I'm going to argue Miami Horror until the cows come home so it needs to be included!

Same thoughts with the cloud control thing. VW night one, thought they were OK. Night 2, LOVED them. It's a top album.

As for the Angus and Julia Stone thing, meh... just not my type of music. Neither WASHINGTON I refuse to listen to her album... But we need people with different tastes on this panel!!

good luck trying to convince me it's the best album of the year. having seen them live 3 times and heard most of the album on triple j i cant say i think it's album of the year quality.

So are we all in agree of the final list up for discussion?

Aye.

COLDPLAYING 2010 AUSSIE ALBUM NOMINATIONS:

Angus & Julia Stone's "Down The Way"

Cloud Control's "Bliss Release"

The Holidays' "Post Paradise"

Miami Horror's "Illumination"

Seabellies' "By Limbo Lake"

Tame Impala's "Innerspeaker"

We can argue why each album should win. Give everyone a chance to pout forth their opinion.

Then once we have given every album nominated a discussion, a vote shall be conducted ranking each album 1-6. Album with the lowest score wins. (Bit like golf....)

Let's go in alphabetical order and firstly discuss the reasons for crowning #1 album to:

Angus & Julia Stone

"Down The Way"

Angus-and-Julia-Stone-Down-The-Way.jpg

My thoughts. Well I haven't heard the album to be honest. Apart from their top single, 'Jet Plane', which is unmistakably breathtaking. I hate to admit, but since the ARIA awards were mostly dominated by indie or alternative artists, they could have in fact awarded both of the top prizes to a deserved winner.

More facts:

- Australian #1 album (None of the others nominated got to #1 on the charts [sidenote: I hate the charts])

- Their sophomore release (all other albums nominated are debuts)

Come forth, those have listened to it. Place forth your arguments.

Down The Way

brilliant songwriting, impeccable vocals and impressive musicianship. it is a long album but none of the tracks are filler. not only does it have great singles like Big Jet Plane and And The Boys but it works great as an album album.

why shouldnt it win? Innerspeaker is better :P

Down the Way is one of those albums that I can listen to again and again and the beauty of it doesn't fade. Granted, I'm a big fan of strings. But they utilise so many different instruments, to keep the songs sounding different enough for the album to be enjoyable the whole way through, but similar enough to keep it flowing for the whole hour that it runs for. The songwriting is brilliant, and like Jamie said there aren't any fillers on the album.

I'm not saying it should win, but it's nonetheless a brilliant album. Perfect for a lazy Sunday afternoon :D

Note: opinion may be influenced after having seen them three times this year...

AHH MY COMPUTER KEEPS DOUBLE POSTING.

Sorry :dozey:

Yeah I think seeing/hearing the album live is going to have some influence. Does this strengthen it's contention for the #1 slot?

^ It has definately strengthened it for me. But seeing as we're talking album of the year, not live performance of the year, it shouldn't really be taken into account. The album is still the album, regardless of how it sounds live.

Well I just relistened to the album the other day and I must say that it has got everything that the album of the year need to have. As has been said before hand, the musicinship is marvelous, the vocals are magnificent all the songs come together to make a strong album. I also believe it can stand the test of time, and not become simply another album of the catologue or something we wont listen to once the year is out. I also think that if we are going to judge all these albums fairly, it would probably help that we gave each of them a good listen.

Also, could someone let me know if this is legit to buy from, it got pretty much everything vinyl you could think of and would be great if I needed to buy something from there. http://www.redeye.com.au/iAsk.asp?reion=USA

Mainly because it has Innerspeaker LP available from overseas that has sold out in australia which I really want to own. Only about $40, which is a reasonable price.

Also does anyone know any other online stores that do similar deals? I know JB Hifi except they usually have high shipping costs (even though it is free at the moment) and dont stock all the vinyl that I would like to have. They are however, great for CDs.

EDIT: Also is this site legit, it has free shipping and Innerspeaker EP for $31. Seems too good to be true. http://www.cdwow.com.au/

^ I've never heard of the Red Eye Records place, but it looks legit enought.

As for CD Wow, I've never used it but I'm pretty sure Alex has... so I think it's fine too

CD WOW is amazing. The only problems I have are some of the CDs come cracked but they send you a new jewel case if that happens. Rare CDs are a bit more expensive but the mainstream ones are cheap as! Delivery times are long but its totally worth it.

Have you only ever bought CDs from there? How long do the deliveries usually take?

Also, I think we need to do a bit more talking about this album of the year thing if we are going to announce it before the J Awards.

^Agreed.

I'll be ducking in and out of here for the next couple of weeks because I'm in the middle of exam block, but I'll try.

So we all put in something about Down the Way, right?

So next on the list...

"Bliss Release"

by Cloud Control

cc-BLISS-RELEASE1-300x300.jpg

Ahhh, the album I put as my number one for this year.

The main reason for this is that I haven't stopped listening to the album since I got it back in [May/June?] on the day of its release. The sound is something new and fresh (for me anyway). From the kickstart of the guitar in 'Meditation Song #2' to the rather quirky lyrics of 'This is What I Said' to the beautiful closing of the album in 'Beast of Love', it's just a damn good listen. I once read a review that called the album "warmly nostalgic but never retro" which I think explains it pretty well.

The musicianship is fantastic and there is enough variation between songs to not get even slightly sick of their sound (again, my opinion of course).

And I think Alister's and Heidi's vocal complement each other really well.

There are songs you can dance to, songs you can relax to and songs that just make you feel happy. They're definitely all sing-along-worthy. It's an album full of strong tracks and has released some awesome singles.

In fact, I think I'm gonna go listen to it right now.

So yeah, that's my argument.

Your turn now :D

Have you only ever bought CDs from there? How long do the deliveries usually take?

Yeah I have only bought CDs but they sell a lot of other things on the site too.

Deliveries took around 2 weeks. It wasn't that bad, considering postage is free.

exams over. so i can focus on this album of the year thing a little more now

bliss release. i think the best thing about this album is the wide appeal that it has. it has some great mainstream pop sensibilities, intelligent songwriting that appeals to those of us who pay a bit more attention to music, a great variety of songs but not to the point where it feels incoherent and even a decent standard of musicianship.

as a collection of songs it might just be the best of the year but as an album album im not really sure. it's good but not amazing.

Bliss Release.

This has got to be one of the most listenable Australian albums of the year. Within are wonderful vocal melodies, uplifting songs and great range of instrumentation. It could easily be album of year, but only like Jamie said, as a collection of songs. It still works great as an album but there are other that come to mind that have a better flow. That being said, if that is the only real flaw that I can think of, than it is still doing exceptionally well to make album of the year.

And I just released that Conditions by Temper Trap only got a 4.6 on Pitchfork.
