January 13, 200917 yr Capitol Whore Out Radiohead Catalogue with Vinyl Single Reissues There's a strong whiff of desperation associated with EMI/Capitol's instant Radiohead cash-in scheme. Of course, Thom & Co. left the major behind for the release of In Rainbows, but they can't stop Capitol from pimping out their back catalogue in every way imaginable. There was that garish, pointless CD boxed set, the Best Of disc, the plethora of LP vinyl reissues. Not to mention the Thom Yorke novelty dollar bill, the I Heart Jonny Greenwood pin, and that bumper sticker of a Radiohead bear standing on an ice flow. (Ok , technically those last three are just random 'Head memorabilia we found on eBay, but we wouldn't be surprised if Capitol started selling action-grip Phil Selway figurines very soon.) Now, the jilted label is taking advantage of insane fan loyalty with a limited edition series of 12" singles that attempt to recreate 12 of the band's original CD singles, according to At Ease. The records will come out on April 21, but you can pre-order them at Insound right now. Though there's no previously unreleased material involved in this round of vinyl reissues, 1992's rare Drill EP -- featuring early versions of "You", "Thinking About You", and "Prove Yourself"-- will be re-released. The other 11 singles to undergo the CD-to-LP treatment: Creep, My Iron Lung, Just, Fake Plastic Trees, High and Dry, Street Spirit [fade out], Paranoid Android, Karma Police, No Surprises, Pyramid Song, There There, and 2+2=5. No word yet on which/whether B-sides will be included. Major labels recycling, the yuppies networking, the panic, the vomit, etc. http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/148421-capitol-whore-out-radiohead-catalogue-with-vinyl-single-reissues
January 13, 200917 yr Hey, is there any word on Radiohead attending the Grammys? I have never really thought about it, but I have never seen them attend an award show. I usually don't care who wins the awards, but it would be nice to see a performance since they are nominated in several of the major categories.

Radiohead don't 'do' big TV events, such as Grammy's, MTV Video Music Awards, etc.
January 13, 200917 yr Yeah, my brother compares them to nirvana a lot in that respect. With the exception of the mtv music awards, Nirvana only ever did foreign talk shows, totp's (which was the funniest thing to grace mankind!), and SNL. On SNL they closed with the angriest song on the album, "Territorial Pissings" (instead of something like lithium or come as you are). My brother draws a parallel between this and the time Radiohead came on a U.S. talk show and chose to play "Electioneering".
January 13, 200917 yr Radiohead don't 'do' big TV events, such as Grammy's, MTV Video Music Awards, etc. but it would be cool
January 14, 200917 yr well, thom did let them do this, though.. Thom Yorke: Grammy Spokesman Extraordinaire As are Kanye, Coldplay, and Lil Wayne After a long, dark slumber, the Grammys may be waking up. The tiny gramophone awards have suffered a steady decline in interest (last year's broadcast was second to only 2006's all-time ratings low), but this year's surprisingly aware nominees-- Lil Wayne, M.I.A., Radiohead, Kanye, T.I.-- and an admittedly eye-catching ad campaign are poised to prevent more dismal numbers for the February 8 telecast. So maybe this year will only be the third-lowest ever. Fingers crossed. Back to those ads. When I saw Thom Yorke's face hovering above some subway stairs near Central Park last weekend, I was struck-- why would our global hero lend his likeness to something as patently lame as the Grammys? Well, there's a trade-off. Part of Grammy's "Celebrate the Music That Made Us" campaign, the ad is made up of the names of songs that have influenced Mr. Yorke over the years, including Björk's "Unravel" (web-famously covered by Radiohead), David Bowie ("Ashes to Ashes") and Liars (""The Wrong Coat for You Mt. Heart Attack"). Grammy gets to use Thom; Thom gets to promote Liars song names. An even trade! (Check out a larger version of the Thom Yorke ad here.) The same idea runs through the rest of the Grammy plugs, which feature Kanye West, Coldplay, Lil Wayne, Rihanna, Stevie Wonder, and, ugh, Lenny Kravitz. You guys were a Kravitz away from something pretty amazing! (If I had a nickel for every time I heard that one, etc.) TV ads narrated by these highly influenced artists will start running soon, too. (Via Idolator.) Check out the ads starring Coldplay, Kanye, and Lil Wayne below. (Hey look, Kanye likes "The Eraser"! Is that going to be weird now at the Grammys because Thom didn't put Kanye songs in his collage? Hmm.) http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/news/148444-thom-yorke-grammy-spokesman-extraordinaire TV ads narrated by these highly influenced artists will start running soon, too. (Via Idolator.) Has Thom done one of these, too?? hmmm... maybe they are doing Grammy's this year...
January 14, 200917 yr the Grammys this year should prove to be very very interesting... and hopefully good!
