Coldplayer Meet-up in London 2010

My diary from the Coldplayer meet-up in London can be read below. I had to put the diary into a spoiler as it would otherwise have filled too much.

MY DIARY FROM THE COLDPLAYER MEET-UP IN LONDON FROM SUNDAY 4.7 TO THURSDAY 15.7

Sunday 4.7: I left home a little before noon by taxi. I had an electronic ticket ready for the self-service check-in at the airport. I had a nice flight to London. I bought an Oyster Card – an Oyster Pay as you go - at the ticket office. I took the Piccadilly Line to Green Park and then Jubilee Line to Swiss Cottage and had a nice talk with an Englishman in the Tube. I felt that something was wrong - my heat rash started to burn and bleed. Unfortunately, I found no lift at Swiss Cottage station, so it was a sort of nightmare to get my suitcase / trunk and two bags up the stairs. I found my hotel at Adamson Road 4, and was glad to find a lift at the hotel. My room was nice, but hot, and I could not open the window! I felt a bit uncomfortable after the flight and even more due to the heat rash. When walking, my thighs / trousers were rubbing against the thighs – it was to be a general problem during the entire meet-up. After unpacking, I decided to take a little walk in the neighbourhood. Back in the hotel, I was a little hungry, but I was told that, if I wanted something to eat, I would have to go out again. I did not feel like going out again, so I ate bisquits and drank a cup of tea provided by the hotel room service. I could not really fall asleep before 4:30, and I woke at 7 o’clock. From my window I could see the street and the houses on the other side of the street. It was a noisy neighbourhood - being hot, people were outside talking until very late in the evening and sometimes even until the next morning. And at 7 o’clock there was a noisy vehicle outside my window – every day!

Monday 5.7: Day of the MEET-UP. It was very hot in the room. I wanted to take a shower, but there was only boiling water. I mentioned this problem at the hotel reception, and they tried to fix it, but it didn’t work for me until Wednesday. At the reception I received a note from Raphaële that she and Léa had missed the train, so instead of coming around noon, they would arrive at 15 o'clock. I had a package to send from the post office and went there. But at first I went to find the hostel “Palmer’s Lodge” at College Crescent, where I bought 24 postcards and 7 stamps. Many postcards were to replace taking pictures, as the postcard pictures are better than those taken by my one-off or “use and throw away” camera. After being at the post office, I went back to my hotel to write 7 cards. The trouble from the heat rash on both thighs made me urgently visit the nearby superdrugstore, where they sold me a “Lanacane” cream at more than 5 pounds. I was told that it would work within 24 hours. Then I went to the hostel to meet the others. Anna from Sweden was easy to recognize with her red hair. I said hallo to the Swedish girls - Anna, Sofia (Vadette) and Frida (VivalaFrida), Dutch Natascha and American Carrie (NumbersGirl) from Michigan. I used the hostel's toilet to put on the cream, and when I came out again, Pete (Tonsu) had arrived, and we said hallo. We walked to Regent Park, where some of us sat down and had pizza, while I had a sandwich. The rest – Pete, Anna and Sofia - went to find a store to buy food. Being so hot, Pete talked about taking a swim, and I said to Pete that I would be delighted to GIVE him a push so that he could TAKE a swim in Regent's Park boating lake. After all life is about GIVE and TAKE. I wanted to take the tube or a bus back and was joined by Pete and one more. Back in Swiss Cottage, I wanted to find out whether "the French girls" had arrived, and Pete came with me. At the hotel reception we were told that the French girls had arrived, and I was given a direct number from my room to the room of the Chevallier sisters. I talked to Béatrice, and we agreed to have breakfast at the hotel next morning. When I was talking to Beatrice over the phone, Raphaële and Léa knocked on the door. Pete entertained them, while I spoke to Béatrice. I said hallo to Raphaële and Léa, and we talked a little. Pete went back to the hostel, whereas Raphaële, Léa and I arranged to meet an hour later after a shower. When meeting again, we ran into the Chevallier sisters. The 4 French girls and I went to the hostel, and the French girls met the others. Pete told me that he and Anna had been to the pub – I would have loved to join them. We took the tube towards Piccadilly Circus. Pete left us at Green Park for Kent. We were at a nice pub in London, and I had shrimps, avocado, salad / lettuce and a little glass of beer. Very nice, and I slept tight.

