The 5th Mixtape Exchange (Tapes In First Post)

Featured Replies

Ok, so I had planned on writing my review yesterday but I was very busy and got home very late. But I wanted to have something written so who ever made my tape wouldn't think I didn't like it or something. I guess I recieved my tape on Tues. Not sure. Sorry, I don't have the best memory.

Thanks so much to whoever made my mix for me. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. The goal was accomplished because I didn't recognize any of the artists on my tape except for Coldplay. You picked a gem! Chris's vocals are gold. And can I just say wow! 21 songs! This person must have done this before. I thought all the songs meshed well together. The tape as a whole seemed to flow really well. Track 6 definitely stood out of course. The song title escapes me at the moment though. Forgive me.

I loved the live track on this mix. Live music is always better than studio and so it was a nice treat to get a live track on the tape. Very eclectic mix. Very different from the music I usually listen to and am familiar with so good job! Overall I was pleased.

Here's the link for anyone who wishes to dl it:

Thanks fellow mixtaper. And to whoever recieved mine, I wish I was better at this sort of thing. This was a first time for me so I suppose I played the safe route. I plan on only getting better.

:awesome: best Sigur ros album along with ( ) .

Agreed.

To my mistry mixtape-er (You know who you are)

I've been listening to my mixtape on the commute to school and really enjoying it, it's been a hectic week and i've got a free period tomorrow where I shall sit down and write my review.

Oddly, the person who my mixtape is for does not appear in this thread, nor anywhere on the forum. :inquisitive:

Goodnight.

They probably changed their name.

Woah That's mine! - altho you weren't the person I was supposed to make it for  I guess the person who's name I was given must have bowed out or gone awol...but no matter....soooo glad it got reviewed

I'm glad you liked it overall - I guess I did go for a Brit-rock kinda feel, the criteria for the selections was that the songs had to be rocky and upbeat, with some good energy :D And yeah the crazy frog thing was there to throw ya... ;) it's a good job you mentioned it cos I might not have recognised my tape otherwise (ssh, don't tell anyone, but I haven't been reading *all* of the reviews..:uhoh:... :P).

So, the tracklist:

01. I liked this one :nice: Something about "fucking in the alley" and I was like ooooohhhh :surprised: I knew I was gonna like it... I also enjoyed the chorus very much makes me wanna get up and throw my hands in the air and dance -----> Very upbeat sex song, I'm guessing, hahah

Julie & The Moth Man - Kasabian 2009 (b-side from Underdog single)

Yup, very sexy, very upbeat...incredibly this was a b-side (I love when bsides end up being really good) but they've recently been using it as a set-opener on tour. It's amazing int it? I love the lyrics - I am the mothman, I wanna eat right thru your clothes :D

|

|

02. Mew, right? Funny story: I just got this album like a few days ago :p

New Terrain - Mew - 2009 (from album No More Stories etc)

Yup, Mew - correct! It's such a good album and this is the opening track (the one that's playable backwards and forwards, this is the forwards version!)

|

|

03. "Tell me why does the river not flow" DUN DUN DUN!!!!!! I'm strangely attracted to this song :wacky: I have reasons to believe I would not like this but yet I'm liking it...I know it makes no sense but...

The Riverboat Song - Ocean Colour Scene 1996 (from album Moseley Shoals)

haha This is a classic, fair few years old now. Amazing beginning and guitar riff, it can't fail to get your foot tapping. This was like an anthem to the weekend at the time it came out. Timeless classic

|

|

04. I like the starting beat... It sounds so familiar but I'm 100% sure I've never heard it before... I dunno, It keeps the same beat throughout but it's pretty good :nice:

Stellify - Ian Brown - 2009 (from album My Way)

Oooo glad you liked this, I was nervous about adding this, cos Ian Brown is quite an aquired taste. I think the guy is a legend, but not all his music is quite as good as it could be. The piano beginning is incredible tho & this song is really uplifting - makes me wanna go marching ;)

|

|

05. Oooooh I liked this one from the moment it started! "I dunno what to do, I dunno what to do..." Makes me think of like Disco era and I wanna dance

Learn To Lose - Hockey - 2009 (from album Mind Chaos)

American band, they sound so young & unwashed... :) I really like this album, very fresh & upbeat, but has a surprising variety of styles thru it. I think this was one of the singles, there's a couple of other good ones - Song Away is also quite disco-ey)

|

|

06. Hmmm, there's potential of me completely hating or really liking this song. It's gonna be definite grower if the latter. I mean, it's not baaaaaaaddd but

Buck Rogers - Feeder - 2001 (from album Echo Park and best of album The Singles)

