I'm a newer coldplayer... i joined june this year.

was there this much negative reactions to the begginings of the other album(s)?

or is this seriously the worst reception amongst coldplay fans for a new album ever?

if someone could sincerly fill me in on what i could be missing from past releases, i would love to know.

thanks

The reactions so far have generally been a fair bit worse than what I can remember from the weeks / months leading up to the release of Viva. Bear in mind though that most of the criticism is being aimed at ETIAW and Paradise - Charlie Brown, Hurts Like Heaven, Princess of China and UATW are generally liked, while Major Minus and Moving to Mars are somewhere in between. The main criticism this time around seems to be the lack of depth and emotion in the lyrics, along with the lackluster synth-pop style that a lot of people are disappointed with (mostly aimed at the two singles).

The reason why there wasn't this much of a backlash when Violet Hill and Viva La Vida (song) were released was because there was simply more depth to those songs than either of the two current singles from the MX era. Violet Hill's lyrics actually had something to say, and Viva La Vida was catchy as hell with a decent narrative. Unfortunately it seems that with both ETIAW and particularly Paradise, Coldplay are consciously trying to recreate Viva La Vida-type anthems for this new era, but both come across as songs with neither the substance nor the creativity of the former. For some, this also puts into question the motives of the band, and why they have chosen this approach to songwriting.

There's always going to be some criticism surrounding the unveiling of each release, and unfortunately for many of us here, the quality of the MX-era singles so far haven't really measured up to the hype, or the quality of previous releases as of yet.

I can understand why everyone hates the "shallow" singles, but how come everyone is ditching the whole album becuase of simple singles. You can't understand a book by reading only a page.
Because the band shouldn't be relying on 'shallow' music to advertise their album in the first place. We know they are capable of quality and this is exactly what we should expect from them, especially since a lot of us here have literally invested in this band and enabled their continuing existence by buying their music and going to see their shows.

I wish she would. What did Debs say last time?

I think it ruined her weekend.

Afaik she has absolutely no input on musical matters, and I can take a pretty good guess the band will continue on their musical odyssey whatever people think - fans or critic alike - so what's the point of that kind of sentiment?

I don't think the reactions to Paradise are as bad, but the reactions to all of the "bad" news combined is pissing people off. ETIAW + Paradise + Rihanna + Mylo Xyloto meaning nothing, I'm sure people are taking it all out on Paradise. Not that they like it, but maybe all this bad stuff at once isn't helping.

I for one don't see any problem with Paradise. I tooooootally get the ETIAW hate, but I seriously can't undedrstand why Paradise is getting hate. It's exactly what I'd expect them to be doing...

We're brutally honest.

Debs, I want you and the boys to know that Paradise makes me feel like you're trying to tell us that we can't handle lyrical depth. It's kind of insulting and it makes me not want to purchase the album. Have you no shame? There are better ways to please everyone; Coldplay will release whatever they want and the sheep fanboys and fangirls will eat it up. Why not kill two birds with one stone and give us some better lyrics?

and that just made me sad. :(

I know, I was sad too, when I saw her comment. I felt like when someone asks if their outfit looks good, and you wanna say the truth that it doesn't look good, but without hurting their feelings. And then you end up saying the truth, and they feel sad and you feel like crap.

I still feel bad :\ ...

Oh, there's always been divided opinion when something was new, at least from X&Y on. People fought. People came and left. There have always been immature fans who took things too seriously and people who liked to wind those fans up.

I haven't bothered to check much of it (why bother? it can't be good for you psychologically), but from what I've seen, the level of vitrol is new. But it's exactly like that across the entire internet now. I can't think of a single board for anything I used to be on 10 years ago that hasn't had a serious downgrade in civility within the last 3 years. I guess it's just a new generation of kids with a new set of expectations.

A deep breath and a grain of salt go a long way.

I've edited out (some of) your (brutally nonsensical) nonsense for you.

There's a third way. You have eyes - open them. Coldplay release a heavily story-teasing single from the album which pleases the masses (including many fans), and then once the album drops it all fits into place for the hardcore as well, many of whom then turn around and say 'what a brilliant idea it was not to spoil the album concept earlier on'.

There's a fourth way too. Interested?
