Am I the only one who found that whole 'teenager texting each other with those texts popping up on the screen" part completely cringe-worthy?

Thinking about it now, that whole set with the teenagers was kind of awkward...though I vaguely recall seeing a clip of "The Cosby Show" on the House...one of my fave shows of all-time

Was overall allright...I loved the part with the independent athletes, Mr. Bean and Ali though...Ali>>Legend

Yeah I think a lot found that baffling and something only the British youth couod understand. And after all it was all aimed at the British youth.

And I found it hilarious that some American commentators thought Kenneth Branagh was acting as Abraham Lincoln and not Isambard Kingdom Brunel! That industrial revolution scene was stunning.

It was awesome. Great seeing an opening ceremony directed by someone with the wit and creativity of a real director like Danny Boyle and not some Hollywood bore like most that went before.

I thought they played in Hyde Park.

I didn't watch the whole thing so I have no idea where they performed.

They played inside the stadium during the opening ceremony. They played I bet you look good on the dance floor and then covered Come together by The Beatles. Great cover.

Over here they (obviously) were showing the U.S team a lot, and every time they went to them like 1/3 of them were on their phones filming:\

I mean other countries had maybe one person with a phone or camera but it's like our team couldn't even enjoy the moment. It was being filmed for TV anyway. Maybe other countries did this too, but they just didn't show it on U.S TV?

I hope Fabian Cancellara gets all well on Wednesday, everybody knows how hard he worked for today and then fall like that

His hand didn't look all well when he crossed the line :uhoh: and then whilst he was crying on his coach shoulder he pointed a bit to his own shoulder.

Let his please be ok and win the time trial again

I don't see how that part with the teens was distinctly British...it seems as if it was just as likely to be American as British. But...I don't know...all in all it was an AMAZING opening ceremony! (though I would have liked to hear some Keane...

Yeah you're right. It was the weakest part of the ceremony. But just watched the first half hour of the ceremony again (Industrial Revolution and the construction of chimneys, Kenneth Branagh as Brunel) and it sends shivers down my spine. It was incredible how they transformed a bright English countryside set into a dirty, dark monster within minutes! I think too few people know of the importance the industrial revolution served for Britain and the world so it was great seeing that last night. The moment the rings converged to form the Olympic rings was unbelievable. It wasn't going to compete with Beijing and I'm glad it didn't (no country can compete with that). It was certainly unique and original.

And yeah - didn't hear any Keane which was a surprise! No Radiohead, Oasis or Coldplay either! Not even when the athletes were walking out (which was as ever in these opening ceremonies was a bit of a drag).

Gutted for Cavendish. He seemed really disappointed. Nasty turn of events for Cancellara as well. And the worst thing was that a drugs cheat from a few years back won it. Interesting race but not a good result at all.

Many countries did this as well. Many French athletes also brought their camera, phones and were filming, but you could see the huge smile on their face & they looked very enthusiastic.

In France they of course showed the French team quite a lot, and several times when their "parade" was over, we could see Tony Parker signing autographs & taking pics with foreign athletes :laugh3:

Yes, the part with the rings! I think I started jumping up and down at that bit. It was incredible!

I know, I was definitely expecting to hear some of those bands.

The begining of the ceremony with the industrial revolution was really nice, but after that it didn't impressed me at all, of course there were some really nice momments (Mr. Bean was hilarious) but overall Beijing's opening was better and much more emotional, there was just something missing, it could have been much better. The part that was meant to be fun with the greatest british music artists was lame because of a ridiculous unnecessary teenage backstory. I did like the choice of putting young athletes to light up the Olympic Cauldron though.

Apart from six hours at work, I spent the whole day watching either on the couch or computer.

Observations:

I wish their was less music at events in general, but the 'somebody that I used to know' xylophone riff between rounds in shooting is amazingly apropos.

Badminton is still awesome. The US still sucks at it (even with Indonesian expatriots).

Fuck yeah Ariel Hsing (table tennis) and the lovable rednecks of the us archery team.

I am developing a slightly racist dislike of Italian fencers who shout too much.

Tsup with Phelps? (and the US women's basketball team for that matter)

I really should research the rules of Judo.