Tuesday 6.7: TOURIST DAY. I woke up at 7 next morning. I had breakfast at the hotel each morning – and this morning at 8 o’clock I was joined by Béatrice and her sister Isabella – it was very nice. The heat rash was troubling me, but tourist day - including a sightseeing bus trip and a cruise on river Thames - would not involve so much walking. I went to the hostel and had a chance to use one of the free computers there. I read Pete's funny summary of the first day - he mentioned the "GIVE a push and TAKE a swim". Entering the sightseeing bus, each of us received earplugs so that we could hear what the tour guide said. We managed to sit on the upper deck of the bus – out in the free air, which was very nice. We went off the bus and had lunch in a park. Later we were on a cruise on river Thames down to Tower Bridge with a very funny tour guide who worked for free. At one point he showed us an enormous building full of windows. He called it "the windows cleaners' training centre". He said something about many languages such as “Finnish, Scottish and rubbish”. We took the same boat back, but it was a new tour guide - not quite as funny. We were standing at Piccadilly Circus for a long time, and I had to sit down. We were waiting for a young, sweet, quiet American girl, Kaleigh. We went back to Swiss Cottage and to a nearby pub “Northern Star”, where the semi-final between the Netherlands and Uruguay was shown. The Netherlands won 3:2, so Natascha was very pleased. Many of us had dinner at the nearby Indian restaurant – I had salmon and Kingfisher beer at 15.50 pounds. There I talked a lot with Béatrice and Isabella Chevallier.

Wednesday 7.7: SHOPPING DAY. I skipped shopping feeling absolutely NO PROGRESS in relation to my heat rash, on the contrary - it had become bigger. I tried to phone my doctor in Denmark, but each time I heard the busy tone and the last time the answering machine. I seriously considered going home to Denmark to see my doctor. At the reception they gave me the address and phone number to a doctor situated at Adelaide Road – but that could be expensive, so I was recommended to go to the Free Royal Hospital. I decided to try the local pharmacy again – it opened at 10 o'clock. I described my problem to the pharmacist, who had not been there on Monday. He said it was “heat rash – many people have this problem right now due to the heat”. He gave me “a new and better cream” called Hydrocortisone, also at the price of over 5 pounds. I posted my cards to Denmark and tried to get some Coldplay stamps, but they were sold out. Then I bought a birthday card and some postcards in a nearby souvenir shop and then had an omelette at an Italian restaurant. I had made an arrangement with Léa and Raphaële to watch the World Cup semifinal together – Germany vs. Spain. We sat at a table just inside the pub. I rooted for Germany, whereas Raphaële and Léa rooted for Spain. I had a pint of beer, and decided not to drink the last swallow of beer before the end of the match thinking that if I did, it would mean bad luck for Germany. Suddenly the waiter took my glass: “Oh no”, I said as the waiter walked away with my glass, not hearing me. Spain had a free kick or throw in – I knew what that meant: GOAL for Spain. We saw Sofia and talked to her for a while. Most of the coldplayers were watching the World Cup semifinal from another room in the pub or from the terrace. After the football match Raphaële, Léa and I had dinner at the Indian restaurant.

