coldplay vs radiohead

You have to understand that most of the people who make this comparison are ignorant to the bands. If you look at them from a non-fan perspective, they do seem kinda similar.

1. They both do mostly soft rock with focus on melodies and lyrics and song structure, and both bands rarely use power chords/rock riffs.

2. Both singers go back and forth between high tenor, and falsetto. That's probably one of the biggest similarities, not too many popular bands have singers that use falsetto like they do, and Chris and Thom use it in very similar ways. To someone who doesn't really know the music, they sound a lot alike.

3. They're both British bands.

4. Thom and Chris look sort of similar. They both have the same short hair beard anyway, when I first saw Thom I thought Chris kinda copied his look after him a bit.

5. Some of the more popular Radiohead songs like Fake Plastic Trees, High And Dry, House of Cards, and Karma Police, do sound similar to a lot of Coldplay's popular songs like The Scientist, Yellow, and Speed of Sound. Now don't bite my head off and say they sound nothing alike; imagine you are hearing those songs for the first time ever and not really paying too much attention, there are some similar sounds.

And for those who do know the bands a little more in depth, some Viva La Vida songs do sound more experimental and similar to some of Radiohead's experimental work (Chinese Sleep Chant, Cemeteries of London, 42).

i paid attention to it :smug:

And yet you still say you don't understand. Well I explained it to you, so how do you people not understand?

well no i just said before that i didn't personally understand it.

like when i see it, in my own eyes, i dont understand why people would do that.

even though i understand where your coming from,

i still dont think people should mistake them in my personal opinnion.

:smug2: thats all

don't worry, fitz, we understand. that makes a lot of sense actually.

I kinda kept getting really annoyed at this comparison until I actually started listening to radiohead, and I find that coldplay has a lot more feel-good music, or music that speaks directly to the soul and just kinda takes control of you and your emotions (fix you, life in tecnicolor, everything's not lost).

it is annoying when reviewers say that coldplay rips off radiohead. though, read the rolling stone article on chris, and the interview with him. its called the master of uncool or something like that, and chris says that the biggest coldplay influence is radiohead, and he said that coldplay is the very best at plagarizing. something along those lines. but he's right, no one should be ashamed of taking inspiration from other bands. I plan on trying to be like coldplay in a band someday!

Yeah well people need to stop assuming everyone in the world knows every single Coldplay song. And people who make that comparison aren't doing it to annoy you, it's just what they think.

And don't think twice about any shit you read in Rolling Stone. That magazine is so far up its own ass it's not even funny.

well duhh :P

im not trying to think that, becuase i know my friends dont.

i just dont understand why they feel the need to compare them to radio head out of everyone

its not anything personal :stunned:

ok still dont know how to delete messages. newer message underneath....

Well I gave 5 good and (seemingly) obvious reasons as to why Radiohead seems a lot like Coldplay to a casual listener, so I really don't get how you still are confused.

ok ok. that was just my take on it... :inquisitive: I still agree with you... most people don't know their shit well enough to compare coldplay to radiohead. That's just it. you should trust your own opinion, or one of someone who has heard a LOT of coldplay and a LOT of radiohead. or whatever, there's no rules. never mind. just everyone has their own opinion.

and for the record, that was pretty much just an interview, word for word. so mr.man78, that's my answer, and I suggest just taking a peek at that interview if youre curious, I know I was. but don't trust the article parts, cause again, those are just opinions. and a lot of the RS writers don't know what theyre talking about. yeah so coldplay is kinda like radiohead, sometimes, but they are their own band, and in my opinion, make a lot better music.

Thanks for your statements, I did read them and it definately helped.

Overall, it's just weird I guess, almost hostile, the way many people/magazines mention the comparison is all. There are plenty of other bands, but they tend to pick on Coldplay - even before they became really big.

 thats what i meant.

The only Coldplay songs that are really Radiohead-esque are Such a Rush and maybe some other pre-Parachutes songs. They are just compared to Radiohead because both of them have singers that sing high, and both of them are British.

I don't agree with the U2 comparisons either but in all honesty they are fairer, imo.

edit: Also, Nick's list was the shizyfunk.

Coldplay vs. Radiohead

So I have this friend who is a die hard radiohead fan, and I am obviously a die hard Coldplay fan. So he told me he heard Coldplay is basically a copy of radiohead. I'm not very familiar with radiohead, but I don't think the two bands sound alike AT ALL. Can you give me your opionions, so the next time my friend and I get in a radiohead vs. Coldplay argument, I can have the upperhand :sneaky:

Firstly, I don't like to compare bands because every band has a own DNA. Of course there are always some influences and in this case it is clear that Radiohead had a slightly influence in Coldplay, however there are other bands which had a bigger influence on them.

Fur sure its not a copy, the sound of the two bands is to different, Radiohead is more rock-y I think. But I have to admit that Coldplay develop the same tendency: They also try to envolve their music and to break out the ordinary rules and borders of music.

Radiohead is definitely one of the best bands in the world - musically, and its not a problem at all that Coldplay see a inspiration in them but its not a copy!

Maybe in their earlier albums but I think Coldplay sound more similar to Roxy Music now than to Radiohead.

I think it would easy to compare Coldplay to Radiohead in their earlier albums--namely Parachutes--but that doesn't mean that Coldplay 'copied' Radiohead's sound. Radiohead was one of many bands that Coldplay drew inspiration from early in their career; they, along with U2, were one of the bands that Coldplay was heavily influenced by, so I think that people naturally draw conclusions that Coldplay just copied the sounds of both bands.

This isn't necessarily true. Even while drawing from their musical roots, Coldplay put their own signature on their work that allowed them to stand out from Radiohead, U2, and others. Especially now this is evident with Viva and the new LP5 era songs. In light of these two albums, it would be hard to argue that Coldplay are 'copying' Radiohead.

Listen to Viva la Vida, then listen to In Rainbows. The bare bones are unsurprisingly similar, but each band has its own identity stamped into those albums--that's what makes each band unique.

. . . This thread is just asking for it :P

I think Coldplay is more a copy of Jay Z personally.

I'm a fan of both bands, but Coldplay are by far my favourite. I think it's a silly comparison made by people that have only heard snippets of Parachutes, or maybe haven't heard Coldplay's music at all. For me, Muse sound more like Radiohead (aswell as Queen in certian songs) but this never gets mentioned.

Yay finally a thread that compares Coldplay to Radiohead!

^NO, this is not a reason to celebrate!

I hate threads like these, like in the above posts, every band has its own personality, and there was already threads like this comparing U2 and Coldplay. They all went down in flames.

This thread should be locked to prevent future violence :lock:

they're both their own bands, but coldplay is obviously influenced by radiohead, but they both have unique styles.

doesn't mean one's necessarily better than the other, as it's all based on personal taste.

nao lock pls :lock:

I should have added an extra dose of sarcasm.

Oh, joy, ANOTHER Coldplay vs. Radiohead thread. You'd think we'd have enough of these by now. :|
