my opinion on birds of tokyo. debut had some great moments. sophomore is one of my favourite aussie rock albums ever. and i would rather watch paint dry than listen to their 3rd album.

And most of the hype is for their third album too. Universes was decent, I liked it. I don't think I've got there first. Anyway, my exams are over so I'll have time to listen to them a bit more closely now. And also, may I just suggest that we start discussing the Coldplaying Aussie Album of the year award this weekend, unless anyone has any strong objections. Like i mean just start throwing some names around and so on. Any input?

yeah feel free to start talking about it. i'll join in, in a couple of weeks when im done with exams. actually i'll be at my laptop a lot over the next few days so i might keep an eye on it.

the only reason i can think of for not starting the discussion is if there are any major releases we're still waiting on. it would also be great if we come up with a winner before the J Award is handed down. triple j has 3 more albums to feature before the end of ausmusic month, will be interested to see what they come up with. this weeks is a Finn brothers compilation which kinda gives the impression they're getting a little desperate.

also has anyone else heard the Julia Stone solo album? The Memory machine it's called. ive taken a couple of listens and i was rather impressed, not quite the quality of A+J Stone work but it does have a sweet vibe to it although her constant stories about being "the other woman" can be a little irritating. and has anybody listened to the John Steel Singers debut?

speaking of debut. it was hilarious at the arias when jess mauboy pronounced debut as "dee-butt" LOL!

Unearthed Band of the Year noms

+ The Jezabels

+ Big Scary

+ Gypsy & The Cat

+ Boy & Bear

+ Stonefield

Boy & Bear to win, no arguments.

and finally we need to decide on who will be on our "panel" for album of the year. hate to sound elitist but we need informed judges.

I REALLY don't understand the hype around Stonefield.

How many will be on this panel?

I'd vote Alex, Jamie and Bryce... you guys all seem to know what you're talking about :P

dont forget yourself grace!!

i watched triple j presents the temper trap today. a great recording of a great young band. i couldnt help but wonder if this was triple j kinda saying "sorry guys for not featuring your great debut album and consequently making it ineligible for a J award nomination"

staying on the triple j theme. here is a great tweet from Kingsmill on aria night.

"i predict Temper Trap will win an ARIA in 2011 for Sweet Disposition. maybe "Best Single across 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011"

:laugh3:

if the ARIA awards had simply taken all the most well known FM radio presenters, music channel/show presenters and some old school aussie rockers to present all the awards on the night it wouldve been so much better. and where were the two funniest guys in the country!! hamish and andy! they wouldve hosted the shit out of the arias! sorry to keep on about this but i was so ashamed of our music scene on sunday night :(

Seems pretty fair to me. Killer single.

The only hype there is about those guys is the hype Triple J is creating around them.

Haha, I'd vote for them :P

It's quite funny how much channel ten has copped over Sunday night. It serves them right, so it will be interesting to see what they do next year.

well i guess triple j did "discover" them so its only natural they hype em regardless of quality. werent they called something else originally and they changed their name?

from i hear this is the last year ch10 has the rights to the show. i might be wrong.

Yeah, they were called Iotah before they had to change it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought channel nine televised the aria's last year? Either way I think we can assume it's not going to be ten again next year :P

Yeah. Ch9 next year. Fingers crossed Eddie's not hosting.

i think grace is right. ch9 did show it in 2009 and now the rights have been given to ch10. personally i wouldnt mind if the arias next year were a low key event held INSIDE the opera house. with no one trying to be funny, no international guests (exceptions made for members of radiohead) and no fucking politicians (regardless of how "independent" they are)

did tame impala perform on the night? did cloud control perform? i think i mentioned a few pages back that together i think they had 8 nominations.

YES I was thinking that. International guests next year could be radiohead or coldplay!

Tame Impala and Cloud control (in the UK now) didn't perform... they could have on one of the earlier awards night throughout the week.

I can't think of any Australian albums that I am waiting for at the moment. Cut Copy is coming next year so everything seems fine to do ahead, unless I'm missing something. I have heard Julia Stone's solo debut, I quite enjoyed it. I also have John Steel Singers album but I haven't listened to it yet. That will be this weekend.

I agree, Boy and Bear will probably win unless they have some extremely biased judging system in place. The Jezabels have done alright this year as well.

Yeah, I agree. Jamie, Alex, Grace and myself sounds good. I can't think of anyone else that would want to do it and posts here enough. Im not quite sure how much aussie music eddie listens to. Anyway, unless there are other suggestions/nominations, the panel sounds set.

That has got to be one of the best tweets I have read. No doubt that song will go down as an Aussie classic.

And I think that is how the ARIA should work. They try to make it too big of an event. And I cool with international guests if they are Radiohead. Thats if they wanted to come that is...

I agree. Bob Katter looked absolutely ridiculous and he can't even read properly.

Gypsy and the Cat's debut comes out on Friday, I'd like to give that a couple of listens. I haven't yet listened to John Steel Singers' or Julia's album yet, but I will once these exams are out of the way.

Direct quote from Bernard Fanning at Powderfinger concert tonight in Brissy:

"If there's one positive thing we can take from tonight, it's that we're not at the arias. Can I use the word... clusterfuck??"

I was lucky enough tonight to be able to work at the riverstage for their 3rd last gig, and the bar closed early enough for me to catch the latter 90min of their 2hr set. Looking forward to doing the same again on Friday and Saturday nights!

oh wow that is awesome!!!! the fall out from the arias is almost always on the negative. but ive never seen a reaction like this before. the only two positives that have come out of it would be Washingtons performance and julia stones speech.

i just realised the shear "massiveness" of the tours going around the country in december this year. just in one week alone in sydney we'll have 3 of this years glastonbury headliners, gorillaz who headlined friday night, muse who did saturday night and U2 who were meant to on the friday night. on top of that you have linkin park (the highest selling band of the last decade, yes higher than coldplay) and bon jovi doing 3 sold out nights at our footy stadium. ALL IN THE SAME WEEK!

i also worked out that if you bought the best tickets to each of those 5 shows it would total over $1200.

(i got sick of studying accounting so i did some concert accounting instead haha)

FUCK YES! Bring on this massiveness.

Over two weeks in december, baby... U2, U2, Jack Johnson, Gorillaz & Muse....

When you think of it, there have been/will be a LOT of big bands touring Oz this year... Metallica, Bon Jovi, U2, ACDC, Muse, Gorillaz, Linkin Park, not to mention bands that are big on the alternative scene coming out for festivals and such... not a bad year for live music in Oz, really...

Let's hope this epicness continues!

anyone else watch the powderfinger doco on abc tonight? i watched about half over dinner and it was very entertaining and i liked it how they spent a lot of time on talking about their less documented early days. myf is very charismatic and sweet as usual and i loved it how the band come across as mature adults. im sick of bands who are in their 40s acting like theyre still 18 (im looking at you green day!) powderfinger were dressed smartly in suit jackets and neat shirts and there no rockstar gimmicks.

i know the band would never admit this but i still do hold the theory that (and this is something that was brought up in the doco) they called it a day because they never quite cracked the american market after all those years and all those brilliant albums. and they see these young acts like empire of the sun and temper trap doing it in just one album (if not one song!) and it must've just killed them inside. like i mentioned a few posts back, powderfinger should be rocking arenas around the world with the music they have made but i think its humility and simple-mindedness and as i mentioned before lack of rockstar gimmicks that kind of kept them from making it big in the states.

I used to listen to Powderfinger and Crowded House.

Ok, so the first album I would like to nominate for discussion is Innerspeaker - Tame Impala. Discuss.
