7Digital chief claims Rage Against The Machine will be Christmas Number One

Featured Replies

7Digital CEO Ben Drury claims Rage Against The Machine's 'Killing In The Name' could be crowned Christmas Number One this evening (December 20) ahead of The X Factor's Joe McElderry.

According to Drury the LA band clocked up 100, 000 sales yesterday (December 19).

He wrote on his Twitter page: "Judging by our sales and our market share, RATM could have sold 100,000 copies yesterday alone! Power to the people.

"I reckon RATM has done it but need to wait until 6.30pm-ish to find out."

However with a big shopping day The X Factor release was also expected to sell a large number of physical copies which are currently being added to the total sales score.

Rage Against The Machine have declared their Christmas Number One a victory over a "very sterile pop monopoly" after beating The X Factor's Joe McElderry's to the top spot.

'Killing In The Name' beat McElderry's cover of Miley Cyrus' 'The Climb' by 50,000 sales to claim 2009's festive chart topping crown.

Speaking upon hearing the news to Radio 1's Scott Mills, Rage frontman Zack De La Rocha said: "We're great, we're very very ecstatic and excited about the song reaching the Number One spot and I just want to say we want to thank everyone for participating in this incredible, organic grass roots campaign.

"It's more about the spontaneous action taken by young people in the UK to topple this very sterile pop monopoly. When young people decide to take action they can make what's seemingly impossible, possible."

He also confirmed that part of the proceeds will be donated to the homeless charity Shelter and they will make good on a promise to play a free concert in the UK next year.

"We would like to congratulate Joe and Simon (Cowell) on the Number Two single," he added.

"We intend to make right on that promise (to play) and we will get together in 2010. We will definitely be there to celebrate with everyone in the UK."

:laugh3:

it's brilliant, i went on to itunes earlier and saw it on the top there

so i googled to check if it was the official no.1

:D possibly the best christmas no.1 for years.

( i don't like RATM, but you know..)

It's a sad day when manufactured pop diminates the Christmas charts. It's an even sadder day when people buy this song, not on the basis of its quality (which is shite).

Still, it's a good victory. I don't think Simon Cowell will really care, he's still a rich bastard

And besides, his act will get number one next Sunday.

My god UK fans are delusional.

It's funny, nothing more.

ITS MORE THAN FUNNY

My god UK fans are delusional.

I'm not a huge fan of the song (although it is growing on me :D), but it's 100 times better than the manufactured rubbish that X Factor churn out each year.

I couldn't give a monkey's either way. The Christmas number one is now totally meaningless.;)

To all the campaigners I just have the one thing to say:

Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me :P

Indeed, Dave, quite lulz. The campaigners kinda shot themselves in the foot there.

i recall seeing an article in The Guardian's website that they did achieve their goal. the song is indeed the #1 song for X'mas...

And they had to play it on Christmas TOTP as a result. It sounded well out of place, although most of the other stuff played on there was garbage too!:dozey:

All in all, the show was a total dead loss.

Still, it's a good victory. I don't think Simon Cowell will really care, he's still a rich bastard

Simon wanted this, its why he spoke out about it.

Gains: Sony get more record sales, Joe McElderry's name is actually known in the US, Joe actually has something distinctive to know him by, meaning he might stand some chance of actually making it as an artist (I highly doubt it though, hes just not interesting enough to have a career)

Losses: An X Factor contestant missed out on Xmas no.1? It doesnt matter, nobody cares about the no.1 and it makes no difference whether its at Xmas or not.

The whole campaign is a load of crap.

Nobody gives a fuck about Sony's sales though, that's far from the point. It's more of a fingers up to manufactured false shitty bland pop music.

Really it's an average singer covering a song, why the fuck should that be #1? It's not attacking the music industry in general just the idea that X Factor is guaranteed #1 sales.

Sorry Nathan, but all you proved is that the British record buying public are sheep.