I know what you mean, Feeder are one those bands you can get kinda indifferent to. This is one of their better singles, half standard rock fare, half completley nuts  If you not sure about this one, try youtubing for the acoustic version - it's very nice.

|

|

07. Very sweet song, kinda inspirational..."My light shines on!!!" I really like the Choir singing in the background <3

Movin' On Up - Primal Scream - 1991 (from album Screamadelica)

This song is stunning. The oldest track on the mix, maybe sounds a little dated but still pretty incredible. Screamadelica is one of those classic, iconic, must-own albums.

|

|

08. This is like a remake of a Christina Aguilera :o I like it... I like it very much :surprised: :guitarist:

Genie In A Bottle - Speedway covering Christina Aguilera - 2003 (from album Save Yourself)

heehee Yup a cover of Aguilera's Genie in A Bottle by short-lived Scottish band, Speedway - I think this was pretty much the only hit they had! A *huge* improvement on the original if you ask me ;)

|

|

09. Ehhh... For some reason I found it a bit annoying. It seems like something I would play when I mad and trying to trash my room from the rage hahahah!

I'll Give You Sympathy - The Rascals - 2008 (from album Rascalize)

*sigh* I'm sure there's only me on the whole planet that likes The Rascals :P Miles Kane's (of Last Shadow Puppets fame) other previous band, he's since gone solo, so this was their only album and it wasn't much of a hit. It's kinda grungey and dirty, personally I like it way better than any Arctic Monkeys album but...it's just me on that one hahaha :)

|

|

10. I WANTED TO SHOOT THE SINGER there for a little while but then all of the sudden (!) I started to like the song... And I found myself nodding my head along to it wishing I knew the lyrics so I could sing along xD

Papillon - The Airborne Toxic Event - 2008 (from album The Airborne Toxic Event)

heehee I know what you mean about the guy's voice..bit droney, bit intense...very American. I like this album tho some of the songs get a bit morose. Listen to Sometime Around Midnight tho - it's beautiful.

|

|

11. Hmm... interesting song, but I didn't like this one very much

Dreaming Of You - The Coral - 2002 (from album The Coral)

Ahhh, The Coral....much underated/underloved band. I just think their style and influences are incredibly varied, but they can be a little hit & miss. One of their early ones :shame: sorry you didn't like it..

|

|

12. Kinda soothing music, AAAAAaahhh oh oh oh!! I like it :wideeyed: Really awesome song :D :D

Action/Reaction - Choir Of Young Believers - 2009 (from album This Is For The White In Your Eyes)

These are great, saw them supporting Mew last November & loved them. Another Danish band but the singer/songwriter is half Greek too. Very beardy folk, lots of cello. Try looking for Why Must It Always Be This Way or Next Summer...both gorgeous songs :)

|

|

13. The lead singer was sorta Fleet Fox-like but the music was completely different, nevertheless, I enjoyed the song very much :nice:

Cards & Quarters - Local Natives - 2009 (from album Gorilla Manor)

I saw a blog post somewhere that likened them to the Fleet Foxes and as there are a few other bands I've liked with FF comparsions, I thought I'd give these a listen too - was not disappointed. It's a fantastic album, really good. This one was instantly my favourite track off the album (digging the percussion), but really they are all good. Kind of Fleet Foxes meets Simon & Garfunkel. Can't reccommend it enough.

|

|

14. Ooh! an acoustic guitar!...and WHOOOAAA! I <3d this song :D it's really upbeat and fun and :awesome:

Don't Look Back Into The Sun - The View covering The Libertines - 2003 (from compilation album Radio 1 Est. 1967)

Not a big fan of The Libertines & I find The View a bit hit & miss, but this cover version is fantastic. Starts quite mellow and then kicks off and then gets really wild by the end.

|

|

15. Meh. I didn't like it... at all...

Processed Waterfall - Kasabian vs. The Stone Roses - 2005 (from Green Street Hooligans soundtrack)

Waaaah. I adore this track, but I guess it's quite an aquired taste. Two of my fave bands combined into one song! The lyrics of Processed Beats by Kasabian added to the music of the very superb Waterfall by The Stone Roses. Listen to both these songs individually cos they are genious.

|

|

16. I think I know what this is... I've heard it before... omg ...omg ...It's Oasis :), right?! Omg... I love this song... I dunno if I have it... it's quiet beautiful, The Masterplan <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 Wonderful way to end the mixtape!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Masterplan - Oasis - 1995 (originally b-side from Wonderwall single, also appears on b-side compilation album The Masterplan)

Yeah, you got it. I kinda went off Oasis after the first few albums, but I still maintain this is the best song they've ever done. And it's got to be the best b-side ever too. (I had the Wonderwall single at the time and played this track more than I played the A-side) Thought it made the perfect closer.

|

Wow, I seem to have written quite an essay. Really glad you liked (most) of it.

