That's their naming mechanism for the iPhone. Weird, I know. But that's what they did.

 

The 3G was when they brought in the 3G service, so they wanted to highlight that in the product name. Not like denoting that it's the third iPhone. Because obviously that's wrong.

Yep, that's true. They don't want the phone market to be dominated by two giants companies. They actually did this to protect the consumer and to help keep the prices somewhat reasonable.
