Is This the Most Hate?

The reactions so far have generally been a fair bit worse than what I can remember from the weeks / months leading up to the release of Viva. Bear in mind though that most of the criticism is being aimed at ETIAW and Paradise - Charlie Brown, Hurts Like Heaven, Princess of China and UATW are generally liked, while Major Minus and Moving to Mars are somewhere in between. The main criticism this time around seems to be the lack of depth and emotion in the lyrics, along with the lackluster synth-pop style that a lot of people are disappointed with (mostly aimed at the two singles).

The reason why there wasn't this much of a backlash when Violet Hill and Viva La Vida (song) were released was because there was simply more depth to those songs than either of the two current singles from the MX era. Violet Hill's lyrics actually had something to say, and Viva La Vida was catchy as hell with a decent narrative. Unfortunately it seems that with both ETIAW and particularly Paradise, Coldplay are consciously trying to recreate Viva La Vida-type anthems for this new era, but both come across as songs with neither the substance nor the creativity of the former. For some, this also puts into question the motives of the band, and why they have chosen this approach to songwriting.

There's always going to be some criticism surrounding the unveiling of each release, and unfortunately for many of us here, the quality of the MX-era singles so far haven't really measured up to the hype, or the quality of previous releases as of yet.

Well, I don't think anyone could be any more precise, concise, sober and solid than that.

You put all the facts together and, bingo. This is it.

I don't think the reactions to Paradise are as bad, but the reactions to all of the "bad" news combined is pissing people off. ETIAW + Paradise + Rihanna + Mylo Xyloto meaning nothing, I'm sure people are taking it all out on Paradise. Not that they like it, but maybe all this bad stuff at once isn't helping.

I for one don't see any problem with Paradise. I tooooootally get the ETIAW hate, but I seriously can't undedrstand why Paradise is getting hate. It's exactly what I'd expect them to be doing...

You're right, it's true!

I am yet to come across someone on here that doesn't love MTM!

Because the band shouldn't be relying on 'shallow' music to advertise their album in the first place. We know they are capable of quality and this is exactly what we should expect from them, especially since a lot of us here have literally invested in this band and enabled their continuing existence by buying their music and going to see their shows.

If you expect them to show their gratitude by making music only you like then I think you will have a long wait!:shocked2:

We're brutally honest.

Debs, I want you and the boys to know that Paradise makes me feel like you're trying to tell us that we can't handle lyrical depth. It's kind of insulting and it makes me not want to purchase the album. Have you no shame? There are better ways to please everyone; Coldplay will release whatever they want and the sheep fanboys and fangirls will eat it up. Why not kill two birds with one stone and give us some better lyrics?

That isn't fair!!! They can't keep writing and producing the same kind of songs for their own sanity!! If you dont like it don't listen to the album and don't come back on here!

I think you might want to read the article on Coldplaying about the mixed reactions to MX/Paradise. That just about says it all. I don´t think I have ever seen this forum most split. MX has turned into a hot potato indeed :)

How I wish "Paradise" was divisive in nature like Radiohead's "Everything in Its Right Place" :(

I do have my fingers crossed for the new songs though especially "Us Against the World." Coldplay has proven time and time again that they can handle the quiet, stripped down songs very well.

Can´t we all celebrate that in MX they are gonna give something to everyone? Big sumptuous songs, together with acoustic intimate ones. It might turn out to be everyone´s favorite album, simply because it packs in it everything Coldplay has been and is now

I'm interested in the way it'll develop in the future.

Two years ago I certainly wouldn't have thought that I'd be in a very sceptical mood for the new album.

I can't compare it to previous releases because I wasn't here on the board then but I think the amount of people being disappointed (almost everyone I got to know personally at concerts is as sceptical and afraid of what's to come as I am) is exceptional.

I guess we haven't talked then. :P

Sue: I really hope this changes because the hardcore fans are usually the ones in front row, so it would be kinda sad to see no hands in the air when Paradise or Every Tear are being played in the proper MX tour hehe I might make a run for front row this time too, but I kinda like the idea of hanging a few rows behind..we´ll see :)

Are you and the people you met disappointed about all MX material or just Every Tear and/or Paradise? I think this album will offer a bit for everyone.

Two years ago this week was Wembley  And I agree, the absolute sheer joy, exhilaration, emotion I felt at those two gigs, I never ever thought I'd be at this point two years later. :\

It's upsetting. Which is has played a massive part in all the negativity, it all comes from people who love this band and who are hurt, upset and scared. I've been here for almost 9 years and we've never ever had anything like the reactions we've had for ETIAW and Paradise before. It's certainly been an interesting few days.

Just this. I can't believe in 2 years since Wembley all this has come to pass. I just feel absolutely heartbroken.

