Loving Your Local Music Scene

Featured Replies

Over the past year and a bit I have really gotten into the local music scene.

For me I enjoy being able to go to shows, listen to music by people you know, hang out with them afterwards, maybe go out for a beer or talk about Captain Underpants.

While the quality of the bands may not be on par with Radiohead/Coldplay/Muse/Arcade Fire/Mew (I'm sure that everybody on this forum likes one of those bands) they can still make some pretty legit music.

Plus the shows are WAY cheaper which is awesome.

Do you go to lots of local shows?

Are some of your favourite bands ones from your town or ones from nearby that you see on a regular basis?

I guess being at a small local music festival has got me thinking about this. And also just Eddie's love for the NZ music scene. Sometimes its hard because it feels like if you share the bands people will just be WTF.

RAMBLE RAMBLE

My local music scene consists of country, which I dislike. :|

I don't listen to local bands, but I totally understand why people get into them. You need to love it simply for the music, not because you'll be able to talk about the band at work or see them on TV. I have been to a few local shows, and it seems like people enjoy forming small communities around the band. I always thought that was kind of cool. It's like, even if no one else in the world knows about them, everyone in this room is a big fan. I think it's a binding experience. Just my 2 cents...

In the past I went to see concerts in Montreux Jazz. is great concert PSB, Travis...

Now I live in Montreux and I prefer long walk or sit and watching Lake, the landscape beside the statue of Freddy Mercury.

no no no, the local music scene here sucks, most of them play the same indie pop such as I don't know, they got stuck copying Death Cab For Cutie or sometimes just play some soft rock, it's boring. They never try to play something unique or different, you can always tell "that girl is trying too much being like Fiona Apple" or "They are just like a Beatles cover band"

Everything would be easier if I'd like those bands though because they always play here and the tickets are cheap, but honestly, they suck.

^ That reminds me of last year's Homecoming bonfire parade that we have at my college every year. This one band played there, and they did a cover of one of The Beatles' songs. I don't really remember which one it was, but I remember that it was atrocious. You would have been very upset, Lore.

but you are lucky to have good music in college

in my old time at my school there were students Choir, symphony orchestra and only classical Stravinsky, Mozart...

and when I think my teacher of music committed suicide.

off Thread. one day Paul McCartney came to visit my small town unknown with his family, it's been long time in 98 .but it was the work of a friend to him and his wife Linda exposed to my city have museum of stained glass.

My local music scene is The Troggs & tribute acts

And even tribute acts have fallen off the radar lately since one of the pubs whom put up music got taken over and went "up-market"

You know, somwhere in the muddled mess of text, you brought up something that I haven't thought of until now.

I do have the fortunate honor of seeing performers in the classical world. I know, that doesn't really fit into the context of this thread, but it's something I can talk about. There are always tours of these artists-vocalists, pianists, etc.-that come here to perform for us, and we have our own performances within the School of Music that are put on, both by faculty and students. I've just started working on music for a senior recital that I'm having next fall (as is required for all music majors the semester before student teaching). Anyway, as far as that side of music goes, I get to see my fair share of people. There are even master classes that people hold beforehand. The horn studio has at least one or two during the year. Last semester, William Vermeulen (principal horn of the Houston Symphony Orchestra) came to SFA and played. OH MY GOD. He's a freak of nature.

Anyway, enough about that. I'm probably the only person who cares about that sort of thing.

wat.

in this city more old people and less young people who live yes is Jazz and classics musics because called Montreux Jazz Festival and so kitsch, sumptuous ;)

but for the days of Montreux Jazz Festival you have people of all ages and for all horizons to see the concerts

i think the 80's music of my country was better than now... Like "los prisioneros", "La ley" and i don't know...

They were part of the history of my country above all "los prisioneros"... but i don't like and i don't listening to them

I admire people who studied music and make music ;)

my best friend of class became a musicologist

and because me I never learned to make music, but I composed music without knowing a note of music. and read, never learned it's like maths. ( poor grades in class)

but have just how you called "have ear"

yes far from criticizing this music classic I have lots of classical CDs at home and classic theaters.

I think we can appreciate the musics in moods :)

:disappointed:

My local music scene is basically heavy metal and acoustic. I enjoy both types of gigs.

As far as I know, there aren't really any good local bands here. Sometimes if I see one advertised in the newspaper or something, I'll look them up (they usually have their own website or at least a facebook page) and listen to a song or two to see if they'd be worth seeing live, but none of them are much good. Mostly just wannabe country bands and "oldies" bands who seem to be oblivious to the fact that this is no longer the 1970s.

Thank you. :nice:

That's nice to hear. What does your friend do?

I wouldn't say music is like math. It involves it to an extent, yes, but it's not really math based or even number based. (That is, unless you want to talk about 20th century music, which consists of things like set theory and twelve-tone music. That's kinda mathematical in construction.)

It's nice to hear you like classical music. I wish more people did.

:disappointed:

Who would you say are some of the best bands to come out of your local community? I'm just curious.

obviously i love the music scene here and i am apart of it and yeah ive talked about that before

but i hate how small it is. there is only one scene here. it's the underground/indie/young bands scene, but because of how small New Zealand is, this scene includes a lot of styles of music... I have been to shows where there are Electronic, punk and hip hop groups all playing on the same bill. Ugh, it's stupid. There's no way bands can get anywhere in such a small scene like this. I hope it changes one day..;

the Sydney scene is pretty decent. we've just had a quiet year so far. i don't get to see too many of the local acts live because i live a fair way out of the city. and i guess time and other interests get in the way stop me from taking a keener interest in the scene.

I love the Brisbane music scene. There is of course a lot of crap as well, but there are always local talents about. Living inner city it's quite easy for me to go and see local bands, and it's just usually time and money get in the way.
