sound that U2, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Queen and Muse do so well. a great comparison would be between parachutes coldplay and VLV coldplay. parachutes is a quiet very basic collection of songs, the songs have very few layers and are quite simple. VLV on the other hand is far more anthemic and "louder" with many many more layers creating that aforementioned expansive sound.

a lot of bands make that stadium rock sound well before they ever start to play such venues. for examples pearl jams debut Ten is very much like that, it was perfect for those big arenas yet it was mostly played in small clubs because the band wasnt that popular at that stage.

Nailed it. I love stadium rock. Its so grandiose.

Cheers, great explanation! I had an idea it was something along those lines but you cleared it up a lot for me!

thanks. but you are right Grace. a lot of bands just play stadiums because thats how popular they are. arctic monkeys dont exactly have a "stadium rock" sound, their music is very tight if you know what i mean but because theyre so massive in the UK they have to play stadiums even though it doesnt really suit their sound. INXS were like that too, playing stadiums even though it didnt work for them.

a good test you could try. play a band like Muse or VLV era coldplay in the biggest room in your house or even out in the open. then play something by The National or The Panics and see how that sounds. you'll find that muse sounds much better in that setting due to the nature of their music.

Mmm, I see what you're saying

Anyway, I was looking through the first few pages of this thread today (no particular reason) and realised that as of 4 days ago this thread is a year old!

:awesome:

Also, listening to The Drum's set from Splendour on Triple J, I'm really not sure I like their live sound. I'm so so glad I saw TDCC over them.

Happy 1st birthday, thread.

Has anyone heard about Laneway presale info yet? It says to sign up to the mailing list for info but I guess nothing has been distributed yet.

Yep, they sent a reminder which is helpful otherwise I would've forgotten! Still a very worthwhile subscription.