This is the full list:

This is the d/load --> Crazy Frog presents Crazy Hits

and a d/load link for the same mix with correct tags - Tagged version

Aha! there you are! Thanks for the mixtape and don't worry about me not liking a couple of the songs... I'm a tough cookie when it comes down to it  It's been growing on me, though :smug2:

hey, i've just heard my cd and I found it to be great. It progresses quite nice.

This person put these following songs

1-bloc party-like eating glass

4-arcade fire - rebellion

6- thom yorke - atoms for peace remix

12 - outkast - bob

13- radiohead - motion picture soundtrack

once again, great! I end all of my days with motion pic soundtrack

Alright here is my review, sorry for the delay:

Unfortunately, when I opened all the songs in iTunes all the details were there. I cant complain too much because now I don't have to enter them in. My person also provided a list of the tracks, and one song was missing.

1. Slow Poison - The Bravery

Great song. I've never heard it before. THe singer reminds me a bit of Interpol or White Lies. Simple driving beat but some good synths goin' on in the background that are pretty catchy.

2. Leave It Alone - Operator Please

Nice violin intro. Female voice, pretty good. I'm pretty sure I've heard this before but I can't think of where. Catchy melody and punchy bass.

3. Cousins - Vampire Weekend

I just saw them perform a free concert in London a few weeks ago. Haha. It was a great concert even though they lost power 2 songs from the end. The did play this and it was awesome as usual. They sound amazing live, and they have some good song writing skills.

4. Oh My God - St. Vincent

Starts with a soothing plucking guitar with some bass notes to set the mood. Than a soft female voice comes in with some flutes. It's all very relaxing and mellow. Not something I would listen to often, but it's good for those times you just wanna chill out. For such a simple song, it has a deep meaning with lyrics "The drink goes in the devil comes out". Clearly talking about an abusive relationship.

5. Your Protector - Fleet Foxes

Starts with a few flutes playing. Male voice comes in and the song builds up to the chorus where all the instruments come in and the melody is oh so catchy. I love it. This song has a feel unlike any other i've really heard. It's unique and I'll have to check these guys out.

6. Summerboy - Lady Gaga

Haha oh man Lady Gaga! I still haven't decided if I think she is a man or a woman, but in this song she certainly sounds like a woman. I have to say she sounds better in this one than most of her bigger hits. It sounds more natural and it is an upbeat song. No complaints here.

7. Stylo - Gorrilaz

Never really listened to these guys. this song has a pretty nice techno beat laid down with some good melodies being sung on top of it by different singers. It's a well put together song, but it doesn;t do much for me. Not my style.

8. Vienna - The Fray

Ah yes, The Fray. I like these guys a lot. I think they have potential to go to the top tier of music. Songs like Cable Car, You Found Me, and How to Save a Life are sooo good, but this one really shows of the singers voice a bit more. It's a more mellow song dominated by vocals and piano. Really good stuff. i actually had tickets to see them in San Diego but ended up not being able to go!

9. Untitled - Yoko Kanno

Starts with some percussion, imitating something that sounds like something running. Thats what I get from it. This i more of an orchestral work. Strings and brass come in and the percussion soon evolves into an underlying techno beat. It sounds awesome with the brass on top of it. Im a trumpet player so soundtrack stuff like this is really appreciated by me. I love the soaring melody from the violins. It sounds kind of like a video game soundtrack. definitely an interesting piece and fun to listen to. Some of it sounds sinister, while others sound heroic. it ends on some ugly notes to leave you feel tense.

10. For You - Coldplay

Enough said. Great song clearly. Had it already but always nice to listen to.

:awesome: best Sigur ros album along with ( ) .

I'd say it's tied with, or just behind Agaetis Byrjun for best.

2. Your Ex-lover is Dead by Stars

3. Quiet Houses by Fleet Foxes

4. Revival by The Allman Brothers Band

6. July, July! by The Decemberists

14. We're Away by Elbow

15. To Build A Home by The Cinematic Orchestra

and a link if anyone wants it: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CKLH8TXC

We're Away! wonderful bonus track :awesome:

no one has posted a review of my mixtape yet :/

Same here :\

Sorry this took a while.

Here's my review. Thanks for the person who sent this. This truly made my day!

1. What a way to start a mix. I love string instrumentals. This track could be a soundtrack to a great adventure movie. The string solo at the end is familiar, I just don’t where I heard that.