January 14, 200917 yr I predict two wins out of the following categories they're nominated in (in bold): Album Of The Year ('In Rainbows') (also nominated: Coldplay, Lil Wayne, Ne-Yo en Robert Plant & Alison Krauss) Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals ('House Of Cards') (also nominated: AC/DC, Coldplay, Eagles en Kings Of Leon) Best Rock Song ('House Of Cards') (also nominated: Bruce Springsteen, Death Cab For Cutie, Kings Of Leon en Coldplay) Best Alternative Music Album ('In Rainbows') (also nominated: Beck, Death Cab For Cutie, Gnarls Barkley en My Morning Jacket) Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package ('In Rainbows') (also nominated: Nine Inch Nails, Wu Sheng, Panic At The Disco en Aimee Mann) Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical (Nigel Godrich) (also nominated: Danger Mouse, Johnny Karkazis, Rick Rubin en will.i.am) Best Short Form Music Video ('House Of Cards') (also nominated: Erykah Badu, Gnarls Barkley, Alicia Keys & Jack White en Weezer) I highly doubt they will win Best Album, nor that 'House Of Cards' will bag any of these awards. It's just a weak pick out of all the songs on In Rainbows. But ok, 'House Of Cards' was a radio single which got a fair amount of airplay. I hope Nigel will win Producer Of The Year, but I don't know. Danger Mouse could bag that one.
January 15, 200917 yr The SHOULD win best alternative album. It is heads and shoulders above the other nominees.

January 15, 200917 yr Guy Hands is a whore. http://www.ateaseweb.com/2009/01/14/capitol-to-release-expanded-radiohead-albums/
January 15, 200917 yr Last night I was watching an interview on the Hour with Billy Corgan (who is from the Smashing Pumpkins for you who know nothing about music). For part of it he was talking about how horrible some of the things that record labels try to do to artists are. Now I couldn't hear half of what he was saying since four letter words are censored by CBC apparently. But I'm guessing that he was pretty fired up about it. He talked about some talented artists that we just have never heard of because of the way the label industry has destroyed them. So do I believe this? Yes. Case Study #1. Radiohead. Formerly on the EMI label. Lets go back over a year. Radiohead release their album In Rainbows themselves through their website in a pay-what-you-want format. They also are selling a boxset with a bunch of goodies including artwork and vinyl. EMI decides to release a boxset featuring all their studio albums they put out on their label. And it was released the same time as Radiohead's boxset. EMI bitter? Cashing in on an artist they lost? Perhaps. The band talk about how they don't really like what EMI is doing with their music, but there isn't much they can do since their former label owns it. Thom made a comment about if they wanted to make even more money they would release them on vinyl. Fast forward a few months. Radiohead are going on tour for thier In Rainbows Tour. EMI decides to release a Best Of Radiohead CD/DVD/VINYL to coincide with the start of the tour. More greed? Perhaps. Fast forward to August: EMI must have heard Thom's suggestion for making money as the label reissues their records on Vinyl. Fast forward to January: EMI plans to release all of Radiohead's singles (including their Drill EP) on Vinyl. Okay we get the point. They're greedy. They've milked Radiohead as much as they can right? A few days later: EMI will be releasing Radiohead's first three albums in extended format. So some bonus songs DVDs etc thrown in. Okay, so you get my point? Radiohead may be off their label, but they're milking this for all its worth, and its disgusting. Its unfortunate how much of a business the music industry can be sometimes. No wonder Ryan Adams announced today that he is done with music. And its no wonder that some bands go under so quickly when they are being forced by record labels to do such and such. Look at Coldplay for example. X&Y was a huge sucess, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that they were being constricted by the label. The whole thing reminds me of farming. Sure you can load the farmland with fertilizers and the crop will grow huge that year. But soon the soil will be so depleted of nutrients the plants will be useless. So my point: greed is a powerful thing and it is destroying music. It would be better just to give bands more control to make the music that THEY want and in turn what their actual fans will want to listen to
January 15, 200917 yr OMG... I can't believe how they are doing this! They are putting a little extra stuff on each to get people to buy. Most of us have this stuff already and I will not be buying any of this! If you don't ... you can find in Multimedia on atease or just request, someone will help you or go to warez-bb.org .. they have alot of videos of concerts and BBC stuff and other. I will not support EMI. Too bad RH can't buy back their catalogue from EMI. I know someone who did this and rereleased their original albums under their own label with an additional link to exclusive 12 tracks which was really cool. I can't wait til CP is done with them. Greedy corporate pigs.
January 15, 200917 yr this is greedy for EMI to do, the unfortunate thing is that people (probably including myself) will buy it because it includes rare stuff (all the bbc performances, etc)
January 15, 200917 yr I agree on everything you say., Briggs. All they care about is making profit.... I just recently read an Interview with Damon Albarn in the WORD magazine and he was talking about how EMI had changed into something very very different from what it had been once. This is what he said: For me, EMI doesn't exist any more. they should rename it. It isn't the company it was - not in any way. It was bought by venture capitalists. They got a guy in who previously sold bleach. I'm not prejudiced against people who sell bleach but I've never felt that the people who took over EMI gave a shit about music of the musicians on the label. EMI was on interesting mix of art and commerce - a really amazing one, actually - but they're not any more. Not one single person from the company that bought EMI has ever come to see or talk to me. It's really really sad.. :/ making money with other people's art. that's really fucked up. The capitalist system really is..
January 15, 200917 yr Hello capitalism. :( I do want those b-sides and rarities on an original cd or two, but ... ya know.
January 16, 200917 yr I almost forgot how beautiful videotape is I was disappointed with how it turned out in In Rainbows :( :( :( But not as disappointed as I was with NUDE/BIG IDEAS. '98 live version was possibly my ultimate favourite Radiohead song and I was going nuts over the fact that it was going to be part of In Rainbows except it was.. such a let down.. no glockenspiel.. unnecessary outro.. i could go on forever .. oh well.
