I coincidentally heard this song, Great Big Sea's 'Safe Upon the Shore' for the first time 3 days after the earthquake in Japan. It's a story song, and about halfway though, when you begin to realize what the song is actually about it hit me rather horrifically that at that very moment that day there were thousands of people living that exact scene in real life. Now it makes me cry every time I hear it.

Not to give what happens away, but

if you live around here you learn about how the sea has moods, and they aren't always kind ones. I think this one had such an impact on me because it puts what happened so perfectly:

"The sea just sits silently, but sometimes, she does more.

And someone weeps as her love sleeps safe upon the shore."

I could only find live videos for this, so I'm posting two. This one has the best audio, but it's a solo version and the video quality is weird.

This one is the best quality and the whole band is there, but it doesn't convey the power of the song like the last one did, and his voice was off that day.

how to disappear probably takes the cake. In fact, several songs on that album would fit, but I'll leave them for now. Its not like I don't have a million sad songs, but these are among the first things I thought of.

Alive was my favourite song so i was a little hesitant to put another pearl jam song. but this, from the same album was the only song i could really think of. it is a heart breaker of a song and when they do it live its even more emotional. just live Alive this wasn't played when i saw them.

fake plastic trees, skinny love, something in the way, england and these days were all contenders but don't strike a chord like black does.

There's quite a few songs that do this. I'm going to go with my most recent example, however.

After listening to The Vaccines' debut on Friday, I fell in love with this song. Every time I put it on, it gives me a sense of great joy.

I couldn't find a normal version, so I suppose this live version will work.