Same question to you:

I am really interested in understanding where the disappointment lies as I did not see a wildly negative reaction when CB or HLH were first played for instance

I like Charlie Brown, I like UATW, I like HLH, but I don't if that was more relief they didn't sound like ETIAW and after hearing Paradise and ETIAW I worry deeply for the recorded versions. I don't like the studio version of MM at all, PoC will have Rihanna on it (which I won't judge until I've heard but I'm not thrilled about the idea). None of them have really struck any sort of emotional chord with me though.

Of course they might prove me wrong, but they're not giving me an awful lot to put my faith into at this point. I guess we'll see in 6 weeks, but I think it's fair to say I'm pretty terrified.

so are you saying they can't write good or deep songs anymore? I know some of their best songs have terrible lyrics but still. Do you really think they're that bad.

So at least you like some of the songs. Maybe within the overall context of the album, the songs will have more meaning to you once heard in the proper order. Emotional chords are something so personal it would be useless to argue about, but I do feel both ET and Paradise deal with very dark themes and hope in dire times (albeit the darkness is well hidden but the depth is there :)

I am one of the front row girls, yes.

I can't even remember how many banners I made... last one was "Good to see you again" with Charlie Brown drawing on it haha.

(No, I never made any offensive banners. :laugh4:)

At the moment I couldn't even justify spending big amounts of money to see them in concert to myself. It's gotten this bad.

Just last weekend Imke and me had our "anniversary" of meeting Chris and Guy rather by accident in front of the Bakery.

It's nice thinking back of all the awesome memories I have because of CP.

Soon it'll be one year since the boat trip (and the fun night at Dublin Castle the day after)! :cheesy:

Here's a little summary of why I don't like 4 out of the 4 properly released songs so far:

-
ETIAW:
disaster, there is a reason why Ritmo de la Noche hasn't been played on the radio since the 90's. Recycling other songs in the first one you hear after they went into retreat was a big disappointment but the Rock am Ring stream gave hope.

-
Major Minus:
The live version was great to listen to. Then there was the studio version. Muffled vocals, too silent in comparison to the instrumentation and on top of that the distortion of the vocals. Second miss for me. It could've been better.

-
Moving to Mars:
Nothing in this song fits together for me. There seem to be 3 separate parts... The high "Maaaaars" bit ruined the bit of emotion that the rest managed to evoke in me. There are simply too many ideas put into one single song when they could've made 3 out of it.

-
Paradise:
There has been said enough about it since yesterday I think. It lacks emotion, I can't relate to it in any way. The youtube piano cover clearly shows that the song has potential that hasn't been used. It just screams "we want this to be a hit" so they put too many ingredients into it. What bothers me most is that this song probably was born on a simple piano melody but then was modified into this pop-synth crap with the children-choir-like "Para- Para- Paradise" bit that was only worsened by the high "uuuuh"s at the end.

Wow, didn't think I'd write this much hehe

Wembley week was awesome!!

All the stress was worth it and bad times or lack of sleep are forgotten, we had a great time being emotional and then one minute later jumping and singing our lungs out hehe

We were a great group I think.

I agree with everything you said.

Just this. I can't believe in 2 years since Wembley all this has come to pass. I just feel absolutely heartbroken.
Yes, it's not just the music, right?

We had awesome experiences together and now it seems like it won't ever be the same again because it was the music that brought us together originally.

Mhmm, don't know how to express myself right now, I hope you know what I mean? :uhoh: :embarrassed:

Oooh, just remembered I need to update this graph I made when ETIAW was released!

Sue: Surely you are not going to give up seeing them live because of those 4 songs? :) After all seeing them live is the chance we all get to hear most of their great catalogue. I hope you won´t miss out on this. :) We could all go to the concerts and just accept that there is going to be songs for everyone and every taste. After all, the very synths you called crap actually are very emotional to me, so we are all different but Coldplay catalogue, especially live, will always be so varied to be able to cater to both sides. Or at least that is my hope for all long-time fans

I also like Charlie Brown and UATW and HLH... but like you I'm worried about the studio version after hearing what they did to MM.

POC already sounded very hip hop (but certainly not bad!) and I'm curious what the song will be like.

I was sceptical when I heard Maroon 5 made a song with Christina Aguilera but in the end I love the song and her part isn't that prominent in the song. :P

All in all I'm terrified like you hehe

Yes, we'll know more in 6 weeks!

I hope you're right. :nice:

It's nice to see that normal discussions are possible here btw. :)

Yes I have a feeling if we all were in the same room physically there would probably be much more respect shown...sometimes posting on the internet, you forget that the words you write actually can hurt the person reading them. You just don´t see their faces, so you don´t realize how hurtful it can get. As we are all fans (or at least have been) my hope is that we will all be able to share some enthusiasm for MX, more or less, so we can go back to what we do best: scream our joy for Coldplay music :)
