Coldplay 'better than The Beatles' says Kanye West

Featured Replies

Oh, and another thing.

Kanye West doesn´t know between, his opinion, and the publics opinion.

Take the Taylor Swift incident, in his opinion and maybe others, he thought Beyonce should have won, but it was obvious Swift would win, she was the new rising star, and blah blah.

So, just because he says so, doesn´t mean he needs to make a show out of it.

Here, we got him saying.. well this, that Coldplay are better than The Beatles.

One, and I´m make this my religion really, but that´s and OPINION not a fact, and he said it as a fact.

If you´re going to say something like that, you should say, and loudly; IN MY OPINION, Coldplay are better than The Beatles.

And In my opinion, this isn´t true, and for many reasons that Beatles fans know, and some may say that Coldplay are better, maybe some people don´t like The Beatles, and some say neither of them are good, but I guess it´s nice to know, that Kanye thinks that, for Coldplay and for some of the fans, even tho it´s such an exageration of a comparison.

Best thing I've heard all day.

So he doesn't like George Bush.

Or Taylor Swift.

And really likes Coldplay.

The guy is MUCH smarter than he looks. :D

Well, I don't know if Coldplay are really better than Coldplay. Because maybe the Beatles were not really like Beethoven or whoever but Paul McCartney is a real musician, I mean he could write a classical piece when you want. Well it was the only one in the band to have a classical music education but after several years, John and the others had a great level I guess. And I think The Beatles and Coldplay are pretty the same but not in the same period.

Oh and Anutz, I love you.

guys you need to watch a beatles documentary or read something and see the effects of their career before comparing them to coldplay.

just saying.

Indeed.

Damn, thats quite a praise, but an album with Linking Park, Kanye and Coldplay? I think thats too many people to ever agree on something, but it sure would be interesting. Brian Eno would kill himself having to put up with them all though haha

No, the Kanye was just talking about how Jay Z and Linkin Park collaborated and it wasn't expected for that combo to be any good.

It was good because LP's style at the time allowed for Jay Z to come in and do things well without it being weird... Coldplay's does not, the fool.

he dissed the JZ/LP mashed-up record. boo

Errr did not...?

I don't think anyone genuinly thinks Coldplay are better than The Beatles. Sure you can like them more but better? That's like me saying Liverpool ARE better than Barcelona even though they clearly are not.

We all know Kanye West is a mentally retarded fuck so why are people listening to him?

Double Thanks! As a Liverpool fan I completely agree. The situation here is no different. I like Coldplay more than The Beatles. Nevertheless, with only the slightest musical knowhow, I know The Beatles are better.

For the same reason Kanye is able to make such a statement

opinion =/= fact

yep. yep. coldplay is awesome, and you have to love them, but seriously...

Nice to hear praise about Chris's talent though.

Wooo! Fellow Liverpool fan in the house! You join an exclusive club!

Everything in this thread = "hehe, okay they aren't THAT good"

Well, you know, it's comparing Apples & Oranges. But the real question is, are they better than Neil Young?:P (certainly better dressed, that's a given!)

The Daily Beatle: More on Kanye, Coldplay, and The Beatles

This post on the Daily Mirror's webpage doesn't add anything of substance to the Coldplay-is-better-than-The-Beatles argument (an argument where clear thinking and levelheadedness go to die). I was amused, though, by Fiona Phillips' suggestion that the track "Fix You" would actually count in Coldplay's favor. It was the (banal and sophomoric) lyric for that very song that I cited to indict Chris Martin.

If "Fix You" is indeed attended by beauty, it's of a tempered or qualified sort. Because Martin croons vacuous lines like, "Lights will guide you home/And ignite your bones," the song's surrounding sonic grandeur isn't able to achieve full uplift; it needs engaging lyrics to do so. And through four albums and several EPs, Martin hasn't written many that fit this description.

P.S. My above criticisms notwithstanding, "Fix You" was very movingly incorporated into this TV spot for Peter Jackson's remake of King Kong. Let's be thankful that Martin's lyrics were nowhere to be found.

Could Kanye West be right about Coldplay outdoing The Beatles?

Look, I'm already bracing myself for an onslaught of abuse but I do think there's something in Kanye West's view that Coldplay are better than The Beatles.

There, I've said it.