Thursday 8.7: Originally called “FREE DAY”, but quickly changed to day trip to KENT. It was lovely weather, and it was a nice trip by the Tube to Victoria Station and by an overground train to Otford Station. Pete arrived a little later than our train. He took us for a nice walk in the lovely village, Otford and past Otford’s village duck pond. He meant to throw me into the water, but somehow I managed to avoid it - but I must admit that it had been hot enough for a swim. We sat on a bench, and some pictures were taken. After that we had a very nice lunch at a lovely restaurant: Rumpsteak and strawberries. I had one pint of beer. After lunch Pete drove us to KNOLE House called “England’s largest house”. Pete had to drive twice as his father’s car could only have 3 passengers plus the driver at a time. The largest house was about to close for the day when we got there. There were a lot of deers there and many trees. We were sitting on the grass on a sort of blanket. At one point ANNA climbed up high in a tree, in only a few seconds. Pete was asked to join her, but said no. He gave 3 reasons: 1) He was wearing sandals. 2) He was afraid of trees! 3) He was afraid of heights. Much too soon we had to go back home. Again in 2 rides Pete drove us to the station. During the rides he played Coldplay for us. And on the way back he said: “I have to play VIVA LA VIDA for you, Nancy”. And he did. That was like HEAVEN ON EARTH for me. We did not catch the train we had planned, but we made it close. We had a nice trip back again. It was such a LOVELY DAY – the best day during the stay. I was troubled by the heat rash on the trip back to Swiss Cottage just as I thought that it was getting better.

Coming back to my hotel, I knocked on the door to Léa and Raphaële’s room to tell them that the hostel group would leave in only 20 minutes time. Léa opened the door, as Raphaële was taking a shower. I had decided not to go, because I wanted to put on some cream and let it dry. We talked about what we had experienced so far. The next day Raphaële and Léa planned to go to Violet Hill and then to the Bakery and Beehive. Mark would take them there as he was coming home for the week-end to visit his parents. I had already decided to skip the ARCHITECTURE / MUSEUM DAY, so I asked if I could join them to see Violet Hill. “Of course – and the hospital is conveniently close to the Bakery, should you want to go there.” We ended up eating something at McDonald’s before saying goodnight.

Friday 9.7. ARCHITECTURE / MUSEUM DAY. I had breakfast with Béatrice and Isabella Chevallier. At 10, I went to the pharmacy to get something to protect my rash from the rubbing. If that did not work, I would go to the Free Royal Hospital situated close to the Bakery. Raphaële helped me fix the gauze with tape so that it would sit quite smoothly. But the rubbing when I walked made it fall off at Violet Hill. That meant the hospital for me, and Raphaële was so nice to accompany me there.

The French girls and I met with Mark at our hotel, and we went by tube to a station with a little Beatles store (Belsize Park Station, I think). I looked at the Beatles items there, but didn’t buy anything. I asked and was told that there was a bigger Beatles store around Baker Street. If I wanted to see the Beatles museum, I had to go to Liverpool. We saw Abbey Road and people’s graffiti there. After 2 weeks, the graffiti is washed off, Mark told us. After Abbey Road we went to Violet Hill - a nice, quiet place where we had sandwiches and listened to Violet Hill and other Coldplay songs. Pictures were taken in front of the Violet Hill sign. We went to the Bakery and the Beehive, and from there I went to the hospital accompanied by Raphaële. We waited one hour – not bad. The doctor asked several questions, looked at the rash and then wrote a paper with the name of a lotion to be collected Saturday between 9 and 12. Raphaële and I took the bus back to Swiss Cottage - it was Friday, early in the evening.

Saturday 10.7. COLDPLAY DAY. We met at the hostel, and I said hello to Russian Vera (Verussia) and her brother Peter. A little later we all – both the hotel and the hostel groups - met at the hostel to go to the Bakery area, and from here I went to the hospital accompanied by Raphaële to pick up my lotion at the pharmacy. The French group waited in front of the Bakery for Mark who had offered to take them to the picnic Saturday. He was showing the Bakery and the Beehive to other coldplayers who were also going to the picnic. I went back to the hostel to join the hostel group there at 13 o’clock. I also had some stuff stored at the hostel (Dancake and Anthon Berg chocolates). Anna informed us that Pete could not make it due to a close relative being seriously ill. We were all sad to hear this. I had looked forward to a swim with Pete, because the weather was so hot: 32 degrees Celsius – but it wasn’t to be. It was very hot, and our feet were hurting. I felt that we walked for ages. We did not manage to find the group of coldplayers taken to the picnic by Mark. But we had a nice day: We had sandwiches and shared candy at a shadowy place. Later we were flying with Frida's new butterfly kite – for at least 1½ hours, I think - and we listened to Coldplay's Parachutes on its 10th anniversary. Anna and Natascha climbed a tree, whereas Sofia tried, but failed. And we wrote messages to Coldplay. Later we had dinner at a nice restaurant called ASK after seeing Miller eating at a nearby restaurant “pizza Express” near Belsize Park Station. Miller’s picture was taken and posted on the coldplayer thread. German Katja and her daughter Anna contacted Swedish Anna to hear where we were, and a little later they joined us at restaurant ASK, and Katja also wrote a message for Coldplay. We said goodbye to Katja and her daughter Anna and went back to Swiss Cottage.

