NME Albums of the Decade

Featured Replies

Also, I don't see how "Black Holes and Revelations" made the list, but NOT "Origin of Symmetry." OoS is sooo much better.

Agreed.

And I will begrudgingly admit, I'm a bit surprised they couldn't have gotten off their high horse and put Parachutes in, as it fits. (Or Amnesiac for that matter).

But they do have albums from The Knife and Broken Social Scene and Belle and Sebastian too. I wasn't expecting those. Thus I'm happy.

I don't like it either, at least AROBTTH and Eyes Open from Snow Patrol should be there. mmm I actually like BHAR more than OOS :P

Well as I said, NO Coldplay, Travis, Keane or Snow Patrol = FAIL.:smug:

I thought it was a pretty decent list. I mean obviously not the order I like. For example I would bump You Forgot It In People up at least 50 spots :P But I think they covered most of the important albums of the decade, although personally I don't really care for the top 10 that much.

Probably the lowest I've seen Kid A and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot in any lists.

Yeah, I find it pretty weird that A Rush Of Blood To The Head isn't on the list, considering it was NME's Album of the Year for 2002.

In which case the NME is even contradicting itself!!

Ok, time for my two cents worth.

Firstly, It is probably more suprising to notice the bands that are NOT on the list rather than celebrating the ones that are on it. I agree to some degree that NME have contradicted themselves, for example the albums that they have given 9 or 10 ratings over the decade have barely featured. I fail to understand why albums like Elbow's Seldom Seen Kid, Doves' Lost Souls, Franz Ferdinand's self titled aren't on the list.

I think rather than being dickheads, NME have complied a list based on how they percieved the albums to a) change music over the decade and b) prove that they are timeless, aka. are still decent albums years after release. I think in that respect this explains why a number of decent albums have been left out.

As for the NME bias: I think that is a crap argument. Yes, the strokes and arctic monkeys feature near the top of the list, but come on, they are both amazing albums in their own right and I have no doubt will feature in the top ten of most musical institutions' compilations. If there really was some bias towards NME bands I am sure we would have seen the cribs albums (that didn't even feature) and the klaxons' album in top 10 at least.

I think their list tends to cover a coveted amount of musical genres, and not just "NME-style" sounds. Maybe the reason why Coldplay isn't on the list is because they have completely sold out to the world and the commercial radios of the planet. The albums that have been included on the list are all great albums in their own right that conform to an eclectic and varying mix of tastes... you have your indie bands, Hip/Hop-Rap, alternative, rock, punk rock etc...

I dunno, I would love to know how they voted, and whether the NME editor had the final say. I personally don't agree with the list, and nobody will, and this is the first of a million 'Greatest Albums of the decade' that will start to filter through over the next months.

My biggest gripe is why the fuck Oasis' "Don't Believe The Truth" didn't make it. Even in 90-100!!

This.

Also, I don't see how "Black Holes and Revelations" made the list, but NOT "Origin of Symmetry." OoS is sooo much better.

Yeah Black Holes and Revelations is basically shit. Origin of Symmetry is a lot better.

Becuase Black Holes and Revelations is way better :P

Lame list.

:inquisitive:

Or the thread creator's or yours, either, so butt out.:smug:

Anyway, as I said - NME = Non Music Entity.

The simple fact is that any such list that doesn't include any Coldplay albums cannot be taken seriously in any shape or form.;)

Butt out? It's a public forum, no.

It may come to a shock to you, but there are better bands then Coldplay. Now just because I said there are better doesn't mean I'm betraying them, same goes with anyone else saying something agianst them. It's a fucking opinion, doesn't mean I've broken up the band. It's NME's list so they are most likely going to put their favorite bands high. Although there are some parts I disagree with it's still a pretty decent list. There's no need to keep bashing it over and over agian, we heard you the first time.

Crest shut up it sucks

NME are a bunch of ******s who wish they were Pitchfork but don't have the balls for it.

I tried to restore some logic. People, understand what this thread is about! :P

If it did that, the board would die.

Well I disagree. That list seems very iffy to me.:dozey:

The Libertines, Dizzee Rascal and Babyshambles? What planet are these people on?:stunned:

Mark!

Remember me? :cheesy:

I'd just like to say

Mark's opinion

and

NME's opinion

are

Not always the same

Remember our discussion about the band COLDPLAY? Similar concept ;)

OPINION = FACT

Nathan stop, I'm trying to explain to him, you're just going to confuse the poor child.

Pitchfork? Don't get me started on those jokes!

That's actually a surprisingly good list overall, if you look at the details rather than the top ten.

Of course it's an NME list, so of course NME bands are going to rank unfairly high. Almost anyone could have predicted the Libertines, the Strokes and the Arctic Monkeys before looking at this. Those are the bands that defined the magazines whole view of the decade.

But look at all the other stuff that made it. Some great stuff made the cut too, and I bet you aren't going to see most of it on more mainstream-oriented lists. Forgetting the obvious, this is a list that reminds me how cool some of the decade has been. :nice:

^ This.

I have no problem with any list so long as there is some internal consistency to it. I don't read NME, and I don't like a lot of NME bands. However, if they are going to have a "best of" list, I would expect it to be filled with a lot of bands they have written about over the decade. That appears to be the case, so I have no beef. Do I believe that this is the best 100 albums over the last decade...not even close!

In Rainbows <3

but the rest is shit

I'm Surprised!! :P

I'm Surprised!! :P

I meant the placings btw. Not the albums..apart from In Rainbows <3 :P

i think we should try and focus on all the good music that did make the list instead of the good music that didn't.

in general, I have no problem with lists like this. It can make for fun discussion. What I hate is when I hear people spit up opinions taken strictly from music magazines along the lines of NME. In other words, NME naming an album as a top 100 of the decade is in no way empirical evidence that it is. It's just one rags opinion. However, I have seen people shape their entire opinion on an artist/album based purely on what they read in magazine, especially the larger publications. You can tell because it is some tired old viewpoint that you know you've heard elsewhere. Now that bothers me!

Well that's where you're wrong.:smug:

As you said, it's a public forum, so I will keep bashing the list as much as I feel like it, and there isn't a damn thing you can do about it. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