Comments welcome, but not before you've listened to the beautifully hymn-like Fix You and can categorically say that it doesn't measure up to John Lennon at his best.

Right, I'm heading for cover...

If Fiona Phillips (I thought she was caring for her family??) said something like Politik or Lovers In Japan then the statement would have been better. Fix You is a fantastic song but is not close to their best which largely goes unnoticed. Fix You is such a generic suggestion if you know what I mean. It's one of those songs which a lazy producer dubs over a sickly "emotional" moments on shite like X Factor.

Kanye WEST is one of my favorite rapers so im just glad he said this to my FAV BAND:D

Very libellous thing to say isn't it??

made me think of this thread :P

They misspelled Bieber.

ARGUMENT IS INVALID

Oh Kanye, you’ve done it again!

You’ve got to love Kanye West. Every time he opens his mouth something brilliant comes out. Last week was no exception. I can’t figure out if Kanye purposely says things to get attention or if he’s genuinely crazy. He claimed that in 30 years time, Coldplay will be considered to have been better than The Beatles. Although I would much rather listen to Coldplay than The Beatles, Kanye West is clearly mental.

The Beatles influence on music, technology and popular culture cannot even begin to be compared to Coldplay. To suggest that in 30 years, Coldplay will have reinvented and redefined Rock n Roll, inspired an entire generation of bands and new recording technology and done something as groundbreaking as being the first band to purposely feature feedback on a record is ridiculous. In fact I think it would be almost impossible to name a band that cites Coldplay as a major influence.

Kanye’s got it so wrong

Dear Kanye West:

Is it just me or do you enjoy the taste of your own feet?

I ask, of course, because I see you have opened your yap — again — long enough to insert not one, but both feet, and you have us music aficionados up in arms.

First of all, you’ll recall that during Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, you (Mr. “Let’s Talk About Me For a While”) charged toward the 80-pound songstress, grabbed the microphone and began to spew your rhetoric about Beyonce’s Single Ladies video being overlooked. Something about it being “One of the best videos of all time!”

Whatever, Kanye. All we remember is you upstaged Swift and embarrassed yourself in front of a worldwide audience.

But this time you’ve gone too far. That’s a feat in itself, but you’ll have to agree with me that when you recently went on record as saying the band Coldplay is (and I am not making this quote up) “more talented than The Beatles” (dramatic pause), you outdid yourself. This after Coldplay frontman Chris Martin was a guest vocalist on your forgettable song Homecoming.

Better than the Fab Four, Kanye? Seriously? Give your diamond encrusted head a shake.

Here’s a test: if you were to ask 10 people on the street to name five Coldplay songs, about three in 100 could do it. However, if you were to ask those same 10 people to name five Beatles songs they would rattle them off faster than Eminem can diss his mom. And by the way Kanye, if you want complete silence, ask them to name five of your songs.

This claim irks me to no end. If you want to draw comparisons between Coldplay and John, Paul, George and Ringo, that’s fine, though the boys from Oasis won’t be too happy as they built a career trying to emulate what the four mop-topped lads from Liverpool did all those years ago. But that’s where it ends.

To even hint Coldplay is better than The Beatles is ridiculous.

That is your opinion Kanye, and we all know how much people value that. The Beatles were pioneers in music, and what they accomplished cannot and will not ever happen again.

You actually said that, “In 30 years, when Coldplay are old men, people will look back and say, ‘These guys were more talented than The Beatles.’ I have worked with Chris Martin and the man is a genius, as a performer and a songwriter, he is on the same level as John Lennon.”

How sad you had to time your unwanted comments this close to the 30th anniversary of John Lennon’s murder. If you enjoy the taste of feet so much, I think a lot of Beatles fans would be glad to place theirs firmly in your grill.

Now, I’m not saying Chris Martin and his Coldplay bandmates aren’t talented. I’m just saying they are not in the same league as The Beatles. What’s next — you’ll call Gwyneth Paltrow the new Yoko Ono?

I believe I hear a bell in the background Kanye, indicating your 15 minutes of fame are up.

Next time you decide to give the world some more of your long-winded arrogance, please do us a favour and cover that mouth with duct tape.

It’s worth mentioning that you apologized after the Taylor Swift incident. You should be as swift with an apology to Beatles fans as well.

We’re waiting, and we’re not going to let it be.