Sunday 11.7: FLEE MARKET SHOPPING. I had the luck that Vera and her brother Peter with parents were waiting for a taxi on the bench outside my hotel so that I could say goodbye to them. I went to the hostel around 9.50. As I found out that a lot of walking was involved, I chose to stay at home to take care of my sour feet – now overshadowing my heath rash! I met with Raphaële and Léa. We talked about the picnic day and then had something to eat at the SUBWAY. Raphaële and Léa went to Piccadilly Circus, whereas I went to the hostel and used the computer there. A little later the hostel group came back. We went to dinner at the nearby pub and had nice food (I had pizza and French fries) on the terrace while watching the World Cup football finals between the Netherlands and Spain. We had decided to root for the Netherlands, but SPAIN won as predicted by Paul, the octopus-oracle.

Monday 12.7: Quiet time before noon. I stayed at home and made use of the hostel’s laundry facilities. I met the hostel group at the hostel at 15, and we went back to Hampstead Heath and had another lovely afternoon there. Frida’s butterfly kite went flying again. After Hampstead Heath we walked for a while. Later we went to the Dublin Castle where we met Anna aka. SueDeNimes. There was an exchange of big hugs and smiles. We were sitting close to some doors that opened constantly - and each time the music was so loud that I couldn't communicate with Anna or anyone else. We asked a nice guy – Eddie - to take our picture. He turned out to be a musician (the bassist) from a group called Capelle. He gave us a “Capelle reserve note” with the web address: http://www.myspace.com/capellesound. On the other side of the note was written the same web address and then this text: “Due to a global recession, everyone’s hurting a little. To ease the burden, we’re offering a Capelle track for free! Just email [email protected] and we’ll send you a free MP3!!” Eddie also introduced us to the rest of the band. One of the band members had birthday. Outside Anna wrote a message to Coldplay. It was a really nice evening. The others walked me to my hotel, and Carrie went inside to find out if my hotel had a room available for the last night when the others had gone home, but unfortunately there was no vacant room, so Carrie stayed at the hostel and was lucky enough to use the same bed as the other nights.

Tuesday 13.7; FREE DAY. At 11 o’clock I went to the hostel and saw Sofia (Vadette) coming down the stairs. The Swedish group had decided to do some shopping, and I was invited to join them, which I did. We went to a GIFT / SOUVENIR SHOP where we all bought several items and then to Waterstone bookstore. I didn’t buy any books, even though I normally adore bookstores, but I was not in the right mood. Then we went to the Covent Garden and had Ken's cookies. On the way back my Oyster card had no more money on it, and the “assistance queue” was long. A nice lady said: “Here is my Day Travel card – I do not need it any anymore – so you can have it”. A nice gesture. Thanks to her I did not have to put more money on my Oyster card, but could buy a ticket for Heathrow on Thursday without thinking about any refund knowing that my Oyster card was empty. We had dinner at the bistro next to the Bakery – Anna, Sofia, Frida, Carrie, Natascha and me. I saw Miller come out of the Bakery. Some of the others also saw another guy come out.

