coldplay vs radiohead

Featured Replies

I've never been a Radiohead fan. I've tried but I just cannot get into them. I like my music poppy. The only song of theirs that I've sort of enjoyed is Creep.

So my vote goes to Coldplay.

It's ok Annie..No one should be forced to like a band they don't...

Although Radiohead is a pretty damn good band...:P

Why is Coldplay constantly compared to Radiohead?!

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I just don't get it!

I mean I like Radiohead, but other than some early Coldplay stuff, I don't get the comparison overall, especially since it continues today. It can't be the voices, since Thom Yorke sounds nothing like Chris. Their music isn't really that similar since Radiohead are a little more kooky and whiney in their musical arrangements and vocals, while Coldplay are usually more melodic and straightforward other than a few experimental tracks over the years. In addition, Radiohead's lyrics tend to be all over the place, while Coldplay tend to concentrate on love, modern life, the future, etc.

The early Coldplay stuff (which appears to be the only stuff I would even remotely compare to Radiohead) appears to have built upon Radioheads 'sound' and made it their own and more mainstream.

I hate reading these reviews that say Coldplay are a Radiohead 'rip-off'. If that was the case, they would sound the same wouldn't they? And even if they did borrow some, they obviously tweaked the sound enough to make it more mainstream since Coldplay are much more mainstream than Radiohead. Basically, don't all bands sound like some other band at some point?

You have to understand that most of the people who make this comparison are ignorant to the bands. If you look at them from a non-fan perspective, they do seem kinda similar.

1. They both do mostly soft rock with focus on melodies and lyrics and song structure, and both bands rarely use power chords/rock riffs.

2. Both singers go back and forth between high tenor, and falsetto. That's probably one of the biggest similarities, not too many popular bands have singers that use falsetto like they do, and Chris and Thom use it in very similar ways. To someone who doesn't really know the music, they sound a lot alike.

3. They're both British bands.

4. Thom and Chris look sort of similar. They both have the same short hair beard anyway, when I first saw Thom I thought Chris kinda copied his look after him a bit.

5. Some of the more popular Radiohead songs like Fake Plastic Trees, High And Dry, House of Cards, and Karma Police, do sound similar to a lot of Coldplay's popular songs like The Scientist, Yellow, and Speed of Sound. Now don't bite my head off and say they sound nothing alike; imagine you are hearing those songs for the first time ever and not really paying too much attention, there are some similar sounds.

And for those who do know the bands a little more in depth, some Viva La Vida songs do sound more experimental and similar to some of Radiohead's experimental work (Chinese Sleep Chant, Cemeteries of London, 42).

I hear ya. I don't get the comparisons, either. To me, nobody sounds like Radiohead. They are in a class all by themselves. :smug:

I dont get it either. I love both bands but in a different way.... Still they are both brilliant :D:D:D:D

Hey, thanks for the replies. Yeah, I figured this has probably been discussed before, but it just kind of made me wonder when I was listening to Radiohead today. To me they sound more like some of Smashing Pumpkins or Nirvana than Coldplay, since they are more moody.

I think they are kind of their own though, but now you mention it, High and Dry does kind of sound Coldplay-ish and I get the vocal comparison a bit now :)

Oh well. I just thought it was weird they are STILL compared to them, even though their sound today doesn't sound like Radiohead really at all I don't think...

Like I said, to a very casual listener, songs like Cemeteries of London and 42 really fit the Radiohead style experimental darker music.

Everybody please just completely ignore my sense-making responses.