2. Choir voices. I think this is a continuation of the first song because of the same melody. The singers sure do love the orchestra. I love the energy exuded in this one. The string parts are great. The harmony between male and female vocals are terrific. I would love to know more about the artist. Could this be an indie artist?

Track1/2: Instrumental 1 and Love of an Orchestra by Noah and the Whale.

I'm really glad you liked this. Noah and the Whale was a band I discovered over christmas, and I really wanted to start with one of their tracks from the new album 'The First Days of Spring' which is a fantastic album.

3. Latin-style guitar work. I’m liking this one. Full of energy. Could be Rodrigo y Gabriela. I’m not sure though as I’m not too familiar with the artist. The combination of wicked guitars and vibrant drums and quieter parts give texture to this track. Though it’s instrumental, I did not find it boring at all.

Yep. Hanuman - Rodrigo Y Gabriela.

4. From very energetic, this track is very mellow acoustic. The voice is familiar, for a while he reminds me of the guy from Snow Patrol, but I’m certain its not him, because of the second voices and harmonies. I kind of like it, even though it’s not my most favorite style of music. Ok, at the end of the song, I’m beginning to think the artist is Jason Mraz(?) Hope I’m right.

People Should Smile More - Newton Falkner.

The best ginger dreadlocks in the music buisness.

5. Ooh, those voices. Like the second one, but this time more folky. It something that could have been sung in the sixties or seventies. I’m sure it’s from a recent group. But they’re surely doing a good job making this one a bit retro. The song is calming and soothing, maybe because of the great harmonies. This is the sort of music that I would listen from time to time. Guitar solos are great too, it provides depth. Nice fade out in the end. I would like to know who’s responsible for this song!

New Slang - The Shins.

You'll have to thank the scrubs soundtrack for this one.

6. Another slower song. Sort of like the fourth song. But slower. However, come 0:40 seconds or so, the tempo picked up finally into a pop-rock/alternative effort. I’m not much of a fan of the voice, it’s kind of thin and raspy. But I really like the rock elements in this one. I didn’t expect that initially. I really thought it will be mellow all throughout.

Just Looking - Stereophonics

7. Weird music at the start, with choir-like male voices. It reminds me of Kammerflimmer Kollektief, but I’m sure it’s not because though the lyrics (?) are from a different language (African perhaps?). Despite that, there’s something mysterious and dark about the melody, like a sense of foreboding. I couldn’t really understand anything, but I like it. I imagine myself listening to this while having coffee on a warm evening.

Cloudless - Peter Gabriel.

I thought this track would be a nice fusion of some world sounds. Peter Gabriel has done some top collaberations with artists all around the world.

8. It starts heavy. Quite lively. Then it became sort of psychedelic. Maybe it’s because of the synths. Then there’s this voice. I’m digging the voice, really. The accent is quite nice, is it British? Reminds me of the good new UK bands. The melody gives a positive vibe. Makes me happy. Lol. It went a bit softer in the middle, which is a nice transition. Then it finished strong. I like this song.

Lights Out For Darker Skies - British Sea Power.

A UK indie band with a cracking self titled album.

9. A combination of strings and piano. This song has a great happy energy in it. Sadly, I’m not too fond of the voice. The vocals remind me of Okkervil River, but it’s softer and I guess, weaker. However, I appreciate the melody. I’m sucker for piano and strings.

Paper Ships - Young Republic.

An american indie band which I saw at a world music festival two years ago.

10. Vampire Weekend definitely. The style is unmistakeable. The ultimate summer song for me. Beach, surf, warm wind, pina coladas...life is good! LOL. I truly enjoy this song, thanks for adding one that I am able to identify with. A-Punk!

Yep. A-Punk. This track was put on my mixtape last year, and I love it. Completeley agree about the summer sounds.

11. The sound of birds at the start made me think of ambient music. But there are strings here! And the voice! Is this a traditional song? About the good times in England? This might be my favorite in the lot, the voice alone tempted me to google the artist. But I won’t. I want to preserve the suspense. Thanks for adding this one, I would love to know more about the artist.

Hard Times Of England Retold - Billy Bragg, The Young Coppers and The Imagined Village

I'm relived you liked this. The singer is the english poet Billy Bragg. The band 'The Imagined Village' is a collaberation of artists who are reinventing english folk music for modern times. As you can hear in the lyrics, the hard times of old england now involves houses being brought by city folk and supermarkets destroying farmers livelyhoods.

12. Simple guitars at the opening, and maybe, accordion (?) The voice is very familiar, I could not place it at this time, though. I’m racking my brains in this one. I’m sure I’ve listened to this artist before, but it’s embarrasing that I can’t place it.