Wednesday 14.7: GOODBYE. Pete came around noon to spend a few hours with us saying goodbye to most of the coldplayers leaving on 14.7. A lot of tears were shed as we said goodbye. Pete left for an hour before coming back. Carrie and I talked a little, and then we used the computers at the hostel. Carrie and I talked to Pete, and when he left after a long goodbye, Carrie and I wanted to take one last stroll down the Fleet Road. Passing the Bakery a fellow that Carrie had noticed the day before, came out. We had dinner in Belsize Park at the Pizza Express restaurant where Miller had his dinner the other night. At first, we sat outside in the sun, but suddenly it was cloudy, and the wind was very cold, so we went inside. Here Carrie told me that she had overheard some guys talking about “only 2 of the guys are working in the studio” and “he is expected back next Wednesday or Thursday”. Their conversation might have to do with Coldplay. The fellow who walked out of the Bakery, passed the restaurant, carrying a bag of food. I had a nice pizza. After dinner we walked to my hotel – we agreed to meet at my hotel the next morning at 6:15 UK time. Then I went inside to pack my luggage – a suitcase and bags. Later Raphaële and Léa came to my room to say goodbye and exchange butterflies. Raphaële and Léa did not stay long, because I was very tired.

Thursday 15.7: Up early. Carrie came to my hotel, and together we took the tube heading for Heathrow terminal 3 (for me) and terminal 4 (for Carrie). My plane was 20 minutes delayed, but landed at Copenhagen Airport at the scheduled time. Perfect timing home with both the metro and the regular train. Home at 14:20 central European time.

DESPITE MY HEAT RASH WHICH TROUBLED ME SO MUCH, I WAS HAPPY TO HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THE COLDPLAYER MEET-UP AND TO HAVE MET SO MANY WONDERFUL COLDPLAYERS. I HOPE TO MEET YOU AGAIN.

THANKS TO JULIE (JULIEJULLE) FOR ORGANIZING THE MEET-UP.

THANKS TO ANNA ELISABETH FOR TAKING OVER JULIEJULLE’S PROJECT AS UNFORTUNATELY, JULIEJULLE COULD NOT PARTICIPATE.

THANKS TO PETE FOR HIS PARTICIPATION IN THE MEET-UP – NOT LEAST FOR BEING OUR HOST IN KENT AND FOR SHOWING US OTFORD AND THE KNOLE HOUSE AREA.

Thank you so much for your lovely diary, Nancy!

I'm getting ready for work and could only scan through it - but what I read was super lovely.

Thanks again

What a wonderful, detailed, write-up Nancy!!

Bless you, you brought back many wonderful memories, and also reminded me of so many moments I wish I had been able to be with you all, but thanks to Julie and to Anna I could spend some really lovely times with most of you, and all because of Julie's original idea I know have many more true friends from around the world :sunny:

'...every moment was so precious...' Absolutely!

I am so glad that people enjoyed the day out in the area where I grew up. I was worried in advance that it might be dull for some or all of you, but everyone seemed to have fun, and it was such a pleasure to welcome you all here. Alright, we didn't see a ghost, but we made it close! :P

Just a reminder to everyone, that if you want to see inside the house (as we were too late to visit) it's in the movie The Other Boleyn Girl (starring my sweetheart, Natalie Portman )

I'm so glad you enjoyed Viva in the car Nancy, played especially for you, and thank you so much again for your summary of the trip. In particular your story of Violet Hill has made me want to play the whole album, for the first time in perhaps a year!!

The entire time spent with you all was tremendous, such a joy

Miss you all!

Pete xxx

P.S. Thanks so much to the girls for leaving me with all the leftover candy! I am now the number one uncle for my little niece and nephew!!

BUT who left me the Djungelvral?! :shocked2:

My sister, niece and nephew all tried some at the same time - you should have seen the looks on their faces! Two of them spat them out straight away. My little nephew Ethan though (1 1/2 years old), has just learned the word 'yuck' and happily practised it again and again as he kept trying the candy :laugh3:

Next time he's here I'll give him some more and video it, it was absolutely hilarious :P

I came back later and Dad was sitting in his chair chewing on something and grimacing. I didn't need to ask what it was :laugh3:

I also forgot before, who wanted the Warning Sign acoustic and A Message (remix) MP3s I played in the car? PM me please! :)
