why else would he voice his dislike, coldplay are ace, as a creator of excellent and sometimes similar music himself i'm sure he see's how good they are, and yeh, i reckon he's jealous of the ease with which chris writes such excellent material

Well no matter what I say you won't change your mind, but I'll say it anyway.

Not everyone is open minded to other music. Some people (like Mr. Yorke) are what is called music elitist; they believe certain music is quality and the rest is shit. He doesn't think Coldplay make great music, and a lot of other people agree with him. Just because you think it's impossible not to like them, doesn't mean that's true for everyone in the world.

And I don't think he's jealous of anything involving Chris's material as 1. he hates Coldplay's style (once called them 'cheap pop') and 2) He's been writing far more successful, far more musically advanced, and imo far better music for a lot longer than Chris Martin.

Thom Yorke is a narcissistic prick who constantly puts down other music. But that doesn't mean he's jealous of anyone, and it doesn't take away from his own brilliance.

sure, but the gems are drying up for him imo and i'm sure that narcs him, plus I would imagine he doesn't like the attention lavished on chris or the "alpha songwriter" status

but can i just say, despite it being a 7 year old quote, that i'm sort of surprised he said that he was worried for them. clearly coldplay have dealt with the limelight pretty well - as we all know. but it is surprising to me that he even thought to care.

I agree with you.

At first, I thought it was a quote from an interview from, say, this year. THAT threw me off completely.

I believe that's it. How do Radiohead think about Coldplay? "Meh."
I wish I could remember where it was from, I think it was in about the same era as this thread's quote, but there was an interview Thom did once where he mentioned Coldplay were part of the reason he got away from using proper singing and that beautiful falsetto voice of his for a while.

He said that when he started hearing bands like Travis and Muse and then Coldplay and people were comparing them to him (remember falsetto was still a novelty 10 years ago) his reaction was something along the lines of a shocked "I sound like that?!" He said it psyched him out so much he didn't dare do any real singing like he did in the Bends days but instead started using his voice more like one of the instruments, trying to bury it under everything else or change how it sounded. (The raindrops...the raindrops...) I don't remember exactly what he said, but it made me feel really sorry for him. :embarrassed: I'm glad Nigel helped him find his voice again. :nice:

^ Wow that's some interesting information. And yes I would have felt sorry for him, too. I mean, it seems like he really worried about this, almost too much :uhoh:

that just makes him sound like a jackass, now I like the guy and his music but he is really uptight, he needs to stop being so anal.

THIS ^

NO he is n't. He was referring like to how awful fame is, when you start being famous for being famous. He was like feeling sorry because they were going to become a cliché. And he was right. And what does Thom thinks of Coldplay? Well I think he is like indifferent.

He just meant fame sucks, you people are bad at this.

From what I can tell Radiohead don't hate Coldplay with a fiery passion but there isn't, like, any reason for them to like them.

The gems are drying up? In Rainbows was wildly successful, the band is as popular as ever. And I don't think it would 'narc' him that someone else is having success anyway. And since when is Chris an "alpha songwriter"? That one made me laugh.

Sara took my answer. :disappointed: Thommeh Yorkeh for teh waffles. :wacky:

Do you have sympathy for Chris Martin: very hand-on-his heart active in the Make Trade Fair campaign but necessarily lives a bit of a Hollywood lifestyle, and drives a big car?

'I don't drive a big car, I'll give you that. Um.' A pause. 'No one's going to come out of this dirt-free; I don't come out of it dirt-free. It's basically [about] having to make a decision whether to do nothing or try to engage with it in some way, knowing that it's flawed. It's convenient to project that back on to someone personally and say they're a hypocrite. It's a lot easier to do that than actually do anything else. And yeah, that stresses me out, because I am a hypocrite. As we all are.'

I found an interesting qoute by Thom, its funny and kinda sad how he refuses to acknowledge Chris

the interview is here http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2006/jun/18/9

How does being insecure make you a jackass? Maybe I didn't remember it exactly right, but the reason I remembered it at all was because I related to it so much in a way- the only person in the world we never really see is ourself. Sure there's mirrors and video and things that give us glimpses, but we can never percieve ourselves the way others do, we can only piece together hints and hope that the people around us aren't leading us astray.

It must be 100 times worse if you're in the public eye. Some pesonalities can shrug and get on with it anyway. Some freak out and spend fortunes on stylists and surgery. A few are brave enough to admit they have rough patches and question themselves. I was in the middle of several years of really bad writers block at the time so what he said meant something to me. Eye of the beholder I guess.

Perhaps you and several other people in this thread need to stop being so anal too, we can all be accepting of each other's taste and not so provocative about things, lest we get into another Coldplay fans VS Radiohead fans fight.

This. Thank you.

I don't want a fight, I like both Coldplay and Radiohead, I just wanted to share a qoute with you guys, but it seems like people can't talk about stuff like this objectively so I'll quit while I am ahead.

I love Coldplay but I agree with Thom. The change they've experienced since becoming greatly famous is quite noticeable... and not for the better. It seems now it's all about moving as fast as they can and gathering as much fame as they can before they get old.

This is why I'm against VLV, they love it because it made them huge. They now have millions of new "fans" who couldn't name a song that isn't on VLV ..great job :dozey:

I don't think he's jaelous at all ... he was just talking about poblemes that people can have because of success ...

:)

Ha, looks like Thom was wrong.

I respect Thom Yorke and Radiohead in general (after all, I don't think we'd have Coldplay without Radiohead) but I much prefer Chris's attitude towards other artists and bands (respectful, humble, etc.) over Thom Yorke's elitist attitude. It's not a Coldplay vs. Radiohead thing for me (they've become so different over the years that I don't see the point in comparing them anymore, if ever). It's just that I prefer artists who are supportive of one another over those who act like they're better than others (*cough* Gallagher brothers *cough*).

Sharing a quote is ok, flat out flamebaiting when not trying to make a legit funnies isn't.

:lol::lol:

I think they don't care about coldplay...why should them? meanwhile there's no problems between the bands, I think everything's allright :)

anyway, I really like radiohead...but Thom is really weird...

"but I'm a creep. I'm a weird" - He wrote that