Mr Jones (Live from New York) - Counting Crows.

I love the originial version of Mr Jones, but this live version is superb, yes it is an accordian in the background.

13. Good female vocals. A bit country I think. Then there’s this male vocals. Harmonies are nice. I love the interplay of low and high voices here, provides texture. It picks up near the middle, then it became quieter again. Not a boring song at all. Not my favorite, but it’s decent.

It's A Beautiful Thing - Ocean Colour Scene.

A british britpop band from the 90's. Chose this track as I thought the mixtape could do with a duet.

14. Strings that reminds me of Owen Pallett is always a good thing. But this one’s grander, like it’s another movie soundtrack. Then it became a bit dark, like stuff that Muse does. Is this Muse? The voices remind me of such band, plus the eerieness and orchestral elements in this one.

Exogenesis: Symphony Pt.1 Overture - Muse.

Yep. Muse. I was given their new album for my birthday, and it's supurb and suprprised by the quality of the Symphony at the end.

15. Smokey-jazz sounding female vocals. Kind of slow, but that’s the point. Sorry, it’s a bit bland for me. Maybe I’m not just into this kind of music.

Nobody's Fault But Mine - Beth Rowley

I wasn't sure about incliding this track, but I thought I would include a few more female vocals. I problably should have put Florence + The Machine in instead.

16. Church bells and sad instrumental. It’s very short and I was not able to make a great impression of it.

Instrumental II - Noah and The Whale.

I thought it would be nice to close the mixtape with another instumental. This track actually leads on from Love of An Orchestra.

Thanks for this mixtape! I totally enjoy the experience. I like many of the songs!

6. Just Looking - Stereophonics

I did not recognize that it is a Stereophonics song! I like "Dakota", but I wasn't too thrilled with this. However, having known the artist already, I will listen to it again.

11. Hard Times Of England Retold - Billy Bragg, The Young Coppers and The Imagined Village

Honestly, I was not able to pay attention to the lyrics to find out that it is more recently-made track. :)

Thanks for posting the track list! :D

AHA!! YES!!! With Jay's help I've finally been able to access my mixtape, review tomorrow!!!

AHA!! YES!!! With Carla's help I've finally been able to access my mixtape, review tomorrow!!!

[/rephrase]

I want someone to review my tape

And I want to know who made mine :wacky:

Track 1 ****

What an awesome intro! Is this The Fray?

I can recognize Isaac Slade's voice but I couldn't be too sure because he didn't really emphasize his 'H' in this track.

I'm not sure though, but sounds like him.

But anyway this is such a decent track.

Track 2 **

An acoustic, sounds good. Sounds like Corrine Bailey Rae or Norah Jones.

However it's rather forgettable. I already forgot the tunes.

Track 3 **

I personally think it's just the same as the previous track though I've been listening to it like 4 times.

Sounds like pop-ish a bit. Don't really like it. Sorry.

Track 4 ***

A good low tone, but I still think it sounds so similiar as Track 2 and Track 3!

But anyway, this one is better.

Track 5 *****

Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah! My favorite so far! Great choice!

Track 6 ***

I can hear John Mayer's husky voice here. Am I right?

I guess the title is 'Father and Daughter'? :uhoh: :P I like it.

Track 7 ***

Acoustic again. But this one is a fine duet track and the lyrics are good as well.

Happy to lay here

Just happy to be here

I'm happy to know you

Play me a song

Your newest one

Please leave your taste on my tongue

Track 8 ****

Finally not an acoustic. :P But it's still a slow song indeed.

The phrases of "sort it sort sort it" is so memorable!

Track 9 ****

I LIKE! The piano at the beginning sounds so lovely, reminds me of the old Coldplay.

I really would like to know who's the singer though! Awesome!

Track 10 **

Great piano for the first 2 minutes, but it's just too long and 'stretched'. Sorry.

Track 11 ***

Another Jeff. Lover Should Have Come Over.

I don't hate it but I don't love it either. Neutral.

Track 12 *****

OMG THIS ONE IS AWESOME!!! Optimized duration, great lyrics, nice tunes, great classical voice!

Hold on to people that slipping/(sleeping?) away

Track 13 *****

Glen Hansard. Nice choice for an ending.

Raise your hopeful voice you have a choice

I already had this song on my laptop, but well it feels different to listen to it in a playlist that is not mine :P

This is such a mellow mixtape which is entirely mellow and compiled with nice acoustic tracks. I like the whole mixtape, now I'm listening to it for the 5th time. :cheesy:

I want the track-listing  Thanks for the mix!

PS: I'm still a music noob, so my review is rather vague.
